So many my recordings destroyed by wind. Tried everything except this. Couldnt even find a highly rated product on Amazon. If this works it will be a miracle. Heading straight to dollar tree right now.

Have you tried this with an iPhone 14? They have three microphones one on the bottom,one on the top of the screen and one on the back near the cameras. I’ve been wanting to record the progress of the buildings in my city being torn down and remodeled. The winds been the major problem and I’m not tech smart to figure out how to record audio tracks over it and lol them together.

Awesome, the only other solution I saw were mic fur covers coming all the way from China! Funny how there isn't something we can get fast, thanks for coming to the rescue :P
Nice tip. Also try something fluffy. Think of the phone as a microphone 🎤 . Cheaper mics come with those foam cover. Better ones comes with the fluffy covers. Without any cover it doesn’t sound so good.
Thanks for this tip. I used seating foam (basically the same stuff), 1 cm thickness allready did the job perfect. I think a foam paint roller will work also.
@@LonelyWolfOutdoors ah mate, long story, Reader's Digest version. Sadly my dodgy $190 K-Mart camera didn't like it, made my voice sound like I was talking through cotton wool. I have now resorted to making my videos inside my implement shed to avoid wind, all my videos are done with my horse, wife won't let me film inside, cheers cobber (and that was the short version!)

If this doesn't work for you you could always buy on either eBay or Amazon they have a depending on your phone like a USB C microphone that just plugs into the bottom of your phone and then a lot of those you can get with dead cat wind guards on them which are really good and so that'd be another option good luck 👍🏻

@@JohnDaniels I’m just returning back to this after all this time. Thanks greatly for that link. I have 3 mic locations and one by one put my finger over each and spoke while shooting video. There was no effect while blocking the speaker on the bottom of my phone and also on the front at the top near the front facing selfie camera lens. The only one where the sound was completely blocked was on the back of the phone right next to the 3 lenses that are used for normal video recording. The huge problem is that it is extremely close to the lens and a piece of foam would show in the video. I shoot a lot of wildlife in breezy areas and would so greatly wish for a solution to lowering wind noise on my iPhone 11 Pro but thanks for your efforts here. 🤟🏼
@@Jimmy_Cavallo Hey James 😀. Good testing! A purchased a new pixel xl4 and it also records from to my locations the top and bottom. And like you had a hard time stopping the noise on one of the mics. What I ended up doing is getting a app called open camera and then setting the audio to mono and then that all I recorded from the bottom speaker which was an easy place to put the wind guard. Sounds like you're going to need to get some kind of external mic. Good luck and let me know what you figure out 👍🏻
@@JohnDaniels I do have something figured out. All that you need to do is prevent the wind from blowing past the mic. I have a case on my phone so I am going to take it off and lay a small piece of paper like a napkin or something over the mic and hold it in place by putting it under the case. I’ll lay it on over the mic without blocking the lens and I’ll snap the case back on. I’m eying it up right now and I think it will work.
The recording port on any phone would be where your mouth is when talking on the phone. That is the bottom... opposite of what you showed. That was the headphone port (for listening). Try outdoor test and record something with foam over each location to see which is best /proper location. Still good tip... Just need to update location to mount on phones.
The recording part on some phones could be with a mouthpieces but like you said it varies differently on different phones and the best way to do it is like you said record and then just talk around different ports on the phone just like in the video I showed you can look it up on the internet too and it will show you where your mic is the mic on my pixel 4 is at the very top of the phone it's a real small little hole but like you said on different phones it could be in different places
@@bronto150 search for a picture of the lenses on an iPhone 11. The mic is the tiny dot really close to them. Actually it is closest to the wide angle lens. The lens closest to the edge of the phone is the 2x lens and the farthest one is the standard 1x lens. I am going to take my case off and try putting a piece of thin paper like a paper towel or something over the mic to attempt to block the wind from hitting it and then snap the case back on the hold the paper in place. But the distance is real close.
That is a great question, I've never tried it but it sounds like it would work. You just have to figure out a way to attach them over the Mic speaker hole

Looks like an amazing idea! Can someone post a video using this method? I purchased a Saramonic Mini Di mic for my iPhone for use at an airshow. Blew the mic out during the take-off of an F-16, and I had no sound for the rest of the demo! The iPhone doesn’t blow out, but it does capture a tremendous amount of wind noise!
If you look on this channel there's a video of the BMW Dallas Marathon and I ran the whole Marathon using my phone and that hair roller and it was pretty windy so that'll give you a good idea of what it's capable of 👍🏻

@@camroot6086 that's a great idea, if I had a big case I would probably do something like that too that way you wouldn't have to take the foam on and off and actually now that I remember I seen a patent I forget which company had put out but it was for a case that had a foam filter in it and it was a big name brand phone company I can't remember for a Samsung or iPhone but let me know how it turns out if you do it
@@camroot6086 Yeah, no.. the memory foam on top works fine, but not under the case. It is getting compressed to much and is not canceling the noise anymore.. (I first tried that before putting it just on top)
That's the only thing that I had found at work. I know some people it didn't work so they changed the charging cable and it worked for them and then some people had to change the charging cable and then it also had to change the charger and then they got it to work.
That's a good question, make sure that the roller is in the right location. You can tell the where the mic is by recording a video and then just blowing around different parts of the phone where you think it might be and when you play back to video and you hear that loud noise you'll know where the mic is and that way you can position the roller in the correct spot. The only other option I can think of is to buy an external mic. They have some like a USB C that you can plug into the bottom of your phone and then with the external mic you could buy a dead cat wind protector I think they call it this is big fluffy piece of material that goes over the mic and then you could try that. Let me know how it works out.

And sometimes it's hard to get the microphone at the top with the little hole from getting wind noise even with the roller. So what you may have to do is look in the video recording app and see if there's a way to record in mono where your recording just from the bottom microphone which is easier to keep the wind noise out of
Make sure there's not two microphones some of the phones have a mic on the top and they'll have a mic on the bottom so if you put the wind blocker on the top one then you'll still get to wind. from the bottom or vice versa. I ran the Dallas Marathon using this technique and I had to use a program called open camera and then within that program I had to record mono which only recorded audio from the bottom speaker and that's where I put the wind blocker on and the video sounds great but it was really windy that day so it really does work 👍🏻
Yeah that makes it a lot harder, you can look and see if there's an option to only record on certain mics. On my new Google phone it has microphones on the top and bottom and I tried to stop the wind on the top one and could not get it to work so I use this photo app called open camera and inside there they had an option for mono recording which only recorded from the bottom line and so I put the hair roller on the bottom of the phone and it works perfect. But you're right if it has multiple mics and hard places it's almost impossible it seems like these phone manufacturers would come up with some kind of solution for this 👍🏻
@@JohnDaniels I agree! I think in the future they will come up with a solution but for now it’s hard to get inbuilt stereo wind protected recordings. Filmic pro allows you to select mics but not the stereo ones either side
@@JohnDaniels My phone has 2 mics also, just cover up both mics with the foam.. I glued a little piece of seating foam to my tripod so my phone is resting on it. PS: Thanks again for the foam idea, saved my dogtraining vids.

Not true. On my iPhone 11 Pro the video mic is on the back of the phone right next to the 3 lenses.

Some phones record in stereo, and have mics on top and bottom of the phone, did you put wind guards on both mics?

I ran the Dallas Marathon using this technique and I had to use a program called open camera and then within that program I had to record mono which only recorded audio from the bottom speaker and that's where I put the wind blocker on and the video sounds great but it was really windy that day so it really does work 👍🏻

The iPhone 12 has mics next to the lens & on both sides so this solution wouldn’t work unfortunately 😂
Yeah that makes it a lot harder, you can look and see if there's an option to only record on certain mics. On my new Google phone it has microphones on the top and bottom and I tried to stop the wind on the top one and could not get it to work so I use this photo app called open camera and inside there they had an option for mono recording which only recorded from the bottom line and so I put the hair roller on the bottom of the phone and it works perfect. But you're right if it has multiple mics and hard places it's almost impossible it seems like these phone manufacturers would come up with some kind of solution for this 👍🏻
@@JohnDaniels I agree! I think in the future they will come up with a solution but for now it’s hard to get inbuilt stereo wind protected recordings. Filmic pro allows you to select mics but not the stereo ones either side
@@JohnDaniels My phone has 2 mics also, just cover up both mics with the foam..
I glued a little piece of seating foam to my tripod so my phone is resting on it.
PS: Thanks again for the foam idea, saved my dogtraining vids.
