- Today I'm talking about 4 free alternatives to using Netflix (or another paid streaming option) for watching new content. The subscription economy is clearly out of control and our wallets need a break, so try using these 4 sources to get your media and reap the financial rewards!

I'm sure this doesn't apply to all the countries, but for me, the moment that killed every streaming platform for me (and I had ALL that are available in my country, Prime, Netflix, HBO, etc...) was when I searched a rather known movie and couldn't find on ANY platform.
Said fuck it, fired up my old laptop, installed Plex, sailed the 7 seas and never looked back.
Yeah it’s crazy to me how hard it is to find some pretty commonplace titles on any of the main streaming platforms. Cannot blame you for taking that route!
It’s the pirate’s life for me
Yo’hoy
Yo’hoy
And a bottle of rum 😊
I have heard that Jellyfin is better than Plex and everything is free and open-source.
Netflix before COVID was a fantastic service, but unfortunately the 7 seven seas today give to the user a much better service than any streaming service. Stremio with the terrentio plug-in and you have any movie or serie you can think of, with the best quality possible, the subtitles of any language and this on demand and for free on any android, google tv, window or Linux device. You can't ask for more.
@@spencers-adventures I love Tubi. It’s all free better Netflix better than Hulu.
The local library was a life hack I discovered as a kid, now in my 30’s with kids I appreciate it even more - for movies, books and music! Great content!
It's a pity that Republicans are attacking it nowadays.
My friend and I when in high school would go to the local public library to study and listen to records.
@@shenysys You were smart.
@@comradestannis I went to our local public library, but after a time they became too limited in what they have on offer as a lot of people exploited the fact that you pay a fixed penalty for losing a book you rent out, which was substantially less that what that book costs second hand on the market, so anything really interesting and more rare would end up "lost" in a quite short time. I mostly read all they had available that interested me in 4-5 years, so I stopped renewing my card, and from what I heard from my bandmate that still uses it, things haven't improved much, other than the fact that less young people use the library in general.
Movies, music … even books on tape, might be showing my age here but I remember you could rent books with vinyls 😳
I'm old, but I love my PBS subscription with documentaries and travel shows. It supports public broadcasting and if you donate $150 (less than Netflix across 12 months) you get a card with BOGO free deals at restaurants, theaters, even B&B's!
Yeah PBS is great service! I love Ken Burns and he’s always worked closely with PBS. Thanks for the comment!
I should consider getting that service.
I use to love youtube but I have noticed that the ads have become very intrusive on some channels. I was trying to watch a movie reaction and there was an skipable ad every 6 minutes. I find I prefer watching content on DVD.
The BetterHelp sponsorships were abysmal.
Just install an adblock browser extension. I haven't seen an ad on YT in months.
It's still free!
Get a YT ad blocker.... Works on most channels....
Yes they have even some during songs.
I'm addicted to CZcams.
Infinite free content is great. Hard to beat in fact.
Fucking facts man.
I’m right here with you brother. CZcams has literally, and I am by no means exaggerating when I say this, literally raised me.
Me too buddy, me too
TikTok > CZcams
I've been subscribed to Pirate Bay since 2004 and never had any problems.
FINALLY a youtuber talking about the library- its truly shocking to me how few sustainability and low-tech content creators will mention it, makes me SO sad. so thank you!!!
The library is a very important institution and it deserves some big love! Glad you agree!
If you haven't seen this and like libraries, check out Nomad's video too!
czcams.com/video/eHU8p-ciXtk/video.html
We are high tech consumers and we use the library. Our library system is great, I often request Blu rays for new movies that aren't streaming or I don't wanna pay for
Glad to see you mention the library. Fantastic resource for finding stuff - you just have to know what you want first and be willing to be patient!
I will say this I bought a 20 dollar antenna off of Amazon its flat and you can plug it into the wall and it does help a lot by pulling in more channels. The house I live in with a regular antenna channels don't come in very good. Some antennas need a little power to give it that boost to pull in those signals.
Good point, that makes sense that a boost would help 👍
CZcams through Brave. Never watch a commercial EVER again.
I quit every Movie/Series subscription Service and use normal TV and DVD/BR again.
Blu-ray >>
Me too. I found out that i mostly stuck with the same tv shows that I watch often, but the new streaming shows annoyed me quality wise. So i bought those shows as box sets and cancelled all streaming services. Every once in a while i buy dvds if they are sold for a few bucks in supermarkets and if I really like a movie i might buy it on blu ray if it's discounted.
I rather invest the money in used books, they can't remotely stop me from reading those or revoke the license like they can do with digital media, also they can't edit text or pictures and so on.
Digital media is more or less dead to me, it was nice to have in the early days, but it has become a nightmare. Overly expensive, the good stuff is either cancelled, edited or simply not to find in whatever catalogue.
I've always thought that reading is better anyway, and if a film is good enough then I'll get it on DVD or download it, and it surprises people how many books are better than the film version, I swear The Godfather book is even better than the movies! People just need to read
Reading is numero uno for sure
DVD is followed up by (4K)Blu-ray and is 720p to 4k in resolution and DVD is only 480i or 576p. So DVD looks kinda weird on current TV
And the good thing is, you can buy used books for cheap in good condition, or get them in the local library.
@@dutchgamer842yes, i can play both on my console, sure br looks better, but dvd is often discounted, for the saved money the quality is good enough. And most people don't have br players, so in libraries you mostly find the dvd version.
Libraries are great. Also, if your local library and its branches don't have something, sometimes libraries in other cities will let you sign up for a library card even if you don't live locally.
That’s a good tip I hadn’t considered!
Great video. I cut the cable years ago and because I live in a big metro area, quickly found there was way more free programming available than I'd ever want to sit down and watch as opposed to going out and doing something. A few notes on that:
It's true that there's no such thing as a "digital antenna" for TV, that's a marketing slogan. What changed was brodcast towers sending signals in a digital format, replacing the old analog one. What therefore became required for older TVs--and I still have one--was a digital-to-analog converter box for TVs that didn't have digital receivers in them.
I'm not sure where Spencer lives, but if he got largely one set of signals in his old location and a different bunch of stations after moving, chances are he could get all channels from both locations from a larger, more suitable antenna. My "Antennas Direct" antenna I've had for years currenty costs $87 USD on Amazon, which ain't nothing, but is a steal over time. It's a medium-sized indoor/outdoor antenna, larger than Spencer's but not one of those giant rooftop deals. And yes, a suitable antenna will receive both UHF and VHF broadcasts. The former--with shorter waves--is far more common, but some locations like mine still have a VHF station or two.
Last but not least, the go-to resource for all things related to TV antennas is Antenna Man's CZcams channel. (Oh, and I find Amazong's Freevee, their free streaming service, has some good content and the commercials aren't too bad at all).
It's inspiring to watch your videos and see you talk about simpler way of living with technology. I often feel like the odd man out (which is a good thing imo) when everyone at work is talking about a new show that came out on netflix or amazon, and I just couldn't care less. I went the antenna on the tv/buy my own dvds route, and I'm much happier watching shows/movies that way. Seeing other people like you enjoying music on their ipod and watching movies the old fashion way is just nice to know other people have the same way of thinking. I do appreciate the videos, they help to know that I have someone to relate to in the regard and inspire me to find new ways of cutting down on technology and live more simply.
Thanks for the nice comment! It’s definitely not a bad thing to be the odd man out once in a while - I often am. It’s been great finding so many likeminded people through sharing on here. Glad you’ve been enjoying the videos!
Do you check out shows that eventually come to physical? Like some of the Disney Plus shows for example
@@shoopypit4884 I don't care about missing a new show or movie because honestly I can live without ever seeing them. The only reason I'm able to watch new shows like Fallout and the new Avatar on netflix is bc people just happen to stream them on discord and I'll watch with them. But if they didn't stream them then I wouldn't mind not seeing them. There's so much cool stuff on dvd and tv that I'm satisfied with what's available
Thank you for the info, and I am looking at all of them!
Didn’t know about Tubi, thank you!👍Like to channel surf with the antenna, a lot of TV’s show the show schedules too.
I have an over-the-ear television antenna and I've really liked that. I'm able to watch weather and news even without using the internet. CZcams's really beneficial. It's my main way of viewing content and then the library. Those free streaming services are really good too. I don't have any subscription ones but I do have a CZcams premium account. Another great video. Looking forward to more content. Nicole is super funny
Glad to hear you’re utilizing both the antenna and the library! And agreed Nicole is hilarious 👍
Foresty Forest is the best! Another great aspect of CZcams is that you can find a lot of classic art films, both mainstream and foreign, that are hard to find anywhere else, for free. Thanks for including the public library system, which also has free BOOKS! 😊
If you have a samsung tv or a samsung phone it comes with "samsung tv" with is basically free cable. It comes 1000s of channels from sports to news to movies, sitcoms (old and new). Just like cable.
I love it!
Great tip - wasn’t aware of that!
Great video Spencer 👌 freevee is one we get here in the UK on the amazon fire stick. That's free with ads. Pluto tv as well on the fire stick. I will have to ask at my library as I've not seen films in there
Let me know what the library says - I’d be surprised if they didn’t have at least a few films. I’ll check out Freevee!
@@spencers-adventures will do! Yeah it seems decent from the films I've seen pop up on it
Hi Spencer! I have been watching your videos for some time and I would like to tell you that I have learned a lot from you and your lifestyle. Best wishes from Poland.
Thanks for the comment :) great to hear from you!
"Digital Antenna" means an antenna specifically cut to the new frequencies that digital TV are on. Old TV used to be at the edge of HF and VHF frequencies. Now they are UHF. You may have some reception but you lose a lot of gain and reception over distance. Get an antenna specifically designed for the frequencies you are using.
Thanks for the alternatives. Great video. I would add Pluto TV to the list also. Question....where are you in Toronto? I'm in the far south/west corner of Etobicoke and although I've been curious about the antenna idea, I always wondered what kind of signal I would get out here. Look forward to your response, thanks in advance.
I am toward downtown somewhat near Bellwoods. I think I honestly am getting the stuff broadcast from the CN tower hence all the Canadian specific programming I get now. You should do pretty well over there! If you can mount an antenna outside to get even better signal I’d recommend going for a bigger one than I have, as you’d get even more channels. Hope that helps!
The way I imagine this streaming thing going is that, they'll all eventually offer a free version with ads and most people will choose that
Love it! Always awesome tips and tricks that just make life better:) Thanks and God Bless as always, my man:) 🙌😊
Thanks Mike! Great to hear from you!
@@spencers-adventures Yessir, my friend, always:) 🙌
I think it would be fun for you to make videos on doing increasingly cryptic communication, with a friend. Starting with a smartphone video call, then the punkt phone, then a landline, then a radio based phone using LoRa open source tech and so on.
I’ll have to look into the last one because I’m not familiar but I love the concept!
What was really frustrating for me is that randomly my internet and phone service would go out or buffer and then I couldn’t watch the show I wanted to. I just started to buy physical media because I don’t need a network to play it.
Tubi is great for discovering shows or movies you didn't know you needed in your life. It also hosts a lot of the MST3K episodes that were officially released on DVD as well as Rifftrax (Mike Nelson) and Cinematic Titanic (Joel Hodgson).
Good to know! Thanks for the comment 👍
"The Lost Room" was a pretty good rewatch, originally on SciFi. You both might enjoy it
I don't like paying for media unless it is physical format or in theaters/concerts.
Make a simple OTA (Over The Air) antenna:
Cut the top and bottom off a tin coffee can with a can opener.
Cut up the side of the coffee can with tin snips to separate it.
Purchase : 1) a 75 to 300 Ohm Balun Converter for Antenna and Coax Cable on TV Receiver; 2) a length of coaxial cable with connectors on each end to attach one end to the Balun converter and the other to your TV’s antenna input. (I suggest at least a 6 ft length. 3) Two tiny nuts and bolts to attach the Balun converter to the middle of the coffee can, one leg on each side of the cut you made wth tin snips. 4) Connect the coaxial cable to the Balun converter and to your antenna input on the TV. 5) Set your can antenna in a nearby location. 6) Turn on your TV. Select antenna. Run the channel discovery app to see how many channels you get. My son in Gatineau gets more than a dozen OTA channels.
Love this! Thanks for the detailed instruction 👍
Spencer, great channel, love the concept.
Did you ever work for Easynews in Phoenix, a few years ago? Curious, you look just like someone over there.
Yes, CZcams has so much high quality content, i literally have multiple playlists for documentaries, Automotive Stuff, etc.
Tubi and youtube have been game changers since I canceled netflix. Tubi has a lot of older British shows and great cheesy 80s movies too. And they are changing their lineup all the time so it stays fresh
Yoooooo I just checked with my library and wow, I had no idea they even knew what a streaming service was. But I'ma have to check some of this stuff out (pun intended).
Love a good pun!
Love exploring my city’s numerous local libraries and finding CDs, taking them home and burning them onto my iPod!
may also get hoopla for 10 movie or tv show rentals a month with your library to stack on the kanopy rentals.. i get 4 digital services through library but the other two are music and books
I’ll look into that, thanks for the tip!
CZcams is the only subscription service I use. I started payying because I THOUGHT I wanted to start a Channel. I still do, but its not that important to do so now.
YT is my TV. It has everything! Try watching those scary videos alone at 3am and see...you'll be shooked. I saw one the other night...Dude edged himself closer to rhe bathroom, and in the bathtub was this..WTF?!! Turned on every light in the house.
The Why Files!! Diary of a CEO...yes, I ordered Annie Jacobsen new book on Nuclear War. ...and i served during rhe Cold War over in Germany and was in a Nuclear Ready Artillery Unit.
CZcams is The BEST thing on the internet. I grew up watching PBS, Sesame Street, Zoom, and The Electric Company. Kids SHOULD be watching Educational CZcams!!
Thx for the Video. Unfortunately I live 40km from the city so no broadcast for me. Did not know about library streaming - need to check that out. I do spend a lot of time on CZcams, and We do have the family plan because I hate content interrupted by ads. I also have Netflix but considering dropping it.
Definitely check into library streaming! Sounds like you have the other bases covered already, but in the case of the broadcast range, I think you just need a much bigger antenna lol! Thanks for the comment :)
@@spencers-adventures a much bigger antenna would only get me (1) CTV station and (1) Global station - maybe.
I'm moving to a combination of dvds and sailing the high seas and plex. I am so done with a streaming service being able to take anything away at any point. Even if you "own" the thing digitally, if you can't download it DRM free then it can and will be taken away at some point later. I'm done with ads and my data being sold while I'm also paying for these services.
Anither thing... I havent watched regular TV in so long, that i miss commericals. Im6 from NYC, but havent been there in almost 3 years, and when I was, i wqs mostly downloading, torrents all movies and TV shows. But I miss commericals.
I can't download magazines like before either. Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, Mens Journal... All those magazines of yesteryear fell away to The Digital Era, and couldn't keep subscribers up. I enjoyed reading on Sunday...NY Daily News, New York Post, and The NY Times...while watching Sunday Morning..and laptop at my side to look further into what inwas reading or watching on TV.
Now, convince my wife and I think I could save about $70 per month. lol. Lately, it’s been all CZcams, Kanopy, Tubi for me for video. And Libby and Hoopla for all reading. Great content.
That aerial for me is all scrambled how can l unscramble?
Kanopy also exists in Australia
We have to support libraries now more than ever now that they're being attacked nation-wide.
If most of the people who do the sub thing stop giving them the money. They’ll change, I still living somewhat mid 2000’s 😂 and love it.
I know there is more to it than that though a lot of people went down that path and look at how things are today.
Great video thank you!
I do have a few streaming services I use, but I mainly just pop in a Blu-ray
Can't get tubitv in UK, I know it's a question of a VPN, but can't be bothered with the faff
For me we should have a pay as you go system across all media.
I’m a musician and we get SO little money from streaming. As a writer - if the record company is taking £5000 we get £30.
The whole system needs changing.
I’ve been wondering why you popped up in my video suggestions. Now I know; we watch the same CZcams channels, LOL! The algorithm works, all hail the algorithm!
Love this comment! Glad you found the channel 👍
I need to get off my behind and get a library card again!
I’m using Tubi to watch all of the Dark Shadows soap opera
Was a Netflix member since the beginning of time, but canceled my membership 6 months age because of cost and the fact that their Netflix Original Series (offerings)started to decline. Yeah, I still have Disney, Paramount and Amazon, but being honest, I can’t stand watching video content if it’s saturated with Ads.
I subscribe to electricity and an internet connection. I can get any content I like.
Yeah, i am not ever going back to watching commercials!
Love Forresty Forest and According to Nicole.
It also sucks alot that many of the streaming services are not available in Canada here.
It annoyed me, because i finally found 2 which looked good and were free, but were not available to get because of my location.
And vpns only work sometimes. Long gone are the days where you just download and use it, and it works with little work.
It's definitely annoying when we're not able to access stuff like that. However Pluto, Tubi, & Plex all work and have tons of shows to watch. I can't believe there were like 10 places playing American Pickers for free and I paid for StackedTV for like 6 months a few years back lol.
I have an antenna and I actually watch more of the free streaming than the paid . I don’t like subscription services unless I really want the service.
I love Tubi they have great movies every month, I recently watched Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle.
8:55 eamon and bec are my top favorite channel
They’re wonderful people!
I got parent that inherited a home with a tower antenna.
I get mad they won't paint it. You should paint that every 10 years for it to last.
The odd thing, antenna works better than it did make when they were popular. Digital signals really helped them.
That said even the main channels like CBS ABC NBC prob won't carry big games of sports in 5, 10 years.
I would not be surprised if sports rights are sold. Yet like commercial building contracts for sports viewing is decades long.
That said. Who knows. Antenna has oddly always gotten better with time.
The reason I focus on live with Antenna is because Antenna can't start and stop like new technology. It just goes when the show is aired.
Some channels will play contine shows as well. People love that with things like Hallmark because it just create a theme in the home even when you are not watching much.
I personally feel sick when people stream 4k WIFI. So I prefer watching digital content non WIFI.
Some show have fan following. Since it airs at same time it is fun to find that group and like or comment as you watch it.
Tubi has the most recent Batman, THE BATMAN, from 2022!
That’s a huge pull for Tubi!
@@spencers-adventures I was stunned they had it.
That CZcams part almost got me😂😂
My thing is, I don't like ads. Too much to get into, but I just don't like them.
Thankfully, my local library has a really good selection of DVDs. If they don't have something, a nearby library might. I couldn't have watched Dead Poets Society without my local library. (I highly recommend that movie to anyone who hasn't seen it, btw.) Now to talk them into adding Kanopy...
Depending on browser/ad blocker method, some get blocked better or worse. Just this week Vivaldi managed blocking ads on Tubi for me. It's a weird flash of black, but it doesn't give me a headache.
Oh nice unexpected Amyl and the Sniffers! Greta band, so good live.
They’re great!
Yarrrr!
There's a ton of free stuff out there only reason I have Netflix, prime, Disney+ is because I use my parents account. Only thing I pay for is MAX and Hulu. I've built up my physical media collection and I plan on pirating some stuff as well.
Tubi doesn’t let me download the app I’m assuming because I’m in the uk any alternative
Try a VPN. Might solve the problem.
Look up FAST (Free Ad-Supported TV) services. There are listicles that have Tubi, Amazon's Freevee, and others. Some definitely are worse and likely unavailable to you in the UK (e.g., USAmerican company NBC has Peacock which has less and less for free).
Since joining CZcams Red I've never had time to use any other streaming service
I like simplicity 😊
Nothing on Netflix interests me, they don’t have older movies or documentaries (only new ones). Can search a movie and no service has it, even worse because I’m not in America so I’m limited to what is available where I live. I prefer the library, they have more things I like.
Not sure how good an antenna signal would be in the Australian scrub.
Perhaps if you get a very large antenna you could still pick up something! I’ve seen people in very remote parts of Canada use signal boosters to pull in cellphone service to their properties so anything is possible
The only thing about CZcams ads are the quality and the intrusiveness of the ads. Half the YT ads are for scammy type crap and are of questionable origin and depending on the creator they come up quite often. Tubi is much better in the ads department and they only show you just enough to keep their platform profitable.
Agreed Tubi has a good balance of ads to not taint to content. CZcams especially bothers me when the ads are completely left field. Like a random minimalist CZcamsr I was watching started doing a vape ad and it threw me lol
Be forewarned that Tubi and Pluto(and Plex) don't show the current shows. You'll get the very old shows of like Star Trek with Dr. Spok, Old Game Shows like Family Feud with Richard Dawson, nothing is of the current seasons. All old stuff - which sometimes is ok. And, some movies will be repeated over and over, nothing, nothing current.
I love the old stuff!
Physical Media must never die
ive shifted back to it INTENSELY
but I'd sooner cut off my left hand than live without CZcams Premium
those adds would kill months of my life.
A lot of these free channels are not available in South Africa 😢
Take a google around! There’s got to be some free options for your area 👍
Older TVs will need a digital converter.
I use Tubi and CZcams
October 10, 2010 I started my netflix account, May 6 2024 I cancelled after I got the 'offer' to skip ads on netflix, or go to the cheaper alternative subscription and be forced to watch ads while streaming. Nah. F**k netflix.
I absolutely love Tubi. I watched
Peeping Tom
The night of the hunter
The children's hour
Orgasmo
The babysitter
Last house on the left
When a stranger calls
Sleepaway camp
Black Christmas
I spit on your grave
The graduate
The strangler
Carnival of souls
Persona
They're all old movies but for someone like me who's into pre Hayes code media and the Hollywood Renaissance.
There's also good shows on there too. I used to watch Jem and the holograms on the Hub Network back when I was in middle school we had premium channels so not many got to experience the gem of a show (no pun intended) and I re-watched a few episodes and fell in love with the show all over again. It's a campy 80s cartoon about a girl band running a foster home for girls and they're being terrorized by their Late father's business partner and a band called the Misfits.
Strange concept but somehow it works 🤧
Awesome videos sorry I’m sooo late
At this point in my life, I don’t care about legality. I know what sites I can watch everything on and I don’t have to leave the house to watch anything. Life is just so much simpler with an adblocker and a binge site
I have to say the developer of No Man Sky has made quite something of himself :p
Yah…. Canadian Content… thanks for sharing.
I mean Tubi is free, right?
If you lived in the UK, you would know about Freeview, the clue is in the name.
Did he say ALF?
I certainly consume more CZcams than anything else, but still significantly less than previously, reading books and spending time in nature has literally taken over for me.
Antenna is free. I don't know about internet. Some might be able to get it free. I don't.
Who remembers when you used to able to find full episodes of tv shows on CZcams regularly
The good old days! Ninja Turtles is still on here though 👍
so glad i have dvd rips of 1000's of movies. streaming was great when it was all on 1 or two places. why pay for netflix when the movies you like get removed. so many hours spent scrolling for something to watch. done with it.
I watch two ads in your video also 😂
Good thing it's free!
You and I have incredibly different ideas of good things to watch.
Lol I love documentaries too - but fair enough!
Best of part of this video is your hair 😎
I like Pluto tv
A lot of good anime also
- Use a dumb phone after being awake for 12 hours. I follow
I'm loving my IPTV
Yes there really is no such thing as a "digital antenna". Of course there are newer more modern designs...but a 75 year old antenna can also pickup "digital channels"
Only a uhf antenna and not a vhf one
yeah theres a bunch of free Tv Apps on my U.S.A. Tv service in WhiteMarsh,MD I cam look up a bunch of them if ur interested in the many FREE Tv station Apps OK Bra , I Hope u n ur MOM's & Family members had a great n HappyMothersDay... I don't NO if u selibrate MothersDay on the same day Butt still Keep in-Touch OK Peace!!!/Out... I gotta Bail OK!!!
I've never owned a flat-panel TV, I can't justify getting one as there has been nothing worth watching on Australian free-to-air television since the late 1990s. "Reality TV" killed it for me, with inane shitheads running around a house all day doing fuck all, passing off as riveting entertainment. I won't pay to watch TV via streaming services.
The free options are definitely much better than paid with ads anyways. Agreed reality TV is trash - I’ve had the misfortune of working on a few so I understand lol
@@spencers-adventures Mine is also of attention span. Television fails to hold my attention for no more than about five minutes, before I start looking around for things to read or do something else. TV is mind numbingly boring.
youtube costs more than my cable service so i'll keep cable
Fair enough! If you’re getting a good price on cable then I can’t argue with that 👍
