How did Slidebean spend its first $250K?
We have a policy of sharing some of our finances and our lessons as part of our transparency marketing. We started doing this back in 2015, inspired by companies like Buffer and Baremetrics, whose own blog posts and materials were an inspiration for us.
We are taking a trip down memory lane to understand how Slidebean was formed, where the first money came from, and how we spent it.

This videos works on so many levels.. Not only does it inform an audience of those who are simply curious on how start ups spend their funding but I’ve discovered in total, 4 different customer segments.
1. The lay audience such as myself who’s just curious on how startups works.
2. The upcoming entrepreneurs who are looking for guidance on how to get a start up running (likely to subscribe to your account and potentially buy in on the slide bean features down the line).
3. Actual start ups who are creating pitch decks (which you’ve roped in through your analysis of how other start ups fail) and need something like slide bean.
4. Potential investors giving them full transparency on your financials + your other activities within the startup to promote the business
aka it’s an educational video + pitch to your product at the same time. it’s genius
>> it’s an educational video + pitch to your product at the same time. it’s genius
This is quite literally the backbone of all our marketing. It's a thin line to avoid making the content too salesy.
I appreciate that you appreciated this!
Absolutely amazing. What a strategy!
Can I get your mail please?

I am thinking about a new type of restaurants : eating-spots,
in eating-spots, food keeps changing, chefs also rotate.
this is opposed to current restaurants,
thanks to this rotation of food and chefs, eating-spots are way more powerful than restaurants,
along with that, there is an app,
people vote for the food that will be cooked in the next days.
menu is influenced by the live input of the people via an app
I'm a product manager in Silicon Valley, and this video was awesome. A combination of product + content marketing, but also in that it's incredibly personal and informative. You are a genius in this. So many enterprise companies need to learn from you. Great job Caya
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for sharing!
Hey man hope you are well, how has the start up ecosystem been changing in silicon valley in the past couple of years?
could you share please?
Its unbelievable how much deep the information (embedded with the ground reality) Caya shares in every video.
And getting all this experience with info for FREE ? What could be better !

South Africa is waiting Caya! and my team and I have learned a lot from you guys keep up the good work
If you are a white guy, don't hold your breath. We just went through a funding discussion with a local investor that wanted 45% for slightly more than we as founders had put in ourselves over the last 30 months. If you are 51% black-owned then you might get a better deal but in our case, it wasn't worth bringing in a partner that wouldn't be able to positively contribute to the business. Either way, you'll be better off (and receive more investor love) by registering your company outside South Africa.
All our love back to South Africa! Thank you for watching!
@@AuthGate so your assumption or reason for not getting a black partner is that if you do, they wouldn't positively contribute?
@@5995Jiol My one business partner is actually a black guy with a 10% shareholding, so no, the issue is not about race. It is about racist laws that excludes minority white guys like me from actively participating in the economy unless I hand over a large chunk of my business to a fat cat with government connections.
@@AuthGate don't let him bait you... Apartheid was condemned around the world, but now that the natives are doing the exact same thing while destroying the country at the same time, nobody thinks it is wrong. I have a few coworkers from S Africa who had to abandon family businesses, bank accounts, property, because it was being seized by natives and given to their cronies.
Absolutely brilliant video. One of the few channels anywhere where you always wonder which was better, the substance of the content or the style it was delivered. Thank you.
You spoke my mind.
Another great video! It's rare to find a startup CEO that displays such transparency and candor when discussing these issues. Love your content and your style. Keep it up!
I can second a lot of that: A lot of startups invest huge amounts of resources (time and money) to attend conferences and raise at a very early stage instead of
getting more traction. We had this issue with the last company I was involved, where the CEO was 90 percent of the time not in the office and not working on the product, but
just in fundraising mode which cost us at least 8 months.
Thanks for sharing!
I’m ready, Caya! Thank you for all the work the Slidebean Team puts into these. I’ve learned more from these videos in the past 4 months, than it the year I’ve been researching this topic. Honest, detailed oriented and well thought out. Thanks again!
This video is incredible. Quality content delivered in a most digestable way possible. Thank you very much!
I wish I knew this channel months ago. The amount of knowledge has been very relatable and applicable, probably the best financial decision i have made this year.
Never too late! Welcome aboard!
So I purchased an annual license last week as I was pitching for a bit of business and my old PPT looked dated!! I want to say we won the pitch!! obviously not down solely to the Slidebean deck (it did help in some areas we missed and looked a lot better) but for some reason Jose started to appear on my CZcams feed. I would have scrolled passed, but I had just purchased Slidebeam so I thought I'd watch it. I love Jose's honesty and insightfulness, being a business owner I find his video's really useful. I may have become an evangelist Thanks Slidebeam & Jose.
Hi, Saybhan! This is AWESOME to read! We're happy we're able to help you in your entrepreneur journey. Please keep us updated!
Thanks man, Amazing, so honest, clever, so much info, all the best guys!
Absolutely Brilliant video, you've basically answered many of the questions i was looking for, and a couple i picked up along the way bravo guys!
Sir when I come here and see this title my blood pressure rises in excitement then I see premier in time I just ...it's like dream crashing 😭

As a fellow founder who has raised $145k to-date and only properly controlled burn/the stage of spending for the last $35k, I can relate so much to this video. Haha

Glad to know we have helped. *Best of luck!*

i love you guys!
Thank you for your support!
I actually wanted to ask what you think of consulting / building products for other companies to get cash in to build a product. we're building a product as well, we have 3 devs dedicated to the client work (most days of the week) and 1 on moving our tools features forward. I'm happy to see that it's a known thing to do. I thought i was wasting time, but we've been cashflow positive every month given my content is about building large client applications. This has helped me get enough contracts to sustain the entire team and work on the products. Awesome video! Thanks for sharing.

Hi, Arjun! We use Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects!
Hey caya when you make the videos, did you make it with script? or remember everything?
I have some mad teleprompter reading skills.
Hi Caya, would love to have a video dedicated to this CZcams channel- how much revenue does it bring in relative to what you make from slidebean? How much does it cost to run, operate and maintain? How long did it take to make a profit off running a CZcams channel? Etc. Thought it'd be super interesting!! Especially with the rise of entrepreneurial CZcamsrs who make the bulk of their monthly income through CZcams ad revenue alone. (Eg, like Graham Stephen) Thanks for all that you do!

The ads for this video is killing me!!!
this guy is kinda smart though he makes a youtube channel for hopeful entrepreneurs and lowkey sells his product to us, now i wanna create a slidebean account
Hi Jose. I share the same sentiment that for a B2B and SaaS business, it has to start generating income as soon as possible after the beta is launched. However, whether it breakeven, net profit or burning through funds raised, depends on the market and business model is another thing. By having people or companies willing to pay for the service, is a proof that the model is probably working. However, this can be a double edge sword. It may hindered taking risk to pivot to a much faster and longer growth but it may save the company from having sufficient cash flow to reach profitability. How do you find the balance? It depend on a lot of things but what are the key questions one should ask? When is exactly a good time to start looking for funding?
Good Q! Welcome to discuss with other founders or Caya on Discord slidebean.com/startup-cafe
Can you make a business video about how companies buy other companies with cash and stock
Noted!
Would be interesting if the whole purpose of your slidebean adventure is to discover your calling of being a startup consulting company x)
LOL. I don't think is a calling as much as figuring out the market demands, and pivoting the company towards that.
I admire you caya. Can you do a video on how to spend the $250,000 the right way
