  • Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the weaponry of Battlefield 1, including the tiny Kolibri pistol, the Borchardt C-93 semi-automatic pistol, and the Villar Perosa M1915 automatic firearm.
    Battlefield 1 takes the long-running shooter franchise into the First World War, and as a result, it includes a range of period weaponry such as the M1915 Hellriegel machine gun, the Bergman MP18 submachine gun, and the Burton 1917 light machine rifle.
    In the above video, Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of Battlefield 1 and compares them to their real-world counterparts.

      @Konghammer1 Před 3 lety +66

      @@chawnce1 How does it do that? Having a plethora of weapons that didn't actually exist can't possibly by definition, increase immersion. People just need to get over EVERYTHING needing to be an arcade game. You don't get a ww1 game going "oh boy I hope there is a bunch of stuff that never actually existed in the game." If you don't like bolt actions and semi-auto rifles then maybe instead of turning the game into a run and gun cod copy you should just stick to playing cod and leave battlefield where it was supposed to be, a more historically accurate tactics and team based shooter with large scale warfare. All adding these extra guns did was end up filling battlefield with the same foul mouthed out of control 12 year olds that cod has who have ZERO business in these games.

      If someone wants a realistic shooter that relies on tactics, then can play ARMA, Squad, or maybe (and this is a stretch) insurgency. The Battlefield franchise was always arcade. For fucks sake, Battlefield 1942 had a jetpack. Remember when the Japanese used German weapons to fight US soldiers on the legendary battle of Wake Island? Made up for the game. How realistic.
      The lead designer of 1942 even states that it was made as an action romp first and foremost. He even stated that historical accuracy was a spice always trumped by the gameplay.

    • @chawnce1
      @chawnce1 Před 3 lety +74

      @@Konghammer1 As @GrazingLemur already said Battlefield has never been super realistic. Its an arcade/sim, a step higher than COD but a far cry from ARMA or similar full sims. At the end of the day even those are far from real war. Personally I think BF1 still has a lot of good tactics and team play, people don't use mics and squad play like they used too but get a group of friends and youre golden. And I didnt realize that people had a problem with map size being too small. I thought most maps were pretty good and I've actually heard some complaints about maps being too big. On the immersion front I simply meant the gun selection makes the game easier to play and funner for most people to play. As least for me it made it more approachable and got me to play more of the game. After that the tactics of the game modes, the fantastic graphics, and great sound design got me imerrsed. To the level where sometimes when I run around a corner and see a tank or see a squad of the enemy my heart drops a little. Thats what I mean by immersion. And as a sidenote, enjoying the game encouraged me to read more books about the war and learn the history.

    Two things to say:
    Firstly, I only just noticed now that when the player is reloading the Kolibri and racks the slide that the guy still has his finger on the trigger. With the distribution of force on such a tiny gun I'm pretty sure that he would fire off a round as he's reloading. Not too big of a safety concern for a Kolibri, but worth pointing out.
    Second, on the topic of Villar-Perosa stock's I have seen images of authentic Villar-Perosa's with a kind of weird clubfoot stock, but A I'm not sure whether it was meant to assist in shoulder firing or support when fired prone and B I'm not even sure whether they are period WW1, or maybe a post-war effort to make the gun less cumbersome.

      @@overlordedsithii The AM MRS-4? Doesnt really look anything like the Howa Type 89 to me, if anything it looks like a mix of a FN FAL (In the charging handle and part of the upper reciever) and the ZM LR-300 thats mostly popular in games and is unobtanium in real life. Its all approximations though, you'll find features that look like other guns but it all comes together to make a different gun. Like the Karbaga-83, obviously inspired by the Saiga or Vepr 12, but there are parts in it that remind me of the tube stock Valmets, and parts that dont look like any gun in particular at all.

    How about a video where Jonathan gets to pick 10 weapons he would want to see in video games, either for looks, unusual reloading mechanism or just because they would fit into certain games really well. Maybe do it in categories. 2 Semi Auto Pistols, 2 Revolvers, 2 Shotguns, 2 Assault Rifles, 1 Sniper/DMR and 1 LMG.

    There was a version of the Villar Perosa with a buttstock - sort of. Just after the war the OVP was created, which was basically half of a Villar Perosa fitted to a wooden buttstock and normal trigger.

    Some modified Villar Perosa with stock were issued to italian infantry "Arditi" as soon as 1917, after they already proved useful in the original configuration; so the Villar Perosa does qualify as the first submachine gun that saw action in WWI
