- It took me many hours of digging through CZcams tutorials to learn grease pencil, and now I've squashed all of that knowledge into 9 minutes. This is literally all you need to know to start doing 2d animation in Blender. The hardest part is knowing where things are, and now you know. Captions provided by the amazing LowKey, thank you so much!

Good tut, but you can change colors that have used the COLOR ATTRIBUTE, instead of a material. Just click on the TINT TOOL, pick a color and stroke. You can actually get a blend effect with this tool. Scrolling to right on the passed RADIUS and FILL, you can choose whether the TINT effects FILL, STROKE, or BOTH.
Amazing!! Thank you, that's awesome and thanks for posting 😊
Wow, I considered myself an intermediate/advanced Grease Pencil user, but I learned SO much from this tutorial! I've never seen a GP tutorial so densely packed with useful info, and the fact this is only a month old means all of this should be relevant for a long time. Thank you for posting! I've never subscribed to a tutorial channel so fast.
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad it helped, and I'll do my best to keep up the quality :)
i love how entertaining you are in this vid, ive been dreading to begin tackling this but your energy makes me feel better
Aww thank you! That's very encouraging 😁
This is the pace I'm looking for. Thank you for not wasting my time and giving everything I want. 👍👍
My pleasure. I try to be as succinct as I can 😁 thanks for watching!
Dude. This should be the starting tutorial for everyone getting on Grease Pencil. I have been on it for months and not saying anything bad about all the other brilliant educators out there because I love them all....Mumu Mundo Sophie Jantak Dantti Kevandram tuat555 CG Cookie and many many more. But this is so straight to the point that it is insane. Welcome to my life and to the galaxy of brilliant stars of Blender!
I'm following you and tagging you in what I do very soon!
Hey, thank you so much! My goal was to be as succinct as possible so that people could actually just jump in and start without hours of digging through tutorials. I'm really happy that it's helpful!
@@moltenbolt you achieved it athousand fold! I am that person that has been digging thorugh tutorials and needed this.
Still want to underline that those other educators are all wonderful and so glad to have you next to them.
As someone who has a hard time without subtitles, thank you for adding subtitles and thanks for making this very useful tutorial!
My pleasure! Thanks for the kind comment! 😁
Thanks for making this! I'm excited to see more 2d animation/ grease pencil tutorials in blender, heah!
You're very welcome! And thank you for the kind words. There's a lot more to come for grease pencil, and even more for Blender in general!
This is so brillant!!! It's wonderfully explained and thank you for telling me about the layers shortcut! That will be sooo useful! I also love the idea of creating a shadows layer at the beginning! I'm totally gonna have to use that!!!
Hey, I'm glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching 😄
insanely good video; ridiculous how much good stuff you managed to pack into eight and a half minutes
top job, my friend
subbed
Thank you 😁 I'm glad you liked it!
This is Brilliant! I've learned something and your tutorial was very entertaining! Instant Subscriber. Thank you so much!
Awesome, thank you very kindly!
Making it look so easy! Found this really helpful, thanks!
Thank you, glad it helped!
Yeah he is making it look so easy. I was literally trying it out for the first time today, and got hard stuck. I didn't even take note of the Layers, and never even saw the button "Draw Strokes on Back". Time to try again. Thanks for saving us the hours rummaging around.
@@chillbro2275 My pleasure. I was also hard stuck for a loooong time hahah. I'm happy to have helped!
so coool tutorial, so useful and dynamic, thanks a lot now you have a new sub
I'm glad it helped! Thank you 😊
I'll probably forget this tutorial exists later but THANK YOU FOR WRITING SUBTITLES
You are very welcome, but it is my good friend Lowkey who insists on being the legend that adds actual nice subtitles. Thank you Lowkey!!
Congratulations for the "mouth sound effects". Good video!
Thank you 😁
All I can say is... YES!
Hahah, mission successful then! Thank you!
Nice tutorial 👍Could you explain in the end while doing the eye mouth animation why did you duplicated your keyframes if you could just draw and auto keyframes would done the same?
If I recall correctly, I duplicated the frames in order to keep the exact circle shape rather than re-draw it. It's been a long time since I made the video though, so I might have just been dumb 😁
@@moltenbolt yes ofcourse, i didnt notice that i thought the face was on different layer now it makes sense, thanks for the reply, youre a good tutor 👍
@@Sanimated thank you 😁 that's very nice of you to say!
The tutorial was really really great! Until HYah HyAH HYAH. I just can't focus on any other words now D:
I know 😬 I stopped using it after the Voltorb video for that exact reason. Still a new channel and figuring out my format. Thanks for your kind words though, and rest assured there aren't any more Hyahs after the Ucupaint video 😉
Looking forward to Grease Pencil 3.0, although I don't know when it will be released.😂
Same, lots to look forward to with Blender this year 😁
Can you draw on transparent backgrounds, and render out drawings with a transparent background?
Great question! I haven't tried to do that yet, but Blender usually handles transparency with no issues, so it should work! I gotta try it out now hahah 😁
@@moltenbolt Neattt
Render settings > film > transparent.
the demo at the end. Its actually easy?? Also it is already called layers
Yep its actually super easy to do. Learning what and where is normally the hard part
Great vid. I have an issue though. How did you get the Solid stoke, squares stroke, solid fill, and dots stoke in your materials tab? Mine always comes up empty. I am putting a grease pencil empty into a 3D scene btw
To be honest, I'm actually not sure, but my guess is that it's likely from an add-on that I installed at some point in the past, if it isn't the default.
@@moltenbolt I gotchu, makes sense. I ended up making my own and they work great. Once again though, fantastic video, it really helped!
Thank you, that's really encouraging 😁@@matespey6405
4:20 How'd you get a VRM material tab while selecting a grease pencil object?
Good eyes! It's not a default tab. I have a VRM add-on for Blender installed in that version from when I was fiddling around with 3D avatars. The Blender add-on I used can be found here: vrm-addon-for-blender.info/en/
I hope that answers your question, and happy blending!
COOL! Imma try it out, thank you!@@moltenbolt
It should be possible to change object data properties to layers using python. I'm not a programmer, I dabble, but I don't see why that couldn't work. Anyone who's better than me at python feel free to take that idea and run with it. In the meantime, I'm researching this. The only issue that may get complicated is switching from grease pencil to 3D. The tools change when you switch modes so I think it should work. Anyone who has feedback feel free to reply, whether good, bad, or screeching
I think a mode-sensitive renaming of the tabs wouldn't be terrible as an option. I don't think it should be renamed by default - Blender's navigation is already... intense for beginners. But having the option to choose or set a different name might be nice, yeah 😁
Brittle souls
Cryptic and poetic at the same time. Nice 😁
i was there
Wow
Hope it was helpful! 😁
Did I hear a South Park reference
One or two perhaps lmao
hahaha I don't know SP but I appreciate where you're coming from
nhere
Hahah yes. The nyah vanishes in later videos 😁
It is not so easy as it looks
Show a cartoon drawing with filling and filling the shadows.
Its afterwards easy but not when you begin.
Hey, thanks for your feedback! I'll definitely take your advice next time I'm demonstrating grease pencil.
I'm not sure I understand your comment correctly but I'll do my best. The process for filling in the lines and shadows is the same as drawing the new faces that I show in the demo at the end. You can either duplicate the keyframe to a new position and then erase and draw something new, like in the demo - or if you have auto-keyframe turned on, you can just move to a new frame then start drawing and that layer will replace itself. This works for all layers and all tools.
Hopefully that helps!
@@moltenbolt why is there a fill bucket you have to choose jour pencil that is weared.
@@antoonsorg It is weird, I agree!
The difference is that the pencil tool lets you draw a shape that is automatically filled with color.
The paintbucket tool will only fill in closed shapes, you can't draw a shape with it. It is only used to fill other shapes with color.
Hope that helps!
@@moltenbolt I thinks its confused
why you saying "nya~" so often?
Channel was still new and was figuring out the format. The nya stops in later vids 👍
gno?
Just show how you can shadow fill a cartoon.
And why is there a fill bucket when jou use the pencil for color fill.??!
That is not logical.
I do show how to shadow fill a cartoon in the video, here: czcams.com/video/IzrNHYNrdI0/video.html
Where I use the draw tool on a layer [with the layer blend mode set to multiply] to draw in a shadow on the circle. This is how you add shadows to your drawing. If you are wanting to fill the entire drawing on that layer with a shadow color instead of just shadowing a part of it, then use the fill bucket instead of the draw tool.
I'll be sure to clarify this in future demonstrations!
The fill bucket tool exists so that you can simply double-click within a drawn shape to very quickly fill it with color, which is much faster than coloring by tracing the inside of your lines while using the draw tool. They each have their uses!
Every time you said "here" it was so distracting I found it extremely difficult to follow the video. I'm sure you thought it was endearing or clever or something....
Hi 😁 thank you for your feedback. You are not alone in that it was distracting for you, for sure. My goal is to make quality content that maximizes the amount of people who can learn from it, so the strange 'here' will be vanishingly rare moving forward.
Thanks again for watching and for taking the time to comment and help me make my content better 😊
@@moltenboltI didn't mind, I thought it was hilarious. 😂 I appreciate you actually using your voice instead of a robot tutorial.
pls dont use that "here" 😅. its annoying.
I stopped using it later, for that exact reason 👍
@@moltenbolt one time i did a tutorial with a mosquito voice effect. i got so many bad reviews i had to change it. but your tutorial is awesome so i didn't mind.
Thank you! I'm still very new to CZcams and I'm still developing my format. I really do appreciate the feedback too 😁@@101touchapps
