How to do ACTIVE RECALL Effectively? (4 Techniques worked for me)

- Traditional Study Techniques put data into the brain. Active recall is the exact opposite, where the students recall information from the brain. In short, Here are 4 techniques that worked really well for me in medical school.
1) Creating "Recall Questions" from my notes.
2) Using Anki for Active Recall & Spaced Repetition. (Gold Standard Study technique)
3) Using Multiple sensory modalities to study and recall.
4) Doing Practice Questions.
I have a small challenge for you in the video! Here are the Answers to those questions.
1) What is the brain area responsible for memory?
= Hippocampus.
2) What is the main difference between active recall and passive recall?
= Passive recall is uploading information to the brain. Active recall is the process of recalling information from the brain.
3) What are the two study techniques the Anki app is based on?
= Active Recall & Spaced Repetition.
4) Name three ways you can incorporate active recall?
= Creating Questions, Using Anki, Multi-modal recall, Practice Questions.

1. Hippocampus
2. Active recall and spaced repeatation
3. Flash cards spaced repeatation
You should put the question number of the ones you're answering
I think flash card is only useful for memorizing something like vocabulary
since most of the knowledge is isolated and decontextualized
As a muslim, I used to memorize the Qura'an and do the same tachnique which is closing the book and trying to recall the verses by making sure that I made zero mistakes since my childhood and that really helped me in making my memory so strong. I've never encountered obstructions or difficulties on any course that depends on memorizing. However, for those who finds themselves having troubles on memorizing I highly recommend u guys to look over the techniques given in this video!
So true I agree with you totally.
Bravo. Good luck
Seriously bro Muslims are the smartest in memorizing stuff - whether law or medical books.

@@abdullahal-shimri3091Bro,why muslims are smart in memorize?
Even a parrot can memorise stuff but it needs smartness to spell 'technique' correctly and use grammar while writing.
Dont be a parrot 🦜
I used to do this in school then covid came and its like I forgot how to study, this method is truly great, I fortunately started using it again and it definitely is the best.
IKRR im going thru the same thing 😭😭😭😭 i was wondering how tf did i even study back then 💀

Yeah same, the interesting fact is when I try to explain it to myself when walking or moving it forces me to creatively answer the question. When it's right I try to shorten my answer and be more clear towards that imaginary audience. I always thought I was weird for learning like this. Im glad it's the method for better recall instead of highlighting with the impression u transfer the info during highlighting. This is proven to be ineffective for recall, but great to quickly find relevant info about a subject that is connected with the major material of an examen. In summary: Highlighting is great for filtering and to separate relevant and irrelevant information, yet active recall explained in the video is the method for retaining that information for the long term. Maybe u guys find this useful, but this works for me. I use a 4 step proces for longterm info storing. 1. I read just globally and with more like an amusing attitude the material ( a book for tax or law ). 2. When I find the subjects that are more complicated I highlight it and then I read it 1 more time but this time with a thorough understanding. 3. Next i try to make (when provided) some exercises to practice and become more familiar with the material. 4 Then when I am confident enough I try to actively explain it to myself or an imaginary audience, when I am wrong I can go back to the highlighted information to provide myself with the missing info that I was stuttering during the explanation. That's my method, it worked for me almost anytime. Its not the fastest, but for very important subjects ( also shown in the video ) the method for retaining information for long term.

flash card / Anki
Practice question
I've been doing it since so long without realising
JEE aspirant and i realized indirectly without knowing its name i was doing this and 4/4.. anyways its helpful
This technique is pretty good, but it's probably not enough while recalling current affairs for Govt exams cause there are tons of them and if you don't pass in one chance, you will have to quickly learn another pile of ca again. And active recalling bit by bit takes time. It is much easier to go through practice questions if you don't have enough time for revision and you are in desperate need for a job.
I understand the point the video is trying to make but did anyone else absolutely crush the questions at the end lol
Its a 4 minute video our memory is still fresh lol
I know someone who never takes notes in the class but instantly learn the lessons during the class.
She said why takenotes if i can learn it now. She also the most intelligent in the class.
I don't take notes in class either, instead I take notes by myself. I will use various resources and really study the subject and make notes. I find that just me studying a topic myself is way better than a teacher teaching me the same concept.
I ace it 🤩
What is the Anki app you use on iPhone?
Imagination can take you anyplace anytime.. memory can be edited as we please. Like a multidimensional art. Or movie
Thank you Jesus.
Thank you human for your generous sharing of your knowledge On a platform such as this.
Yes thank the LORD
I feel studying methods depend on the subject. For facts and figures, flash cards are great but abstract concepts require writing. For example, read a chapter , then after a day write about it.
sometime wedo same thing but we d=forget that these were the things we use to do . But when we stuck we tend to forget that these technique we use to do in school. now being in clg i am going to do same .
Thank you , it helped me a lot
so some part of this technique is also feynman technique? (please give your perspective)
actually this is the exact same trick for myself....but it actually takes time...if your exam is closer you can try writing down or attempting tests
Wait!?!? I entered thinking I am bad at memory.. Dude I didn't even made any points I just sat and watched this video and yet I somehow answered everything how??
In our country, the education system is very outdated and it sucks. We have to memorize the whole paragraphs on every subjects except maths. If we learn a topic, we have the memorize the whole thing from the textbook and we have to write them down exactly in exams. This is not education. But the silver lining here is we improved our memory a lot as active recall was the only study method for us.
What country are your from?
Where are you from?
@Short_Gut exactly sometimes for half marks.
I answered all question right without cheating
I am excited for th exams
Do i study and right the questions and write the questions at the same time?
Another thing: If your flashcards end up being long, think of how to make other flashcards which use only part of the original flashcard. Still keep the original to tie all the smaller ones together, though. It will be easier to remember the individual facts by using multiple smaller flashcards, then putting them together using the original, bigger one.
what is the best way for learning for ADHD bearing person ??
Usually at the end there are lots of questions and I give up solving all of them.
Notes:
Close the Book and Recall From Your Brain
Create Question
Learn Concepts and Make Question
Then Answer Them
If You Failed then Try Again and Again But Don't Give Up
I m watching this before the night of exam .
sooo im studying for usmle. i got all your answers correct, in fact im capable of almost quoting exactly what you say. BUT all this goes away in a couple days. so basically my short term memory is super good but long term is a mess. i used to study the hardest lessons in medschool the morning of the exam and i would have no issues answering questions but if i study these lessons way earlier, i forget, then i panic, then i convince my self that ill never remember and i actually end up forgetting. my weakness is active recalling. and i desperately need to learn to revise especially now that im doing my step 1 exam.
Were you able to implement this ?
I had the same issue except I’m studying for step 3. I’m using a flashcards app and I can already see the results.

you need ro constantly go over your notes regularly, and then you will notice it going into your long term memory, thats how long term memory works, its the same for me, i remember but after a while i forget. but ive noticed a few topics that ive gone over many times i actually remember after a long time so i suggest regularly going over your notes and testing yourself
I’ve found that creating mental maps with the information you want to remember in the form of unique images such as a crate then routinely doing such whenever theres an opportunity it helps me calm down since I can ignore everything else and focus on expanding the idea and what I can do with it.
I think we can study without making notes too.
Of course!
But making short notes would be easier to revise before exams.
@@Sunshine_Soul02 I agree
@@TinyMedicine I am 1 st year mbbs student
I also think I can study without taking notes 📝 but i am not sure about that

Then how you are doing now
Let me get this out of the way real quick. Active recall is an outstanding concept. However, only one technique is uniformly reliable and IMHO effective, i.e., practice questions.
I failed my gcses and i was a foundation student. I didn’t know how exactly to revise, i was always demotivated
i got all questions right..
Not everyone can practice recall. Life takes recall away from bad people.
If you say recall around them, they will only get angry, and they will never say the word themselves (they can't).
Cool video.
how do u implement this technique on concept heavy, mathematics-heavy degree like engineering?
imo its better to understand more than memorise, i can solve a math equation without naming the steps (thats not a flex its a bad thing)because i didn't memorise and only understood how to solve it.. so if u make it 30% memorise 70% actually solving similar equations it should be good, i get always 100 in math because of this technique.
hey i made mind maps and got all the answers right
Remembering is actually easy.
❤
All 4 ! without notes
bhai ye sab try krlia maine videos inka dekna ka he man nai karta... we JEE aspis follow all of these indirectly and in a productive manner.
Hello, can I get the reference for this? I'm creating a research paper regarding this topic.
If you were smart enough you'd know that a link to the video is the reference
that is true that recall is a good way of memorizing things but it takes a lot of time. Are there any other memorizing techniques where you will memmorize the things without recalling them?
Success is made thanks to hard work. Not taking thing easy. The difficulty and the feeling of active recall makes it work. If you feel it's too easy, then you're probably not doing it right
Try using the mind palace technique that Sherlock Holmes used

Hey I will share my method tho memories every thing:
Hmmmm….so I start with bismillah then read the first line witch the paragraph start with (I prefer to read it a silent read u can read it out loud or maybe whisper it depends of which kind of memory u have 🤷♂️ a quick read like 1,5X then I recit it without Looking then assure on the key words and pass for the next line and repot!!! ThenI recites the first and second’s lines 2gethr then the third line and do the some then recite the 3 lines at once and … second method: u can read a phrase(I really love cooking 🧑🍳) once or twice .
U know that reading ayet el Korsi after every single pray nothing will forbade to enter jannah except deth
I actually doing those but not the questioning myselves
I remembered everything tho

How many minutes we have to practice active recall daily? 😢
I didn't even make notes from the video lmao
1. Hippocampus (tbf, knew this already from psychology)
2. Active recall involves actively thinking about and "digesting" the information. Passive recall involves lack of this stimulation of the brain.
3. Flashcards and spaced repetition
4. Flashcards; Practice questions; Closing the book every so often and trying to remember what you just read.
Active recall close the notes and remember what you read spaced repetition develop questions and flashcards ans arlt back do them today 3 days 7days so on without looking at notes use mutliple sense with aftuve recall imagine teaching to no of srudents or write on white board practice questions at the end also form of active recall also to check your concepts
question anki multiple modes practice pamq
