Will this be open source of some sort so that user can contribute their part to make the software smarter over time so it can design more and more complex part?
Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, this software is not a open source software.
It analyzes the shape of 3D model and give users a suggestion of an AI recommended process, which is processed based on the data accumulated by Nakamura-Tome’s processing experiences.
What is the advantage of this over putting the same model in Mastercam or similar and generating the code from there?
This software is installed to our original control system NT SmartX. Therefore, if users have a machine with NT SmartX, they are able to use it simply, free of charge.
No post processor concerns, way less manual input, no concerns about tool definitions, no mismatch between a mathematically viable toolpath and a machine-viable toolpath, no going back and forth between PC and machine, no trying to keep model/CAM/NC file in sync for future production... I haven't used it (yet) but to me this looks like the kind of thing that is exactly the missing link between print and part in many cases. CAM is great (ish) but there's so many places where things go wrong and you end up making iterative corrections. Putting it on the machine control is, in my opinion, the correct approach. Nice work Nakamura. Compared to a different brand of machine we are currently also running (which is an absolute nightmare), this looks like exactly the right direction for the industry to move in.
