      Okay Phoebe was the one that didn't have no powers seeing into the future it's nothing compared to Peru Piper and Paige they have power Paige and Prue can move objects with their mind Piper could freeze time and blow up things but Phoebe didn't have power
      And writing spells is not a power!! now if they gave her a power that she was an empathy then I will say the 4 of them are very powerful. But the new charmed is better than the original. you don't see the new Charmed Ones fighting with each other you see them work with each other and there's no favor sister on the show The sister who is adopted does not feel left out she's not an outcast. Piper made paige feel like she wasn't part of the family and piper never wanted Paige in the beginning because Paige Matthews was replacing Prue Halliwell and if you ask me if paige was mixed with black the show would have been a little bit more better

    _ When you said that the sisters on the reboot are better than the original (despite the actresses’ horrible acting) just because of their race and not their chemistry as siblings, you already lost your argument.
    _ It took half of season 4 for Paige to be fully recognized as a new and permanent member of the Halliwell family and yet in the reboot, they got along in just 1 episode. If that’s not the definition of “forced”, I don’t know what is.

      I’m not disagreeing. Just stating the fact that you really have no idea what good or bad acting is.
      As someone who has been analyzing acting in films for 15 years, I can assure you that the acting in the original series is much better. Their dynamic and bond as sisters (from those clash over petty issues to ones who have each other’s backs) felt authentic whilst the “chemistry” in the reboot gave me cringe.

      @TheTurnout  Před 4 lety +3

      Hehehe not hearing any facts though. 😂 sounds like opinion, even if it’s an educated opinion.
      Also Macy still wasn’t 100% integrated into the sisterhood until close to the end of Season 2. They were able to operate and work together but their connectedness varies a lot. I feel also that it’s harder to accept a new sister after the death of one, whereas there was no mourning to get over. The mom doesn’t count, and is rather something that was used to push them together. Only through Mel And Maggie could Macy learn more about the mom she never knew. There’s a lot of differences in the setup that lead to outcomes that differ from the original series.

    I tried giving this show a chance but only got into S1 Ep2. If they called this "The United Nations of Witches" then maybe it would have gained merit on its own. But taking on the mantle of the original Charmed was a suicide mission. Shannen, Holly, and Alyssa are not just your ordinary Janes put together in a series. They have substantial acting credentials under their belt even before they came together for the 1998 Charmed tv series. This is why I'm not surprised that S1 Charmed is way far ahead compared to S1 Charmed Reboot when it comes to connecting with the viewers because S1 of the original is all about emotions rather than all about powers.
    Just my two cents. Respect.

  • @leo6278
    @leo6278 Před 4 lety +43

    Well, I get that the reboot may be better in a way. It's modern, the CG is better, and it has the OG as a reference of mistakes to avoid. And yes, the OG was silly, had a lot of plot holes, the storylines were a bit wonky sometimes... But for me, the original Charmed will always be the best. In the OG (let's talk about seasons 1 to 4 and forget the rest lol), I really had the feeling that I was watching sisters. The dynamic that you say is stereotypical actually makes sense in the OG and is explained.
    Also, the concept of being Charmed is different. In the OG, I actually get the feeling that being Charmed is something almost sacred and special. I also liked that they tried to stay close to IRL Wicca in the practice of witchfraft. I really feel that the Halliwell family line streches very far in history, making the Charmed Ones very powerful and legendary witches. It's like, it makes you wanna say "wow." The new show dumped that and made it "Let's cast spells in latin because that's more mysterious" ! And I lost that sense of "sacredness" with the new show. They don't feel as magical, they almost feel fake. It's hard to describe.
    But most importantly, I feel like the original Charmed had a soul. It felt and still feels like home. That's why they still live in their family manor in there late 20s. That's home! I wasn't watching it for the witchcraft, I was watching it for the dynamic between the sisters. In that sense, I think the new Charmed lacks that, and is too focused on witchcraft with CG explosions every five minutes. It's okay if people like that though. I think the reboot is okay. We needed a more diverse cast and the new takes on Charmed are a bowl of fresh air. But the OG will always be the best in the hearts of those who grew up with it !

    • @TheTurnout
      @TheTurnout  Před 4 lety +6

      I think both have a soul. The new one is a reinterpretation of the old, taking the concept into a new direction. Nothing wrong with that. I'll continue to watch both, and won't bother with trying to bash one to justify the other. Cheers!

      @@TheTurnout I started watching Charmed as a 4 year old. I am now 24, almost 25, and my fanatic love for Charmed simply evolved with the times and what is currently relevant. I am an activist like Mel, and so I see the values of this turn in CW Charmed. OG Charmed did this in bread crumbs, but CW Charmed simply took it further and there is something to be learned from each episode that relates to the current generation. I saw myself in Phoebe in Paige for years, and now I am just comfortable in watching a show where I can’t see myself in the characters because of my whiteness, but being bisexual and pagan, I understand the closet/broom closet conversations. And it’s nice that they have representation that doesn’t have to look like me 🙂. Although one thing I really like in the CW Charmed 🆚 OG Charmed is that no one has made blonde 👱🏻‍♀️ jokes in this one.

    2:59 - Honestly this isn't a fair description of the sisters. In the first episode, Prue has a successful career working at Buckland's auction house. Piper works at Quake (I can't remember if she is a chef yet or a manager). Phoebe is returning to SF after a failed stint in NYC, and she quickly becomes a student. Later Prue works a photographer/photo journalist, Piper buys and operates P3, and Phoebe is a majorly successful columnist after she got her degree in psychology
    3:40 - Leo was a combat doctor in WW2, so he is also from the 40s. Honestly I think this is a huge reason to dislike the reboot, they take the same characters and just give them new names, slightly new backgrounds, and new personalities and call it "new." Why make the male whitelighter from the same era as Leo but give him a horrible, stuffy personality with a grating British accent (which I honestly thought was fake until I looked on IMDb just now)?
    4:16 - Yes the original cast was attractive, but am I blind? Because the new cast is also very attractive. Also, Leo's backstory was very fleshed out. He also has entire episodes dedicated to his past, and his life apart from the charmed ones. ALSO If Harry was with their mom at some point, they are just stealing more from Sam's character, who was with Patty.
    5:08 - Technically the original's original "cop friend" was Andy, who did have a relationship with Prue until he died. Darryl was his partner and only became the "cop friend" after Andy died.
    6:15 - In the original show they did deal a lot with the loss of their mother, entire episodes were dedicated to the fact that they never got over their mother's death, and that they still grieve her. If I'm correct I think there is an episode dedicated to each sister's grief over their mom - Prue in the one with the water monster, Piper when she gets married, and Phoebe in the 70s episode. Not to mention, in the first episode they are still dealing with the fall out of Gram's death, it is just more subtle.

    I love the old Charmed. I also grew up watching it. I find the story lines were a bit better the first season of the show did seem dry but it did get better. On the 4th season when Page is introduced it takes almost half the season for them to be close like a family and for her to move in to the house. The new one introduced the sister first time to the family and it takes till the end of the first episode for her to move in and be sisters. The spells and magic seemed true to the Wicca and pagan ways in the original. I am willing to try to watch the second season hoping it gets better. I do wish they kept the whitelighter effect the same maybe gave more of a updated effect with the orbs. I do miss the opening credits but as of now in 2019 on CW which ops out of opening credits and goes for a simple intro.

    It really depends on how you go about it. The original is better if you consider the first 4 seasons because that is the era where the show was at its best. The sister's chemistry, the witchcraft, the family aspect. All of which is completely absent in the later seasons of Charmed. Tbh in Seasons 5-8 the show took a major nosedive where the sisters (namely Piper and Phoebe) became really selfish and hateful characters. The witchcraft began to take a complete backseat, even the characters didn't really seem to care about anything after a while.
    Not to mention the amount of continuity errors in the later seasons, especially Seasons 6 and 8. I'd say factoring in Seasons 1-4 original is better because the reboot's biggest flaw is its lack of flow, bad pacing (it serious feels like multiple seasons have gone by with how many things are thrown around and resolved with little to no follow up) and characters not even being fledged out or identified. There's barely been focus on the sister's relationship and they hardly use the BoS. Not to mention the OG sisters weren't overpowered in their first season.
    In Seasons 1-4 to the show's credit it did bother building up the relationship between Piper, Phoebe and Prue for Seasons 1 & 2, to where by the ending of season 2 you bought them as sisters completely. Even Paige gets her time during the first 13 episodes of season 4 with them introducing her. The girls also used their book a lot and seasons 3 and 4 in particular started to add more witchcraft and potions into the mix. It basically is more structured which the reboot lacks.
    Yes Charmed was always a campy/silly show that you didn't really have to take a lot of elements seriously. However where I think the first 4 seasons were enjoyable in that regard is that the campiness was relatively fun and enjoyable, there were good episodes sprinkled in here and there.
    For characters I'd say the OG sisters win if again factoring in their earlier counterparts. Piper, Phoebe and Prue were all likable in the first 2 seasons (3 for Prue and Piper). Phoebe's character went downhill from season 3-8 and never recovered. Whereas Piper became annoying later seasons as well. But going by their Prue, Piper and Phoebe dynamic, then yeah I would agree with them being better. I'd say the reboot sisters are more likable than the OG sisters in later seasons for sure.
    However I feel Macy really carries the trio in a similar way to where Paige carried the second set of sisters in the OG. Because when it came to later seasons of OG Paige was the only one left doing anything and Macy is the one in the reboot with a consistent focus/arc. Either way I agree with each set of sisters winning.

  • @DavidTorres-uu7nf
    @DavidTorres-uu7nf Před 5 lety +6

    Okay the show is basically using the Charmed name to attract fans. They should’ve just made a new show. They should’ve made three friends who discovered they have magic and come from three coven lines. That would’ve been better than a show that doesn’t follow the same elements of the original show. First the sisters all have a strong bond with each other. I really didn’t get that from the trailer and the few CZcams videos I’ve seen of the show. Second the sisters have distinct characteristics that are not in the reboot. Macy doesn’t seem confident, strong, and stubborn. She isn’t struggling with following her dreams or doing what she wants instead of thinking of her sisters first. Mel isn’t timid, insecure, and the bridge between her sisters. She isn’t the mother hen of her sisters. She isn’t struggling to find confidence in herself. Maggie doesn’t dance to the beat if her own drum. She doesn’t rebel to seek attention. I really feel like they should’ve just made their own show or at least have more elements of the show.
    If I were to have made it, I would’ve made them kill off the oldest sister in the beginning. Then have them find out that the oldest sister had magic and so did they. The death would’ve been used as a sacrifice and the magic from that unbound the sister’s magic. Later they find out that the magic also unbound the magic of an unknown half sister. Mel would start to become less timid as she starts to see life is too short, Maggie would start to try to think first before she acted and Macy would try to find her way through a new family. Like that could’ve had a better start to the show than their mother dying and a random British guy telling them they’re witches.

      I mean, how long has it been since you watched the pilot for the original Charmed. It’s essentially them finding the book of shadows and Phoebe having to convince the other sisters they are witches and even though they are freezing time and throwing things around the room with their minds, they’re like “no, there’s no such thing as witches”. I prefer the traumatic events and their white lighter showing up to explain things personally. But that’s just me. Cheers!

      The Turnout yeah actually after watching this video I went to see the pilot of both and the original wasn’t as good as I remembered it and the new one isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I still stand on my idea that they should’ve made their own show from how different the new Charmed is from the original, but when I saw it without thinking of how different it is from the old show it was actually sort of good. Though I do think they need to work on their pacing, but that’s my issue with a lot of CW shows. Like slowly introducing Harry as their whiter lighter throughout the first few episodes. But that’s just me.

      @isislaz Před 4 lety +2

      Definitely agree with you on the part that they should've just made their own show. The main thing imo that makes the original better is that they stuck with the theme of the show being abt 3 sisters who happen to be witches. And along with that, they had the writers research the actual Wiccan religion and culture and would incorporate their findings into the show, which is not what the reboot does. The reboot is just all over the place and I really tried to watch it and get into it but I couldn't. And it's even more difficult to grasp when they disassociated the show from the original characters. This is why fans of the original wanted a spinoff show based around Chris and Wyatt.

      @heathergraham2581 Před 4 lety +1

      @@TheTurnout Actually, the sisters in the OG were using their powers without realizing they were doing so after Phoebe read the incantation which makes it believable to me. They had no concept about nor any memories of witchcraft. Their emotions triggered their powers, Prue with her sleazy boss, Piper's anxiousness with her job interview etc. (ie. She froze the chef at the restaurant by accident and then tried to get in touch with Phoebe by pay phone). Phoebe needed to convince them because they didn't believe in any of it nor that what happened was due to some magical destiny. They were thinking "logically" which is what most "normal" people tend to do until their own reality sets in. I found the reboot more UNrealistic regarding their introduction as witches (ie. being tied up by their whiteligher Harry LOL) and barely knowing Macy yet an instantaneous sister bond is formed by the end of the first episode? Nope. That didn't even happen with Paige and the original even highlighted how the first 3 sisters had family struggles, drifted apart after the death of their Grams, with Prue & Phoebe even sharing a sibling rift. We saw how gaining their powers & becoming the Charmed Ones brought them closer together. I found all these circumstances more realistic & the build up more impactful in my opinion.

    While I completely disagree with your opinion that the new show is better at all, the new show isn't as terrible as I expected.
    The dynamic between the Sisters aswell as their characters however are roughly the same, as far as fleshed out characters and not "just their age". You're really not using the same standards for both and Phoebe also had that same power FYI only that they removed it because it was a too powerfull plot device. Them having the Hispanic Background means nothing if you cast 2 african american and one hispanic Woman who could pass as being african american, furthermore how does their race further any plot about Witchcraft?
    To be fair what I preferred about the new show was the way they setup them getting their powers. That they showed the mother, that the Sisters seemed young enough to still live in that house and that their Whiteligther actually gave them an introduction.
    But apart from that it's really not better in any aspect, I bet that they'll also have one of the Sisters date the Whitelighter and so on. The Difference here is that Charmed was a 90's show like 90210 mixed with Witchcraft/Monster of the Week, while the new Charmed is more of an Desperate Housewives instead.
    The new Charmed is better than I had feared but it's most certainly not better or even as good as the original. But who knows maybe they'll become better, the main reason why the original Charmed went down the drain was because of budget cuts that among other things forced them to stick to humanoid enemies and minimize production costs

      How is the reboot trying to be politically correct? By having diverse characters? In what world is that a bad thing? Also, you can’t say the charmed reboot is riding the original’s bandwagon. They had some interesting callbacks and the powers were essentially the same, but all and all this is a different show almost entirely. The problem here is that if they made it any more different people would have said “then why even call it charmed” and if it were closer to the original, they’d say “why even have a reboot of it’s exactly the same”. There are big differences between the two shows and it’s okay to have a preference. I like both personally, though the original doesn’t really hold up to me. Cool review!
    I actually agree with many of your points, but you only have seen few episodes.. there r more to see before you can reach your conclusion.. I already finished the 1st season of CW Charmed
    I love the old Charmed, and I dig the new one
    But there r things that you have yet to see, and here is my opinion to point out some of your points :
    1. The supporting actor for whitelighter (Harry) is more fleshed out than old Leo I agree, but the actor and character who replaced half-demon lover Cole/Belthazor is a paper-thin character as human, his name is Parker and he is basically a basic "reformed bad boy" right from the start which makes him far less interesting, and he lacks personality on his own, he is just a lover boy who changed his loyalty for a girl he barely know in a blink for the sake of romantic plot
    Although his demon CGI form is very cool and awesome!
    His character is very similar to another character in another witch TV show Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Nicholas Scratch.. which happens to be similar to every "reformed bad boy trope"
    2. Niko supposedly replaced Andy, who is Prue's love interest, not Daryl
    But the actress who play Niko fails to convince me that she is in love with Mel I can't root for them despite watching for the whole season, because the characters lack chemistry with each other
    Jada is far more interesting
    3. Mel is very unlikable, unlike Piper.. partly due to forced "woke" and feminism, and also because the showrunner decide to make the feminist main character is a basic men-hater lesbian.. you don't need to hate men or be a lesbian to be a feminist, and the fact that Mel's character is written as having no attraction to male species due to her sexuality and she is basically a misandrist kinda took away the feminist strength featured in the the original show
    4. This show's casts is diverse, and I love how the show deal with ethnicity issue with Maggie and Macy.. plus point for the show
    But bear in mind pretty much every other show during OG Charmed's era had mostly white characters or popular TV show with mostly black characters.. time has changed now but we can't blame OG Charmed for featuring mostly white protagonists it was the (rather upsetting) trend at that era
    5. The format of TV show also has changed today.. as people tend to binge-watch we prefer straight to the point storyline.. but the "villain of the day" story is the basic TV format at that era of OG charmed too.. I think OG Charmed works best at that time where the characters and their sisterhood fleshed out during this episodes.. the "filler episodes" actually bring the audience closer to the characters.. this is similarly how I feel about OG Sailormoon in the 90's vs Sailormoon Crystal new adaptation.. the new Sailormoon series has better execution, but the relationship and the personality of each characters are not fully optimized due to lack of character-focused episode, like in this new Charmed
    6. This sounds really shallow but the OG Charmed are far prettier overall, but I get today we prefer more representation from every kind of person that reflects the real population.. though I wonder why they didn't make one of the sister in the new show plus-sized too
    I kinda upset with Mel's casting tho, she looks way too old to be the middle sister.. I googled her and found out the actress Melonie Diaz is like 7 years older that her "older sister" Macy.. they should at least appropriately cast according to age
    I know that Alyssa Milano is one year older than Holly Marie Combs.. but she did pass playing Phoebe the youngest sister based on her looks and her believable acting.. overall all the older Charmed main casts are appropriately cast which I really love
    But I think Mel, Niko and Parker are miscast in this new show

    • @leedongwok86
      @leedongwok86 Před 5 lety +4

      7. Also the "Elders" in this new show is basically straight up humans.. they lack mysteries and basically quite powerless and useless.. what the heck
      the Elders is one of the main weakness of this new Charmed plot

      @TheTurnout  Před 5 lety +4

      Yeah they changed a lot of stuff but I argue that they needed to. If it was too similar, people would be mad about that. lol.

    After watching the first season of the reboot and actively watching the second season of the reboot now the “OG Charmed” is the better of the series.
    Season 1-4 of the OG Charmed were the best seasons of the series for me. The dynamic between Prue Piper & Phoebe and even Paige’s introduction, the writing, the character development (except Phoebe who fell victim to the relationship trope of needing a man to be interesting in Season 3 and beyond) the magic, the family history, the world building was all done realistically, gradually, and we felt like we were growing with the sisters in their lives, dreams, aspirations, and not just watching a show to pass the time. It felt more grounded/believable in that aspect and the magic/demon of the week was just the icing on the cake.
    The first season of this reboot was poorly rushed, too much was going on, the girls barely relied on the Book of Shadows and everything was handed/explained to them, they advanced with their abilities way too quickly (especially Maggie), their “sisterly bond” was not and still not believable, we still do not know anything about these girls or their family’s history with magic, the writing could be better and literally Holly Marie Comb’s acting in “Hell Hath No Fury” in Season 4x13 is more emotion than I’ve seen from these new girls in these two and half seasons of this reboot thus far lol
    I will give credit to the reboot for dabbling with the ideologies of expanding on the “gray area” of the moral compass. The OG Charmed just focused on the good and evil but sometimes it’s not always that clear.
    I’m not gonna harp on the CGI or effects. The OG Charmed was practical and used what they got and this reboot I’m impartial with the use of it but it’s apparent this reboot is drawing inspiration from various other sources of magic (Harry’s teleporting is Harry Potter ish, the first demon the Reboot Charmed zones vanquished looked like the Night King from GoT etc.).
    When the Reboot Charmed Ones get better with their sisterly dynamic/chemistry, the writing/direction of the show finds some kind of ground to build up from and properly world build, we learn more about their pasts which is passed off as just useless background knowledge and not as important which is boring, and we organically watch these girls grow in a well rounded way THEN I can see it being a better Charmed.
    Checking off boxes (Having POC leads, an LGBT representation, Feminist, Millennial terminology, social issues etc.) to have in a show doesn’t automatically mean the show will be spectacular.

    I dont like the reboot. I watched the first few episodes and I couldnt watch anymore. It feels too quick and too forced. The fact that the sisters are of different races, I think, should not be a factor for how the series is better. As long as the actresses can bring their character to life and make you feel for them, that is what should count. This show did not make me like any of the sisters. Their emotions dont feel real in the show. The twist with their whitelighter was an interesting change that has potential, but I do not like how he was introduced. In my opinion, he was trusted too early. And this whole science thing is cool with the witch craft, but again it feels too forced and too stupid. They beat an enemy with baking soda. In the original series it was not that easy. It wouldnt just take one substance to kill an enemy. Now if they had made a chemical using more than one thing like potion making, then it would make more sense. There are a lot of missed opportunities they could have done. They could have made the series more modern without taking out traditional witch craft lore. The original will always be better in my opinion when compared to this reboot. The original has its own cons as a show, but is overall a show that many generations can enjoy for years to come.

So it makes sense for the reboot sister to do more Santeria, voodoo, brujeria and other African, Caribbean and Latin magic.

They didn't even give those girls time to grow into their powers. And it doesn't even seem like the writers explored the actual Wiccan/Wicca religion like the original writers did. Not once in the few episodes I watched did they imply the rule abt using magic for personal gain. The sisterhood wasn't forced in the original and they gave its audience time to get familiar with the sisters and their stories which then started to include fighting evil demons and warlocks. This new shit they did ain't it.

You kind of feel it with Mel and Maggie and eventually with Macy and Maggie but Mel and Macy have no emotional connection at all which throws the whole dynamic out the window lol. And they actually did talk about personal gain in the Halloween episode. And I think the reason why they didn’t add the 24 hour window in this reboot was because they were trying to stray away from the Wiccan aspect and explore other magically mythos from different cultures. I was actually surprised and glad they added some Yoruba and Santeria in it although it wasn’t much. I also didn’t like the new power boost they got every five minutes lol. That was rushed too.

      @@TheTurnout Yes it is my opinion, but then by the start of season 3 of original Charmed, the tv show was having a profound effect on tv viewers. The original Charmed had created a culture, a trend that still lives on today. People still binge watch the series. Aaron Spelling did the research on Wiccans, Lores, Mythology, and legends. Characters were or evolved into 3D personas. The "reboot" is really a revamp, that is as dry and 2 dimensional as the paper the script is written on. The show can't even garner a decent share of the 21 and under female viewer market, which it seems the show is trying to reach out to....The only reason this show is still around is because it shares the title of the original Charmed series. That is the only reason YOU even started watching it.
      Anyone who decently watched the Original Charmed series knows Prue had telekinesis, with the ability to also mind blast a person into the next room. She also developed astral projection. Piper could freeze time and evolved into being able to blow people/objects up. Phoebe had Premonition, evolved into being able to levitate and also empathic abilities. Paige due to some inherited white lighter, could orb, orb objects, heal, and limited ability in changing appearances. From the reviews and short videos I've seen with the reboot, it seems the motivation part has gone way over the top. Two sisters who grew up together embrace a new half-sister without hesitation and turn to a life of magic then goes on to become an upgraded version of students in Hogwarts. Then they turn into Dragon Ball Z witches with their power level increasing in a short period of time, and then goes on to become Xena warrior witches before the first season ends. Rusty Shields I’ll give you an example very close to home. I’m am a very very black man, but my great-great-grandfather was a blue-eyed white man from Finland (and probably the only white ancestor in my entire bloodline, with the rest being black only). But, that drop of white blood in my bloodline caused all of us (his descendants) to be carriers of European genes, some expressing them while some don’t. I was born with dark skin, deep brown eyes, kinky hair (your typical black man), but my wife is a white Irish lady with blue eyes and guess what, our child is as white skinned, blue-eyed blond girl. The blue eyes gene is a recessive gene, meaning for it to be expressed in an individual, they must have inherited it from both parents and not just one. I passed on my blue-eyed gene (inherited from my Finnish ancestor, through my father) to my daughter, and she inherited the other half from my wife.
      What I’m trying to say here is that my daughter is a blue-eyed, wavy blond White girl, with my black blood in her veins. But she is my child, my biological child. Genes work in mysterious ways and that would have been the case with Maggie and her black father.
