We’re back at the famous Sunset Sound with Mr. Darrell Thorp! Darrell will be recording Steve Maggiora (who you’ve seen on the channel previously) on vocals & keys live, with David Piltch on standup bass, Justin Norman on guitar and of course the wonderful Blair Sinta on drums.
We used Darrell’s personal collection of mics, which are all Lauten Audio! We recorded everyone individually with the whole band playing live and then we recorded a full take using just ONE mic!
The best part about doing all of this is that you CAN DOWNLOAD ALL OF THESE TRACKS, get a breakdown of how it was recorded, listen to Darrell’s engineering, mix the multitracks yourself and hear the difference between the one mic and and all of the individual micing.

Hi Friends, this was so much fun to do! Darrell Thorp, producer, mixer, recording engineer, and seven-time Grammy-winner recording our friend Steve Maggiora with an amazing band consisting of David Piltch on Bass, Blair Sinta on drums and Justin Norman guitar at Sunset Sound using all Lauten Audio Mics! PLUS You can download ALL of the files! There are two sessions, one multi mic'd and one with just one mic recording the whole band live!!
Thank you everyone involved such a beautiful video!
Thanks ever so much Darlene!
These cats are great musicians and that singer wow forgetta bout it. A true Lauten audio video that shows how amazing they really are, I’ve had my Lauten LA-320 for about 6 months and it’s a masterpiece, Thanks Warren you are what makes CZcams cool.
Thank you Ronnie! - You rock my friend!
In my opinion its the best recording vocal ive heard. It was a pleasure to mix it. And the song is amazing.
That's amazing to hear Jorge!
This song is beautiful.. And the stick definition on that ride is incredible! Blair is the man!
Thanks ever so much Daily Drum Lesson! Yes, Blair Rocks!
Wood tip stick I am guessing on the ride cymbal. As you said it is great sounding.
Amazing technique.⚡️
Session players all. They make everything sound like the next hit. It isn't the song, it is the musicianship. I have tears in my eyes over this den of masters. Notice how no matter the mic, they sound recordable and clean with very little volume issues and undetectable mises. A couple of good recoveries. Just excellent work folks.
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it
Steve Maggiora is off the chains he should be famous! like really famous ! what a great line-up..... my friend loan me his Lauten 386 - to tray out, I can't wait to dig into it... this thing is built like a tank... way to go Warren - another great video...
Agreed 100%! Steve is amazing!
Blair is SO balanced it's insane. Later you see him smiling and opening up the groove, adding vibe.
Agreed! An amazing drummer!
Hey Warren, thanks so much for this. It’s an absolute shame more music and musicians like this aren’t on everyone’s radar and heard on an even larger scale. I’ve been producing/engineering for 32 years now and teaching music production and recording classes at a variety of college institutions for that same time, and sadly most of my current students seem only consumed with hip hop and EDM production. Each year it seems fewer students want to learn traditional recording methods, miking techniques, and capturing “real musicians” playing acoustic instruments with heart and soul. Keep up the good work of spreading awareness for all genres.
Thanks ever so much Chuck! That is very kind of you to say! Yes, agreed, amazing musicians, amazing engineer, studio and of course Microphones!
What a voice, what a band, what a studio, what a great time
Thanks ever so much Daniel!
So I checked out Lauten on Sweetwater. The LA-320 is $499. SW says the high pass is at 120hz and the low pass at 12khz. What a wonderful entry for a small studio for a tube mic! I'll consider the LA-120 pair at $350 as well. I won't need the LA-220 because I already have a GT-57.
This is going to be my next CD purchase. Damn they're good. "Yeah baby."
Yes Loren! I'm very impressed! Thanks for the marvellous comment!
sweetwater has the LA120s for an amazing 299 right now
I was gifted a Lauten Eden from a client and it's now my go to for Vox and works great for just about anything. It's heavy!
Dan De La Isla that’s fantastic to hear!!
Thank you for the multitrack, Mr. Huart!
No problem Сергей! - Have a marvellous time mixing!
Audio-technica headphones. Amazing, I bay ATH-M40X, yesterday.Amazing monitors. What i hear in monitor speaker, that is what i hear in my headphones. Amazing balanse. I am very happy.
Great stuff!!
Thanks Produce Like A Pro, what a great video! Fantastic musicians and engineer in an iconic studio, what’s not to love? Darrell really knows his stuff!
If live music sounded like this every time, I would never miss a live show anywhere. But most people can't even sing these days let alone keep in the pocket. These guys killed a basic song and treated it like gold.
Brilliant Video Warren...It's great we have an ambassador from the UK keeping things real in this crazy world we live in! Xxx
AW shucks thanks ever so much my friend! You Rock!!
Thank you everyone involved such a beautiful video!
Thanks ever s much Darlene! You Rock!
Wow, what a great song! You guys are amazing, thanks a lot for letting us join the session!
Bernd Holder thanks ever so much!!
Warren... I actually came here because I saw a Sweetwater interview with Darrell, and thought he was a cool guy. Thanks so much for this content. I actually just got an LA-320 and I'm in the process of learning it's nuances on different sources. So seeing this video was even more powerful for me. I can't imagine how cool it would be to be surrounded by talented musicians on a "daily" basis. Being in studio with this type of stuff must be simply incredible. Thanks again!
Man.. Justin Norman is killing it on the guitar! And that tone...freaking insane!
Yes, agreed! Justin did an amazing job!
Perfect session! Wish I could have been there. Those are the moments we live for. But... at least we got the Multitracks. This and the Jonah Smith session at Sunset Sound are the best sessions I've ever had the pleasure of working on. And all thanks to Warren and Produce Like A Pro! THANK YOU =)
Wow! Thanks Sam! Next time you have to be here my friend! Would be great to have you here!
Ooh what about a giveaway: a trip to Sunset Sound to assist on a tracking day! I'd certainly make coffee and run cables for everyone just to be there!
Haha great idea with an amazing Engineer Roy!!
Ha ha I'm full of good ideas! Cheers Warren, appreciate your replies and discussions!
You're very welcome Roy!

Blair Sinta... I don't even have words. Such a freaking stellar musician. I'm gonna go practice more lol. After I download these multitracks of course.
Rob Bay yes! Blair is incredible!!
Love Steve’s voice! Great video. Well done
Thank for the high quality multitracks!!!
You're very welcome M-Mixing! Happy mixing!
Class, all the way through from Producing, tracking and musicianship. No more words needed.
Philfy Phil thanks ever so much my friend!
The level of musicianship and recording quality on this Lauten Audio demo video are absolutely world class. I’ve listened twice in my Beyerdynamic cans and once in my Sonys - the detail and honesty of the sound are astounding. I’m convinced-I’m gonna buy a pair of LA120s for starters.
Wow! Thanks ever so much
Outstanding musicians
Agreed 100% John! You Rock my friend!
Thanks so much for sharing the multitracks! Wow that chamber sounds awesome!

Thanks ever so much Alexey!!
BLAST OFF! That was awesome! How crisp everything was and that beautiful reverb. Superb mikes and recording, even on the laptop. And man, Steve is Leon Russell reborn! I thought it was his song (needs a little more southern drawl, though). Great song and recording! Each sound was so crisp and clean - that cymbal sound-wow. Couldn't get much of the ass on my laptop, though. Loved it!
KimboH55 I agree!! Darrell did an amazing job!! The players were great! Mics are amazing! Great song and amazing Studio!
Loved this! What a great testimony of live play in the studio! I want to get me one of those mics!
Thanks ever so much Scott! I really appreciate it! Agreed 100%! Great song, great musicians, great mics, great stood and great engineer! Perfect combination!
Amazing voice, great post!
im215exempt thanks ever so much!
Started listening to the mics, soon just listening to the song!
The song is incredible. It kind of got a eagles feel to it to me and his voice is kind of like Marc Broussards. All great things.
Yes Lee! The song is great! Did you get the multitracks!?
Very cool. Inspiring!
Hi Ryan, thank you my friend!
"But I can't control my brain" favorite line in the song...
Haha yes indeed!!
First time hearing Lauten mics and they're great! Now on my radar for future mic collection! And if Darrell likes them then you know they're great mics!
Thanks Eric!! You Rock!
Everything sounds awesome
Hi Rene, thanks ever so much!
Beautiful song, Very inspiring in th morning!
Thanks ever so much Ricardo!!
Good God that guy can sing!!
Sweet!
Thanks Ken!!
Thanks!
Hi Petr, thank you!
Really excellent performances! I would have loved to have been there but you already had a singer😀 with so much soul in his voice. A really flawless performance from everyone. Hats off. I was enjoying it. And.. what a way to hear the 357’s capability with such great singing! Fantastic! I’m receiving mine this week via Sweetwater. A big thank you to everyone involved. Top to bottom set up, performance, mixing filming, engineer…. sounded great.✊🏼✨⚡️⚡️🔥
very interesting, on the room mics sounded like the 87 was a bit crisper than the 86, thanks warren and darrell
Hi John, thanks ever so much!
Great video! Awesome job!
Thanks Eric You Rock!
bloody great
Thanks ever so much!!
Excellent!
Thanks ever so much Audrey!
This is great work and just goes to show that arrangement and musicians' performance along with instrument sound and room sound are the key starting point, the room Mic version sounded fantastic! Then add correct Mic choice and placement and a nice mix to that and you have nothing short of amazing. Another marvellous video, a credit to all involved
Thanks ever so much Roy! I really appreciate your very kind words my friend! Agreed, wonderful musicians, amazing engineer and marvellous mics!
The band was great 😀
Thanks ever so much Boris! Yes, wonderful musicians!
Didn't know Seth Rogen had such a great singing voice. But seriously, awesome song. It sounds big and warm.
Haha I'm sure he's never heard that before? Haha Yes, amazing song!!
I've just done a HUGE amount of research online and apparently this is what's known as REAL musicians, playing TOGETHER, on REAL instruments at - wait for it.... the SAME time. Man, just imagine if that catches on... Here's hoping...
Haha yes, indeed!! Thanks for the great comment!!
Great video and a wonderful performance of a great song. Steve is such a talent! I was also happy to see the Lauten mics on show. I just took delivery of an LA-320 the other day (on your recommendation from another video) and it's great! I don't have a grand piano lying around but so far on my voice and on acoustic guitar it is very full and detailed. Tomorrow I just might try as a front of kit or mono overhead to see how it sounds.
Hi Terry, thanks as ever for your amazing support my friend! Agreed, Steve is such an amazing talent! What a band too! Yes, the mono overhead can be amazing!
Very good video.... can't find a test review for the Lauten LS-208.
Man, I wish I could sing like that.
Hi Gabe, yes, Steve is amazing!
Very Cool
Thanks very much!!
Really interresting, Darrell seems awesome! You looked like a kid at the candy store!
Wow! Thanks ever so much Thomas! Agreed, I was!!
Sunset!!!
Yes urltom!!! haha
Studio One!!
That Atlantis is just a monster mic! And the shopping list gets longer...
Aha! Sorry! That's the reality of discovering great equipment isn't it!
I don't know who to credit but the kick and especially the upright are coming through on my M1 Mac speakers perfectly balanced with the rest of the track. Either way its great to know I can mix and master with nothing but my Mac speaks and a full complement of these Lauten mics. 😉
Fantastic! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
as of this post Sweetwater has the LA120s for $299 for the pair!!! I got mine coming tomorrow!
Marvellous!
Imagine Jim Morrrison singing in that vocal room "People Are Strange"
That's enough to give someone goosebumps! - It's really amazing to be able to record in a space where so much history was made.
Far out!
: )
Thanks Lisa! Yes! Far out!
Sir... Plz make a video on peak vs RMS compression... And how to use them differently in different situations. .... You are the best guru ...!!!!!!😊😊
Thanks ever so much! Great idea!
I'd love to have one of these. Having used My Rhode NT1A as my only Condenser Mic for years, I'm feeling kind of sad. 😒😊.
Thanks for the awesome video and performance! Is there a mixing part available somewhere?
That was the mix! We didn't 'mix' the song again! He printed it as you heard with some real time volume rides, on the console!
Ok, thanks for the clarification. The result is quite impressive!!
iGoToEleven11 thanks ever so much! Glad to be able help!
Great Video. Always learning a lot. Warren, could you please make a Video About mixing woodwinds like Saxophone and brass? Nobody is Talking 'bout that ;D
Thanks ever so much Penny! Yes, that's a great topic!
Great song and great performance! Can I ask how the blues junior was set up?
Thanks Warren fantastic video as always.
Marvellous question Brendan! That's a good question for Justin! Justin?
Produce Like A Pro All in the fingers???
More than likely my friend!
Great video.
Instead of a +10 and -10 pad on the Atlantis, why not put a -10 and -20?
Maybe my friend! Depends on the sound sources.
what mic stands this guy is using please ??
Hi Warren!! Nice video! Hope you make a video like this..or maybe like Joe Gilder with his Mixing together session..have a marvelous day!
Hi Ardian! Yes, I love doing these! Was a lot of fun!
Does anyone know what the pres are? I’m a noob so. I see the console has the api eq? So does this make it and api console w api pres?
Hey Warren, so this is only eq and compression to print as Darrell showed us? No post production at all? Damn nice sound if so. A few things I don't appreciate so much but piano sounds great, the double bass sounds lovely and very consistent in frequencies without those annoying bumps on some notes (must be very difficult? maybe a very good bass as well? and player off course), would be nice to have a bit more string buzz... Vocal sounds open and nice but that chamber makes the sibilants annoying. Would be nice hearing a more dry intimate vocal. : )
(About mono OH, personally found it a bit weird sounding with the ride in center but toms so widely panned...)
All exactly as you heard! No other mixing was done! That's straight off the desk at Sunset Sound!
Bloody marvelous : ) Makes the mixing engineer almost superfluous.
Agreed! Record it great!!
I got to be a fly on the wall with David Piltch playing bass. That's how his bass sounds. He doesn't do the string buzz thing. More of the tubby gut string thing. He's a beast.
A bit late for this question, but we can use these multitracks in a portfolio?
Yes, you can!!
Hey Warren, Is the Chic-Fil-A across the road open yet? I was there at Sunset couple months ago and looking for a meal and they weren't open yet. Good chicken sandwich oh yeah cool video too under $500 for a tube mic/ sweet
I'm not sure? I always eat at Ro Ro's Chicken next door! Which is AMAZING!!
actually emded up at the Subway I'll have to try Ro Ro's next time, thanks so much that was an impressive video and excellent sounds
HI Ben, yes, you should definitely try Ro Ro's! It's a wonderful place!
What is the title of the song?
Great performance. You're friend Steve can sing like a boss.
As a favor, you can get him to do vocals on the Metal track I keep asking you to make heh heh.
Haha yes, one day Blake!
Can someone identify the hh and ride cymbals he is uning?
Only bummed out by the mono overhead.
I loved the Mono overhead!
Produce Like A Pro I must admit that I posted that before I heard it in the mix. Just from personal experience I’ve never liked it on my projects. I usually mic the center overhead but I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve actually used it. How heavily do you rely on it Warren?
HI Lee, I hear you! In a perfect world (usually at Sunset!) I run three overheads and then choose the blend. However, many amazing guys use just one Mono overhead and get incredible results!
So this is Darrell, who is *cough* mentioned *cough* at the end of Concrete and Gold.
Haha who knows?
It’s that verb that just blends it all together…. That’s a real pain because that’s by far the most expensive thing in the chain lol… doesn’t hurt to have excellent musicians either… and it’s nice to see the entire band track together, that’s what you definitely find lacking in most recordings. Funny how such a simple thing makes that much difference, yet hardly anyone does it anymore…
@12:56 API!!!
