    I spent a lot of time at the original Larrabee Sounds back in the 70s. What a different vibe. That place was relatively small, humble and homey, a family run business, all tape, of course. The sounds that came out of there were freaking amazing. The new place looks like Sonic Disneyland. What an amazing place it must be to work.

    As a 30 year construction contactor, I have remodeled a lot of spaces, but the room at 10:51 was intriguing due to natural light. I know Architects, I majored in Architecture, and someone deserves a compliment on that space, the soft colors, the natural feel. The others spaces are truly elaborate and impressive. Yes, I do enjoy recording, and I searched for Jimmy Douglass when I found this, that guy always makes me smile. Wonderful people, deserved successes. Thanks! -Jim

    I can say that I was fortunate to have worked at Larrabee in the late 80’s when I produced an artist signed to Island Records and mixed her LP with Engineer Alan Meyerson, being from the east coast and working at the top studios in NYC, Larrabee was totally different and a great experience! Can’t wait to work there again

    I love Engineering..but my biggest thought at this time is : experienced personalities love the SSL series of desks, but my tutors also speak of Neve, what does SSL do so well that Neve doesn’t?
    I spent as much tome on the duality at school as I could but with more knowledge now there are a lot of advanced ways I’d do things differently..love to everyone in Engineering 👍🏽

      Please elaborate.

    • @AnodyneHipsterInfluencer
      @AnodyneHipsterInfluencer Před 3 lety +3

      It's what Neve does well that SSL doesn't; TONE. SSL may, in some cases - especially in more modern, big studio situations. (Especially today where you're getting handed a Pro Tools session with fkn 500 tracks) - provide a few more bells and whistles in terms of signal flow, mix busses, sub groups. Again, can be EASIER when mixing a producer/engineer's Pro Tools session with 6 snare tracks, 8 kick tracks, 10 keyboard tracks etc. So I think (again, this is all just my opinion) alot of mixers like the SSL's for that reason. They don't have to think so much in how to handle signal flow. What you lose (again, in my but also many others opinion) is the absolutely incredible sound of Rupert Neve's incredible preamps and EQ's. It certainly isn't a transparent thing but it colors everything in a really fantastic way. When you drive the preamps, it never sounds harsh, it just sounds incredible. On so many classic recordings, musicians have run instruments like guitars, keyboards etc directly into the board and just to use just the Neve preamp to get some really incredible sounds. There have been countless pieces of gear and plugins designed to emulate just that; running directly into a Neve console/preamp. API is a similar story. Alot of mixers/engineers get the best of both worlds in using Neve/Neve style outboard preamps and EQ's into the SSL.
      Although, I preface this by saying alot of guys who've primarily worked on SSL's will likely say they enjoy the sound of an SSL preamp, overdriven or not. For my money, there is nothing like the sound of Neve compression, preamps, EQ.

    Places like this are museums. Most things are done in small studios where most everything is done in the box. When 20k CD's sold get you into the top 100, very few artists are given budgets to work in places like these. But great consoles are needed for the huge touring business that keep bands touring endlessly.

      Exactly if you're planning on pumping your songs out of stadium speakers you better have it mastered on an analog console are every bad pitch in you're song will get exposed. Which is why any artists signed to Roc Nation for instance will have their music mixed here.

    i've always felt SSL pre's from the outset couldn't get remotely close to 1063 pre's; maybe that's by design, but to me they're too shrill and sterile. Listening to recordings made on Neve, FocusRite, Trident & Helios has always been a more pleasing experience than those on SSL. This studio has certainly "put all their eggs in one basket"; they'd be better off offering at least one Neve alternative IMHO...
