I am Chinese from hainan island, and this is actually what I grew up eating, almost everyday
I was in Iceland a few years ago and ate this soup almost every day I could. I just made this recipe tonight and it was great! Thank you from North Dakota!
I just traveled in Iceland days ago. I didn't expect icelandic food is actually pretty good, not like other Nordic countries😂. The soup tastes surprisingly similar to what I had in my hometown, a town in Northwestern China. I will definitely try this recipe.
winter 2023 in Australia. Made this delicious soup yesterday. (29/6/2023} Have enjoyed a couple of bowls of this soup over last two days. Lovely winter fare!
I can't afford nor find lamb shoulder where I live so instead I used pork shoulder/bones. Everything else I kept the same. The soup came out pretty good! I would imagine the taste would be completely different using lamb. Thank you for all your icelandic food recipes! I hope I could make most of them soon as this is the closest I can get to Iceland from home short of visiting your beautiful country.
The reason our soup has lamb is because lamb is available. It makes perfect sense to use what is available to you. But yes, the flavour will be different. You'll taste the difference once you visit!
I cannot find lamb shoulder nor neck meat where I live, either. I have substituted 2 shanks and about 1/2 to 3/4 lb. of leg meat together. It works fine. I use a little hand saw to cut the shank bones into 2 pieces. I only use salt and pepper to season. Just made it yesterday.
One of the greatest soups on the planet!
One of my favorite Icelandic dishes. Thanks for sharing...
I myself am from iceland and I love this, I remember being at my grandparents and they make this it always makes me happy 😋
It may be the climate, or maybe the "cultural exchange" that happened from 795 AD when your forebears invaded Scotland, but our Scotch Broth is very similar. We tend to add pearl barley rather than your usual rice. Brilliant soup, I was brought up on Scotch Broth, our family would usually have it with two of our meals a day, six days a week. A good, inexpensive way to feed a growing family & a great way to get vegetables into children who are picky eaters. I love to add some parsnips when I make kjötsúpa or Scotch broth, their sweetness goes with the lamb/hogget/mutton so well.
this is very similar like beef soup and i found this amazing channel for how to cook Icelandic food
Greetings from Indonesia!
Thank you for this reciepes. I'm from Thailand and while we think most European's food are a bit bland to our tastebud, Icelandic lamb soup it's truly delicious. Frankly I find it's also goes well with rice too(we actually eat everything with rice :D). When I visit Iceland I always ordered this anytime I could. And now I can make them myself at home to remind me of it.
It really is our pleasure! We didn't do this particular recipe, but people often add a handful or so of rice to the soup to make it more substantial.
If you ever make a Thai-inspired Kjotsupa, we would LOVE to hear about it! :)
Same ingredients, we put some paprika and some tomatoes there.... it is called Kashmir In Kazakhstan
Ah, I'd love to try that version!
We went of a school trip to iceland and I didn't want to spend a lot of money so I bought a thermos and at most stops we went to they sold Kjotsupa which came out to about £5 for one litre of the stuff - which kept me going on sightseeing and glacier climbing.
That is a TOP tip! We'll be sure to remember that on our own outings!
I'm make this tonight for dinner
it's basically Scotch Broth without the oats an barley. had it when i was in Iceland, very tasty
You're a scotch broth!
* *James Arrol,* *
*YOU'RE* a Scotch broth!
A lot of people actually put barley or rice in as well
Great dishes, please more, more cuisine from Island.
Thanks, Valur. We won't rest on our laurels until we make them all.
Looks yummy. I live in Australia where lamb is readily available. Probably wont be making this tasty soup till our winter I'll be checking out more Icelandic recipes. Thanks..🙃
Brilliant! It's a true winter soup, really! Well, we have it all year round... but our summers are unfortunately not that warm! ;)
Iceland nice country beautiful experienced and the soup looks good i already cook the plokkfiskur, i like it delicious
i wish i could chop vegetables so fast
Fantastic video, fantastic channel
Stay tuned. There will be more!
One of my favs, thanks for the recipe!
Great video! This looks like a delicious recipe that I can't wait to make. Also, you have an awesome voice dude. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! Let us know how it worked out for you - you can also tag us on Instagram if you like! :)
Thank you for sharing this recipe! Most Kjotsupa recipes I find on here are different with an American chef which leads me to believe they are not authentic. Some didn't even add swede and they added extra stuff like garlic. I trust a real Icelander to learn from haha. I've been falling in love with Icelandic food and culture and want to learn how to make all the things! I'm very excited to make this for dinner tonight.
How did it go? :D
@@IcelandFoodCentre Delicious! It's now my boyfriend's favorite soup. I've made it twice now since. 😄 I hope you make more videos for your channel because I cannot get enough of Iceland taste. I want to learn more 🤩
We have same soup in Turkey and we don't call it Turkish lamb Soup but Haşlama :)
A quick image search... wow looks identical!
Looks yummy! By the way, the næpa - that you called a swede and a rutabaga, I personally would've called a turnip. Apparently you can get "white turnips" as well. And I understand some folk call turnips "neeps," too. Also, I was hoping you might put some kohlrabi in the soup? You know, hnúðkál. Still, I've never made it or eaten it before, so what do I know...
We use rófa/rutabaga, not næpa/turnip. Slight difference but, hey it's all family. Hnúðkál sounds like STD.
I remember the No Reservations episode where Anthony Bourdain went to Iceland. He tried this at a gym with a group of Icelandic strongmen. Those guys ate several bowls of this in a row.
:D I can't believe I haven't seen that one! Anthony Bourdain was the GOAT. But I can certainly belive they had several bowls... Even us regular people keep going back for seconds and thirds!
@@IcelandFoodCentre I have a question about thís recipe. One of my friends is allergic to onions, so is there a substitute vegetable I can use instead? Like, say, a leek?
@@1987MartinT If they're allergic to Onions then they're likely to be allergic to Leek, which is a type of onion I think. I'd suggest asking themselves what onion substitute they use and if there's anything they might suggest.
You might be able to consider using thinly sliced Celery, perhaps one stalk should do it.
Best of luck! :)
@@MrSindriSvan Thanks.
Looks so cozy and yummy!
Trust us, it is!
Looking for a video to make Rulluplysa
You can also add 50 grams of rice is you want, a bit of white pepper and spring onions. But its just a matter of taste. This recipe in the video shows you how to make it well :) bon apetit!
Oh definitely! The world is your oyster.
There's a stew like this in Ireland too
We're only one c apart.
@@IcelandFoodCentre yep
Riquisimo..
I remember pressuring our housemate to cook this for us 😄
Did you succeed?
Iceland Food Centre He made us get the ingredients at Bónus, but then he always cooked for us reluctantly. 😋 Now I know how to recreate it.
Can you please specify the amount of lamb and how many servings from this?
I always thought you use a slow cooker ?
Can I fry the vegetables a bit 😅
How much water do you use for the stew
Just enough to cover the lamb.
The exact recipe is here on the website: www.icelandfoodcentre.com/kjotsupa-icelandic-lamb-soup/
Wait this meal is Icelandic? My dad always make soup like this😂
It's as Icelandic as it gets - Sounds like your dad is an honorary Viking!
But of course, lots of Icelandic food has influences elsewhere, so no doubt there'll be similar foods all over the world.
True. And Im glad that influence on Icelandic food exist. Because they are truly delicious
My Amma always put a handful of rice into it as well. Nammi nammi now I’m hungry for this!
@@brightpurpleviking mmm soup with rice? Never tried that. I usually just put small pasta
@@brightpurpleviking Rice or barley is quite common. It's not something we're personally used to, but every family has their own recipe. If you make it, please let us know how it went!
Köttsoppa?
Köttsoppa.
Lol this is called Kashmir in Kazakhstan....
