Though your argument is sound, it doesn't really relate to WHY people like these types of things. I do fully agree that a full on re-release is the best way to preserve a game rather than remakes or remasters, but the audience for these games just like getting to play games again in higher definition with less clunky controls.

The issue with 'remasters' are stuff like the Yakuza 3 remaster which completely tarnished the game's reputation by breaking the combat. The original game was designed for 30fps, so when the remaster came out and was 60fps, the combat broke and enemies had double the reaction time (and thus ended up always blocking your attacks) - in the original game you could easily sidestep enemies if they were blocking and hit them from behind, but in the remaster the enemies automatically block if you try that.
Also, I swear to god if they delist Dead Rising 1 to get people to buy the remaster....

i feel like no one takes video games seriously as art form and thats really sad. look at the comment in any video of an old game and you will inevitably see "god id love a remake of this" "this needs a remaster" and so on. and whats so bizarre is these people already LIKE the game theyre talking about thats what so bizarre. nobody looks at a painting and says "wow this is really cool they should repaint this" no one reads their favorite book and says "they should rewrite this" people are even opposed to remakes in film for the most part. i dont understand the industry's obsession with george lucasing old games because the odds of a remaster screwing nothing up is near zero. they almost always bork the lighting or some other visual.

I still think RE2 Remake is peak. I feel remakes of games are way different from a book or art. Games have way more depth than words on a page. Camera angles, mechanics, art style, story, etc.
I'm actually one who argues remakes (that are done well) are better than half ass remasters because it's truly a different way to play the game. Then the old game can still be preserved or emulated for people who still want to play them.
Of course, remakes can be somewhat shite like RE3 remake. Bare bones raccoon city with gameplay that lasts only 5ish hours.
It's more an argument of passion vs greed. If developers care about the source material. Then a remake is fine for modern audiences.
I definitely wish more new IPs were being made, though.
Games are 100% an art form and I would say it's regarded as so more now, than ever before. The first time I played Last of Us blew my fucking mind. So did Bioshock when it first came out.
I think Resident Evil gets away with the remakes because the material to remake is actually older. Going from RE2 1998 to RE2 2019 was a surreal expirence for me. I remember being a kid and playing the OG.

I completely agree! It’s so bizarre to me that people think “remaking games” is fixing them when often times they remove and change the identity of the original. The fact that og games of remakes are rendered “useless” after a game is remade is sad, it’s not game preservation by making a new remake for “modern audiences”, it’s changing the experience of the original to appeal to a wider audience.

off the record is generally the way to go - it improves some things from dr2, has more content like a new area and combo cards, and also allows for a much sillier time since it's frank and not canon to the series. if you like frank from dr1 and photography, get off the record. normal dr2 is GOOD, and should definitely be played on it's own, but really only if you care about the plot. the plot is much more serious in dr2 cause it's canon, and not played for laughs like off the record. both are generally vry good games, and do have certain elements that change up the endings/how the plot happens, so in the long run if you really want more out of the characters, I'd play both, but if you dont care abt the overall franchise's plot and just want shit to do, I'd do off the record. both are roughly 5 dollars rn on the summer steam/capcom sale
