+Robert Meadows ..... One of the greatest comebacks to make the playoffs, one of the best NLDS vs. Phillies and probably one of the best WS of all-time. It should be a movie.........
"They just. Won't. Go. Away." Loved that!! Those words summed up the Cards season perfectly. Cards were almost out of the playoff hunt, fought tooth and nail all the way through, and came out World Series champs.
It also took a monumental collapse by the Braves. The reason that's bigger than Boston's collapse the same year is because the Braves were in a different division, and didn't play the Cardinals the entire second half of the month of September. The Red Sox were in the same division as the Rays who play head-to-head meaning they could easily make up ground themselves, they weren't as dependent on other teams. Remember when the Cardinals beat the Astros, then had to rush back to the clubhouse to watch the Braves and Phillies battle it out, because they didn't know if they had clinched yet? That's the thing, if the Braves win that game, they'd have to have played a tie-breaker with the Cardinals to determine the Wild Card (pre-two Wild Cards). That's why the Braves collapse in 2011 was historic, they had that Wild Card locked up, but choked at the end, especially allowing Philly to sweep them in Atlanta (the last game was huge, Kimbrel on the mound in the top of the 9th and he couldn't hold their lead).
He talked about how he was praying that he would remain calm and focused if he was in this situation. He wasn’t praying for a hit. He just prayed that he would be able to compete well. And then there were no thoughts going through his head in that moment. Pretty cool story. You should check it out if you haven’t.
because it wasn't as dramatic as Freese which book ended it. He was a key, but if Washington hadn't tried to make up for not playing the "no doubles" defense in the 9th by doing it in the 10th when it really wasn't needed, then the Rangers would have won that game. For all intents and purposes, the Rangers had that game, and Washington's missmanagement is why it was lost- even the announcers were questioning the positioning of the players!
Jack Son Dude whatever if Berkman wouldn't have got that hit the cardinals would have lost it was a very big hit so you don't know what your talking about.
Funny how this year I remember the MLB being upset that it was a Cardinals v Rangers WS because of the "low ratings" and "lack of excitement". Boy were they wrong!!!!!
I was a huge Texas Ranger fan at the time. Hamilton was my favorite player. I was working six twelve hour days as a safe room welder. I was a complete mess that whole series with no one at work with which to commiserate.
I still remember in 2004 when we were down in the ninth inning against the Giants and on the verge of missing the playoffs and berkman hit a three run homer to put us ahead and save us so many times Berkman saved the Astros.
Stop it people I'm 11 miles from the stadium nobody here in St Louis has forgotten about Lance berkman. We do not win it without Lance Berkman!! We FN love Lance Berkman!!
I questioned the signing of the aging Berkman as much as anyone prior to 2011, but man I’m so glad he proved me wrong. .301 AVG, 31 HR, 94 RBI, all-star and 7th in MVP voting. He was huge that whole year
Given the fact that David Freese had already extended the game in the previous inning, Berkman's choked floater into "no-man's-land" instantly raises this game to the lofty status of maybe the greatest World-Series game ever played. It's strange what we sometimes remember about big games--the little moments within the big moments....For me, the thing I will always remember about Berkman's hit is the shot of the first-base umpire just moments afterward (4:03) glaring at Berkman in utter amazement and humility at what the grizzled veteran had just accomplished.
People forget that offseason, it was between Texas and St. Louis for Berkman to sign as a FA - he not only chose St. Louis, but in a radio interview before the season started bashed Texas and said the reason he didn’t sign with them bc they were an average team with no good pitchers. Had they resigned Cliff Lee, he said he would have signed with Texas. That is what makes his at bat even crazier. Texas fans would have LOVED to no only win but to win the WS with Berkman being the last out. Although Texas proved to be better than average - Berkman had added extra pressure with his at bat. I would have loved to have seen Texas get the last laugh, but he was clutch, even though was being an honest jerk in that interview.
"There it goes, a long drive, if it stays fair, home run!"- Dick Stockton, October 21, 1975 "Little roller up along first....BEHIND THE BAG! It gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight and the Mets win it!"- Vin Scully, October 25, 1986 "And we'll see you, tomorrow night!"- Jack Buck, October 26, 1991 "Freese hits it in the air to center, we will see you tomorrow night!"- Joe Buck, October 27, 2011 Game 6. In some ways, more dramatic than game 7. One team could leave and be the champs, or the other could win to force a 7th game.
Whoever doubted that Berkman wouldn't come through in that situation are crazy and don't know him and how clutch of a hitter he is he did it for the Astros for years
Ron Washington didn't, because he walked the wrong guy! Seriously, if he had walked both Pujols and Berkman, Craig likely still grounds out (or strikes out), because Craig wasn't known to be a clutch hitter like Berkman.
St. Louis Cardinals are so clutch. Coming from an SF Giants fan, they're a great team. Can't say the same about the Rangers. They had all the chances to beat the Cardinals. They couldn't get it done.
This classic game came on The Silver Anniversary of the game where the ball went in between Bill Buckner's Legs, also in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.
Almost the entirety of my dad's family are huge ranger fans. They talked so much mad trash until the Freese hit in the 9th. My uncle said when Berkman hit this shot, he knew they were going to lose the series.
im a yankees fan die hard but this was the best ws i ever saw and im not afraid to say it i was rooting for the cardinals hardddd first cuz i respect that team second i was an alber pujols fan and third berkman was a former yankee plus i hated the rangers harddddd
Ryan Hardison that's just that all of the Cardinals hitters were hot. Especially Pujols. Berkman was clutch the whole damn season leading up to the Postseason and then was even more clutch then. Me and my dad both bought Berkman Jerseys because of his performance for the Cardinals. Although we hated him when he was an Astro. Lol.
Berkman was clutch his whole career and with the Astros too. Je lived for moments like that i loved Biggio and Bagwell but if it would have game down to it with the game on the line i would pick Berkman anyday.
That was all on Ron Washington. Had he played the guys normally, the ball would have been caught in shallow center. He clearly tried to atone for his 9th inning mistake by not doing it on Freese, so he then does it in the 10th on Berkman, and both times bite him in the butt! The Rangers didn't lose that game, poorly planned player positioning by Ron Washington lost them that game!
I always liked Berkman…even when he was killing us with the ‘Stros. When I heard we had picked him up I remember calling my dad to tell him and we were both excited. We had no idea how huge he was going to be for the Cards. 🙂
Whoever thought Berkman wouldn't come through is ridiculous and you don't know him very well then I watched him for years with the Astros and saw him get big clutch homers and hits all the time especially late in the game. He is my favorite Astro besides Springer of all time.
If you’re a Rangers fan this game was an absolute nightmare! 2 times w 2 outs and couldn’t close it out. I think a lot of depression hit those fans when they lost game 7.
The most intense drama I've ever seen watching baseball. I mean the pressure on Berkman and the pitcher was insane. One strike away from a WS win- man that was something.
When McDonald's picked that slot for the McRib commercial, I bet they had no idea they were picking one of the most exciting ad slots in baseball history lol
I promise almost every time you needed a big hit or homer late in the game Berkman delivered he was so good under pressure late in games and clutch he did it for years with the Astros
This is the difference between a baseball team like the 2011 Cardinals and the 2022 Cardinals. There's not a player on this 2011 team that gave up or gave in or lost hope. Every player on that team knew they were going to win that world series. Now every player on the 2022 Cardinals team gives up when they're down a run and the ninth.
Two outs. Bottom of the tenth with Texas leading by a run. Hitting a baseball is incredibly difficult. When Pujols is walked take a look at what he does after the fourth ball. He claps his hand. With the odds against his team he claps his hands. That shows a NEVER die attitude and faith in his teammates. This is why Albert was walked.
I respect the fact walking Pujous but people forget how clutch Berkman was his whole career especially with the Astros he thrived in situations like that I saw him get so many big hits and homers with the Astros especially late in the game
Probably the second best WS I’ve ever seen (01 being the best). As a cubs fan, I knew all too well that Berkman was a cold-blooded pure hitter. This also reminded me how bad I felt for Wash at the end because he was just brutal as a manager in that WS.
That 2001 one featured one of the greatest comebacks off the greatest playoff closer. I don't think you could have scripted a better World Series than have just Johnson and Schilling being the only starters the DBacks had that won.
I still remember in 2004 when the Astros were on verge of being eliminated from the playoffs and they were losing to the Giants in the 9th inning and Berkman saved them hitting a Three run homer to put them ahead in the Ninth he saved there season.
One of the best moments in modern history, kinda ruined by buck's boring voice and choice of words. If you listened to the Cardinals radio announcer he sounded MUCH better
you can't get on ron washington for walking pujols there...he's albert fucking pujols and up by 1 with the world series on the line anyone in their right mind would rather face berkman...pitcher just didn't get the out
How many times were the Texas Rangers one strike away from winning The World Series in this game? They had two strikes on Berkman before he got the hit.

Because the law of averages would indicate that since he was slumping since game 3 that it would be more likely that he'd get hot and hit a streak to "average" the slump out.

only good joe buck line in history
This team crashed the post season party what a team what a ride!
Thanks to Lance and David, I was able to attend Game 7! Drove from Nashville all night and arrived Downtown as soon as the sun came up!😂
This guy is so cold clutch that he didn’t even show emotions after that biggest hit of his career, just calm and just another day doing his job.
He talked about how he was praying that he would remain calm and focused if he was in this situation. He wasn’t praying for a hit. He just prayed that he would be able to compete well. And then there were no thoughts going through his head in that moment. Pretty cool story. You should check it out if you haven’t.

Berkman made a habit of getting big hits he did it for the Astros for years and in the postseason it doesn't surprise he got this hit at.
That dramatic if he doesn't get that hit they lose so it was very big.
As an Astros fan I never forgot it. Was so proud to see Puma come up big. He was such a good hitter from the left side.
Berkman is a beast!!!Will forever remember him for this at bat. Beyond clutch.
What about all those clutch hits against the Cardinals as an Astro?
To me, he will forever be remembered as One of the Killer Bees in Houston!
I cannot tell you how many times I had a heart attack during this game :P
I cannot tell you how close I came to crapping my pants twice
I actually died and this is what was going on in heaven.
Funny how this year I remember the MLB being upset that it was a Cardinals v Rangers WS because of the "low ratings" and "lack of excitement". Boy were they wrong!!!!!
i was mad into it rooting hard for the cardinals as if they was my NY yankees 😂😂 best ws i ever saw!!!

Berkman just looked so calm. Greatest game I ever saw.
Jon Jay was the perfect guy to have on second because of his speed.
***** he was halfway down the homeplate line before the ball even landed
Plus he was running as pitch was thrown since there were 2 outs and 2 strikes, made it a little easier for him to score so easily.

It was a good pitch by Feldman. The coaching staff was dumb enough to position the outfielders on the warning track.
That was all on Ron Washington. Had he played the guys normally, the ball would have been caught in shallow center.
