      It also took a monumental collapse by the Braves. The reason that's bigger than Boston's collapse the same year is because the Braves were in a different division, and didn't play the Cardinals the entire second half of the month of September. The Red Sox were in the same division as the Rays who play head-to-head meaning they could easily make up ground themselves, they weren't as dependent on other teams. Remember when the Cardinals beat the Astros, then had to rush back to the clubhouse to watch the Braves and Phillies battle it out, because they didn't know if they had clinched yet? That's the thing, if the Braves win that game, they'd have to have played a tie-breaker with the Cardinals to determine the Wild Card (pre-two Wild Cards). That's why the Braves collapse in 2011 was historic, they had that Wild Card locked up, but choked at the end, especially allowing Philly to sweep them in Atlanta (the last game was huge, Kimbrel on the mound in the top of the 9th and he couldn't hold their lead).

      He talked about how he was praying that he would remain calm and focused if he was in this situation. He wasn’t praying for a hit. He just prayed that he would be able to compete well. And then there were no thoughts going through his head in that moment. Pretty cool story. You should check it out if you haven’t.

      because it wasn't as dramatic as Freese which book ended it. He was a key, but if Washington hadn't tried to make up for not playing the "no doubles" defense in the 9th by doing it in the 10th when it really wasn't needed, then the Rangers would have won that game. For all intents and purposes, the Rangers had that game, and Washington's missmanagement is why it was lost- even the announcers were questioning the positioning of the players!

    Given the fact that David Freese had already extended the game in the previous inning, Berkman's choked floater into "no-man's-land" instantly raises this game to the lofty status of maybe the greatest World-Series game ever played. It's strange what we sometimes remember about big games--the little moments within the big moments....For me, the thing I will always remember about Berkman's hit is the shot of the first-base umpire just moments afterward (4:03) glaring at Berkman in utter amazement and humility at what the grizzled veteran had just accomplished.

  • @2taggs2
    @2taggs2 Před 5 lety +2

    People forget that offseason, it was between Texas and St. Louis for Berkman to sign as a FA - he not only chose St. Louis, but in a radio interview before the season started bashed Texas and said the reason he didn’t sign with them bc they were an average team with no good pitchers. Had they resigned Cliff Lee, he said he would have signed with Texas.
    That is what makes his at bat even crazier. Texas fans would have LOVED to no only win but to win the WS with Berkman being the last out. Although Texas proved to be better than average - Berkman had added extra pressure with his at bat. I would have loved to have seen Texas get the last laugh, but he was clutch, even though was being an honest jerk in that interview.

With the odds against his team he claps his hands. That shows a NEVER die attitude and faith in his teammates. This is why Albert was walked.

      That 2001 one featured one of the greatest comebacks off the greatest playoff closer. I don't think you could have scripted a better World Series than have just Johnson and Schilling being the only starters the DBacks had that won.

    I still remember in 2004 when the Astros were on verge of being eliminated from the playoffs and they were losing to the Giants in the 9th inning and Berkman saved them hitting a Three run homer to put them ahead in the Ninth he saved there season.

    Because the law of averages would indicate that since he was slumping since game 3 that it would be more likely that he'd get hot and hit a streak to "average" the slump out.
