If somebody broke their arm and you told them all you need is a good friend, we would look at that person like they had three heads. But when it comes to mental health, all you need is a good friend. I find this very interesting. We really do place zero value on mental health as a society. And then wonder why so many people are off the wall....

The problem with this, beyond that a lot of mental issues require professional training to handle appropriately (e.g. BPD and schizophrenia), is that it's a massive burden we'd all be placing on each other. The mental toll would be substantial on most people, making the problem ultimately no better. We aren't going to solve this with bootstraps, we need to fundamentally rethink how we've structured our society to isolate us from community support.

One thing I will say about trying different therapists, which I have done (5 and I’m your age), is that it can be very demoralising. It really does depend on where you are mentally whether you’re able to seek out other options or not. It’s not as easy as saying you care more about other things. Just my two cents.

Ultimately You are the one deciding where you are how you feel and what you should be doing
A therapist should not tell you any of that (unless you meet one of the really specific criteria where they should)
do not hesitate to switch often or even stop if you feel good enough
The one time I went to therapy (as a child) my therapist advised me to stop because I said I didn't feel like more session would be useful
Not because I was fully fine but because I considered the rest of the way would just need time

Coming from a mental health background, I can tell you quality of online therapists and client facing are really no different. You will get those who truly care and want to help, and others who just need to get thru a session to earn a commission. Its 100% correct you have to find the right synergy between 2 people. Whether its online or face to face, you'll know when the fit is right when you are comfortable and making some progress
The other thing is, mental health is about self exploration. Talk therapy is meant for the patient to reveal things and explore thoughts, emotions, ideas, and make connections for their behavior. The old "use your brain" analogy. The therapist is merely a guide to ask the right questions to help you foster those "AHA!" moments.
Lastly therapy, is not a quick panacea to your troubles. Someone wise once said, "It took you decades to form these unhealthy patterns of thoughts, it will take some time to reverse them"

What bothers me about therapy as a profession is, in the physical medical space there are different specialized professions. You've got heart specialists, feet specialists, doctors who dedicate them to teeth only, doctors who specialize in throat, nose and ears. And they are all labeled as their own field. If you've got ear problems, you don't go to a heart doctor, you go to an ear doctor. If you ask a heart doctor to look at your ear, they can do so, but they won't be able to help you much.
Yet when it's about mental health, it's just "therapist". All specializations, be it relationship problems, learning disabilities, post-traumatic stress, or depression, they are all just called "therapist" without distinction. Shouldn't therapists also be split into different specializations like the physical side of the medical profession is like?

I've gone to a therapist for a few years now, my life has really improved, much more value was added compared to what I paid. I doubt I would get along with my therapist in the outside world, but I think he has been helpful. He doesn't talk a lot, rarely gives me "advice", he is really only there to listen and ask a question or two. In some ways, this makes me want to do stuff during the week so that I have things to talk about.
I never went into this thinking that going to therapy would fix anything, in fact I went with the exact opposite viewpoint. My mother made me go to therapy, in fact she chose the therapist. When I started talking realised that I really did have a lot of issues...

I think the reason people give up after only visiting one therapist is because you're never guaranteed any positive results after spending so much time and money. We know someone like you can repair our Macbooks. We know a doctor can fix our broken leg. I don't like gambling thousands of dollars and tens of hours on something that may or may not work. If I buy something that doesn't work or I don't like, I can return it for a refund. It's not possible to tell a therapist that they're worthless or have traumatized you further and then demand a refund on your time and money.

John Cleese speaks about some research that was done where the researcher interviewed professional people from all walks of life and all trades, from plumbers to university academics, medical doctors to farmers. I forget the exact numbers, but the point is that right across the board with all these professions they all stated much the same thing: There was a relatively small percentage of people in their own profession to whom they'd refer a friend or family member, with the vast majority of their colleagues being at best lazily ineffective, and then a larger minority being bad or unskilled or even dangerous.
What's fascinating is that this would seem to be a universal perception regardless of profession, trade or vocation.
Bottom line with therapies of all kinds, in my personal experience, is that you not only have to find someone with the requisite technical skills, training and clinical experience, that person ALSO has to be someone to whom you can relate. That means personal referral is just a starting point.
If you find someone who you can do good work with one time in ten, you hit the jackpot. Not so different to plumbers, electricians, decorators etc. etc. when you think about it.

It depends upon what a person is dealing with if therapy will actually help. A lot of people are dealing with chronic health issues or depression caused by the environment they are in. People can go to numerous therapists and try all the positive thinking, mind exercises, and medication they want, but if the health issues and environment stay the same, the depression won't go away.

    • @collinhayes9509

That’s very true. I think it’s important to know that there is time and place for getting a therapist.
If someone was unaware of why they’re feeling depressed, a therapist could help them figure out what the root is. They can provide you with ideas/tools to then (hopefully) help yourself. They don’t fix your life for you, although I wish it was that easy.
For me, I just started therapy again and appreciate the alternative perspective they’ve provided on recent bad situations I’ve had, or discuss upcoming decisions I’m feeling indecisive about. It’s especially helpful if you don’t have a good friend or family member to talk to when you need.

Not at all true. Sadness is a result of betrayed expectation. If you have no expectation, you can feel no sadness.
Even if you are being beaten every night. Oh well. It's beatin' time again. What can ya do? You can not control your environment, but you can control your expectations. Seek a better life, but have no expectations. You decide what you want and what you need.
Of course, most people aren't being beaten every night. Most people's problems are much tamer, and yet most people are much sadder than I was when I was being beaten every night. There came a point when I realized, happiness is what you make it. And now I'm not being beaten every night, but I'm not any happier.

Thank you, Louis. This was a really honest and necessary video for many and one that I know I personally needed to hear.
The part towards the end about wanting an easy out for any kind of mental help ("doesn't work for me," "all therapists are shills," etc) is common and a thought process I've been through myself. The monetary value idea really makes you think about self-worth too, so many of us are willing to spend $1000s on electronics/cars/things in general that we like or want but won't spend $100s on self-improvement even when we have the means. It's challenging to go through the introspection and self-analysis when it isn't something you've been through before or when your self-esteem is at a low point, but you've made the decision that it's not important and you're going to ignore it.
Read on the internet a while back: "Nothing gets better on its own. You either fix it or it stays fucked."

I knew beyond a doubt that the advice she was giving me was wrong, so I left, did the thing she was actively discouraging me not to do, and I have been off all anxiety medications and have been happier and healthier ever since.

I think part of the issue is that "Mental Health" is not valued in society. We do not promote it. We don't care about peoples problems. This is a side effect of us all being part of the peasantry class. A class of people who work our asses off to get nowhere, but are none the less part of the machine of the economy. A cog in the wheel, if you will. If there is one thing people do value it is shiny things. Shiny things that companies shit out with the ethos of value. Which is why we end up valuing those shiny things beyond ourselves.
The prevailing message out there, subtly, is that people have no value, THINGS have value. So here we are. Everyone struggles, nobody cares. But hey new shiny! Beware of these things as they consume us all slowly. We all have value, but I think the powers that be will never promote this because the recognition of value in people is among people, not corporations or government. To them, we are simply tools or assets. Line items. So put your value in people, not things is what i'm saying, and we might see each others mental health improve because at some point we might actually give a shit about each others problems. /Rant.
You ARE valued, you are loved. But it's people who can do that for you. A macbook, and by extention, a corporation cannot love you back.

The key here isn't value, it's belief. From my own experience of just existing in the world I can believe that someone who is paying enough money will eventually find a good employee if they iterate enough, but I think that many people have problems that just can't be solved by talk therapy or current meds and it's important to acknowledge that. I have friends who would greatly benefit from therapy because they're telling themselves some fundamental lie or they have some trauma that they just need to be talked through. I also have other friends that seem to clearly understand their issues and wouldn't really benefit from that kind of approach at all. The people in the second category tend to be pretty aware of that fact and in my opinion correctly believe that the methods you're laying out won't help them. That's why it's a hot button issue for a lot of people.

I got a 2014 Mac Mini for cheap and it runs Ubuntu very well. I’m considering repurposing it as a “headless” server for some purpose, or maybe a media server, or maybe a kick ass emulation box. Or maybe all of the above?

I think part of the issue is that people view therapists as a sort of "infallible professional". They don't think that someone who went to college could do any wrong nor could someone considered a "medical expert" ever slack on their job.

There are also the people who don't have the $70 or $150/hr to spare for shopping around. Maybe if therapists gave a free 1 hour consultation to see if they're the right fit?
(And then there was the one family member who would go to marriage counseling, not do the "homework," not do the introspection, and then would just give up.

Louis clearly stated that IF you had the spare income/money to shop around for the perfect car or the perfect employee, you would have money to do the same for the right therapist.

I also appreciate you not shilling ball shavers, sh1tty cereal, VPN services, or any of this other crap that you know is garbage. Not recommending everything means to me, when you do actually recommend something it may have some actual value. I commend you for not being a scumbag.

Not exactly a therapist but I've been seeing a Psychologist regarding my medication every 1-3 months via call. Maybe 3 or 4 months down the road he unintentionally made me realize that I am nowhere near as antisocial as I thought I was and that I can easily make friends with a lot of people. Not all at once but yeah. I've never been a fan of looking for therapy online so I'm glad I avoided that worse help nonsense. Their ads annoyed me too much. Don't have therapy sessions on the Internet folks. Unless your therapist is willing to have sessions held on Discord or something.

I was not expecting this video based on the title. I thought it would’ve been an interesting topic, but not as deep as it ended up being. This was a pleasant surprise. I’m someone that had a very traumatic childhood and just started therapy for it. Going into it I felt hopeless, “how can this help?” And honestly, I still have those thoughts, but even after a short period I’m seeing the benefits of it.
What I can say, as someone who thought I will eventually get over the trauma, move on, etc. Things won’t change, and you won’t improve without putting the effort into it. Also, keep in mind you’re not only effecting yourself, you’re impacting those around you too. Your significant other, friends, family and coworkers.
