  • On the first anniversary of the death of composer Jerome Kern, a young Frank Sinatra uses all of his remarkable vocal prowess to pay tribute to his friend with this stirring rendition of Ol' Man River, perhaps Sinatra's finest performance of this American classic and one which he performed many times over the course of his long career. Recorded from a live radio broadcast.
Recorded from the original transcription disc from the Ric Ross Frank Sinatra Collection.

The Voice from this era is just about unbeatable IMHO.

A bravura performance of a song that once again Sinatra took ownership of when you think of certain songs - nobody touches him as a performer in this vein - the ability to give this incredibly emotive version and yet always been in control of his instrument and would do this many more times in his career - he is and will always be the undisputed Champ!

James, thank you for sharing these rare songs with us. I also enjoy the quality of your songs. This one is quite better than my version and it's from December 11, 1944 from Songs by Sinatra. DANKE SCHÖN!

For those that believe a young Sinatra did not have the ability to hit the low notes when required, skip to the 3:25 mark to hear an inspired FS stop the show with a dramatic two-octave finish.

Ouch young franks tessitura too high ! Listen to his middle aged version a full octave lower!
