Porsche Cayman 981 GTS - One Take

- This 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS is stock except for a set of HRE Flowform FF01 Wheels. The GTS is the top-tier trim of the Cayman S line, with a bit more power, lots of options included, and the sportiest suspension options south of the GT4. It's a lovely car, but how does it feel after driving some very fast Caymans?

I had to pause it at the "I'm so spoiled." It's not fair to the car or owner if you're constantly mentioning how there are better Porsche cars. Of course there are better ones, but we want to hear about this one.
i agree, he wasn't very fair in parts :(
Yeah, that was kinda a dick comment to the owner of the car, but I'm sure the owner is well aware of the 718 and it attributes. In all fairness, Matt does A LOT of Cayman videos and no doubt the owner knows this.
Matt seemed really whiny... just enjoy the damn car and focus on THAT one...
Well aren't just mister perfect...
To be fair I really enjoy one-takes and commentary from Matt in general. I also like this Cayman so I was expecting to hear it's praises instead of how slow it feels in comparison to one-off build.
Love the Cayman, hate the commentary.
Then why did you tune in?(not being a dbag, just curious)
I'm an enthusiast like you and try to base my opinion on the merits of the individual vehicle. It sounds like you are biased because you sample so many and this is not informative for your viewers. Can't help but to compare and contrast but in this particular video you even had the apparent owner on the defense. Not trying to be offensive, just my opinion. Best
Why do you have to be such so smug/patronizing at times? I don't think you even mean to do it, but it's something you need to work on.
Because he comes from money and is out of touch.
X V i totally feel that this video was pretty lousy and wish that Jay Leno would do something similar as too have guys with theyre cool cars do a road experience because it would be more of an cooler all around vibe and this one felt like Matt was forced to put it down rather than appreciate the car unique aspects. And im not even an Porsche guy but someone who is down to earth.
David T. where ? when
+Okus Sidenote sick burn. Please post a pic of yourself so we can judge. Thx
ayeee, it's the guy who wanted to see Jeremy's nudes on The Grand Tour lmaoooooooooooo. one of the funniest comments I've read so far lol
my least favorite one take, couldn't even finish it, commentary was awful, and you seemed pissed off...
I don't think Matt cared for the guy.
He did seem pretty full of himself.
classiccarz I agree with the guy above. I think Matt sounded put off by the dude.
Some guy who reads a few forums on the car he owns and is now an expert😂😂😂 He used auto-blip on the track day because he can't drive and is scared!!! It's not a super slow car, however it's not nearly fast enough to get scared of. I think Matt just didn't really like the guy, he seemed super stuck up and braggy. So Matt put him in his place by letting him now he DIDN'T have the greatest car in the world!!! Which by his comment at the end, you can tell he clearly thinks it is.
I felt like you spent way too much time telling this guy how his car wasn't powerful enough for you and it felt slow compared to other Porsches. Would rather have heard more about this car and it's merits.
BBDSmint I said it's merits: practicality, comfort, build
Quality, good sound, good inputs, good seats,
Great steering. All of that is in there. You just chose to ignore it and focus on the fact that the car doesn't feel fast once you've driven real fast cars. If you focus on the positives, you hear the positives. But to say they aren't there is drastically misleading even if the overall tone is boredom.
well said
I think a Cayman isn't a car that needs to feel fast, is it? It's for momentum driving, especially on some nice backroads/canyons/mountain passes. It's just a nice allrounder, that gives you the sensation of controlling a machine, not covering ground with excessive speed.
thee Mitchi That right there is what is often forgotten.
BBDSmint well to be fair when weird guys are slightly cocky and have little forum egos, matt doesn't seem to feed them and kind of is harsher in them. When they are modest and cool he usually likes to compliments and encourages them.
Dude, Matt... This guy had a good amount of knowledge and seemed articulate enough to really get into some interesting points... Can't believe you pretty much ignored 95% of his conversation starters... WOw.
ANIMALFRIES - he was arrogant. Hands down.
Matt was a tard in this video. 981 over the shitty sounding 718 all day every day.
Matt is always arrogant as fuck. He sounds like he eats cheeseburgers for every meal. Spits out words he has heard other hosts say, it's a shit channel. He's lucky enough to have a decent camera and live in Cali. Pretty much anyone with those two things can be a car channel now. Throttle House is a much better channel or new Hagerty with Jason Cammisa
@@Rhcpbedders i am kind of debating this currently. I got the blessing from wifey that I can get a Porsche ( I like the Cayman) so I am thinking a 981 GTS or do I splurge and go for the 718 GTS 4.0. Worry about the cost but both are NA engines. I can save a lot by going 918, it just wont have the HP that the 718 has.
@@ronin120 I bought a 981 Boxster S with PSE. IMHO 981 is the best sounding Porsche with the exception of GT3. The 718 GTS 4.0 is good no doubt, but doesn’t sound quite as nice
"entry level track car."
That's absurd. An example of an entry level track car is a $3,000 Miata.
Exactly... a $70-85k car is not entry level lmao
@@watermelon2521 And not a track toy unless you can afford to thrash a 80k car. Matt came from a wealth family. It shows.
The older I get, the more I appreciate being able to use 100% of a car's performance without getting thrown in jail. This car ticks a lot of boxes for me.
80 mph in 2nd?
A future classic.
I'd rather have this over any other Cayman variant. The GT4's wing looks ridiculous, functional though it may be.
I was the opposite. When I saw the wing on the GT4 it just added to the cayman lust. It took many months but I hunted one and will probably hold on to it for a while.
Unless i can find a GT3RS for MSRP.
That wing makes me weak in the knees :(
Holy shit you look like Taylor Swift FML
Zhemin Lin lol?
Umm..Its still way too early to tell. As of now only certain 911 hold its value besides Cayman GTS is basically a Cayman S with some extra detail.
I like how Matt was basically like a spoiled baby the whole time lol
"Yeah this feels like it's dragging an anchor"
"Doesn't compare to the turbo motor"
"I need more power"
Then why do you watch yea dumb fuk?
Because I like watching the One Take series normally? Also I like Caymans and I was expecting to hear praise rather than him talking about how slow it is lol
That wasn't meant for you =) it was meant for the "silver spoon baby" dude...
A very large spoon.
So because it's the 'perfect enthusiast car' he can never sell it or appreciate anything else? Listen to yourself.
Such a beautiful car, the owner seems very intelligent about his purchase.
He wanted a Porsche that was Pure.
It's the thinking man's driving machine.
Damn, Matt you basically just took a dump on this guy.
Matt you were pretty much a snob in this episode. It's a good thing the owner really likes his car.
Matt seemed in a bad mood
He's been driving Porsches a lot lately, he's probably a bit bored of them at this point.
I'm bored of watching them. Different number, different engine... but they all kinda look and sound the same. Maybe more older Porsches, weird ones, something odd?
I would love an RWB on this show for once.
Why? They basically add weight to a not so fat porsche. Unless you are talking about a proper built. RWB is just a liberty walk porsche (dumbing it down to you)
not really
This seems a bit awkward
When someone says their Cayman GTS is not a daily driver, you always follow up with "what else do you have?" Car guy 101!
I know this guy from the local LA Porsche Owners club, his daily is an Audi S4
Please excuse Matt, he was on his period.
Roger Clark
Seriously, straight bitch status
Roger Clark what did he dooooo?
Hahaha, lmao. I TOTALLY agree. Matt was bleeding this day
You constantly interrupted the guy and all you did was tell him it doesn't have enough torque.
Hannessomething you nailed it... this review was a waste of time
Being a douche is what he does
Was comparing it to his vet , constantly saying he needed more. I've watched videos where they compared the driving quality of a base cayman with a c8 and they both chose the cayman over the c8
Sorry Matt but this video is one of your worst. You pretty much hated on his car. He's brought it to you, to drive how you want to, where you want to...for your channel and you spend 90% of the video talking about the other porsches. I think it's a beautiful car and I'd have loved to have driven this.
Ikr. My dad has one and Jesus that thing does not feel slow at all...
I would love to drive one! Sweet cars! That the regular man can attain.
Yes Matt, this vid made you look like an uncultured bum man. It's the pinnacle of German engineering, a thinking man's driving machine.
You have one of the best handling sports cars ever made and you drive it in a straight line and ask why it doesn’t have a turbo. Yeah it doesn’t have the torque of a turbo. That’s like commenting that it doesn’t have rear seats. Nice.
Aside from all of the bantering, the car itself sounds absolutely amazing.
I would have liked to hear more about what you thought of the car. It was a bit rude to compare this one to modded ones with the incessant "I've driven faster cars before..."
Cayman GTS that's what I thought of the car. Forgettable once you've gone fast
I love your videos Matt but I felt this one was unprofessional, we get that you think its 'slow and has no torque', the guy drove out there and all you did was bash his car in every department and cut the guy off in the middle of a thought.
I hope in the future you review the car for more than just its power and not ridicule a fellow gearhead.
I will give your channel another shot, but please be mindful.
I saw you go on about how great the Jaguar f types were (both the 6 and 8) and you said you thought they were fast, very fast with type r IIRC. Yet with the cayman, which has comparable power to the 6 and weighs around 750lbs less, you say that it feels slow. Makes sense.
He just got out if the V8 Cayman everything is slow, get a life.
Disrespectful
Looks like Matt was having an off day with this. The normal road was closed and this one was full of traffic. Who knows what other things he was dealing with... we all forgave a automotive journalist for punching a guy on his bad day. We all have off days. This is a source of income for him. Ever have a bad day at work and pushed through? Prime example of this. Thanks for pushing through and providing us with FREE entertainment. I'll still watch tomorrow's video 👍🏻
These aren't free. He is making money off of them.
summeronthechain they are free for us to watch.
X V I am. I should say "most" have moved on. I am guessing you never liked Clarkson in the first place..
I can definitely relate to that ^ Used to watch top gear a lot but the thing is they try to hard and it's just entertainment they put almost 0 focus on what the show is supposed to be about, cars. This channel is about 100 times better than Top Gear as far as I'm concerned.
Grand Tour is awesome though.
The guy apologised, if you gonna harker clarkson for his mistakes then clearly he wasn't to your taste anyway. We've all had moments of loss of control, some, more severe than others. We are all unique. Some treat it like there is still a grudge when there is not, it's all been forgiven and forgotten but hey keep raking it up.
On topic, he was having an off day, this felt very uncomfortable to watch and had a "bored" tone to it which Matt seems to freely of admitted here. I can forgive him, I feel a bit bad for the owner for hey it's a popular car he's driven a lot of, shit happens, we move on, I am sure we won't get anything again like this if at all for a long while.
One of the best sounding, best driving Porsche's I've ever driven.
Matt stop talking about torque and turbo
Gabriel Aquino I thought he appreciated natural aspiration
I guess only if they make 500+ horsepower?
He did say an alright amount of things about it, just wasn't excited over it which makes sense. All Porsches have that Porsche feel and feel similar in ways after you've driven all of the model ranges.
He didn't ever compliment the actual motor directly (aside from sound) which is a shame. Really thought Matt would be the guy to like a natural engine.
Yup, change down so you're at higher rev's. It's really not that hard.
Seems like any 'problem' with this car is mostly down to the gearing.
funniest part when the guy is talking about auto rev matching and matt goes "ohh lets see how that works" "thats awful " hahah omg 😂
Sorry to say that, but I didn't enjoy this one take at all. No matter how much positive aspects you found about this car - the amount of unnecessary criticism was just over the top.
I don't care about all the fast Porsches you have driven lately, I just care about the car that you review at this exact moment. The way you talked in this video is rude towards the owner and especially your audience.
I cant get over, how good looking these Cayman's are. Perfection
The GTS is very hard to find.. Awesome car!
The WORST One Take to date.
great car but crappy review. if you want more power, then only do reviews on powerful cars! the gts is not about the power. it's a fantastic driver's car.
I have to applaud this guy for showing restraint and not keeping this beautiful machine nearly stock. A gorgeous white/black color combo, a PROPER six speed manual, plus an engine noise that sounds like my ears are making love to silk make this an outstanding machine. Bravo buddy.
The kid was doing a better job of commentary/analysis then the whining heffa are the wheel. What a drag Matt is sometimes- you’re the anchor bro
Much love for the, for now, last great sounding Boxster/Cayman Porsche built. I hope one day they'll return to fitting these cars with engins worthy of the concept. For a daily i like torque, but for a fun/sports car sound and throttle response is hugely important to me, so turbo is a nogo.
JohnnyNr5 same here, tq is great for traffic & the real world, but something about a high revving NA motor whem you have a perfect driving road all to yourself
Kirk: I need more power! Scotty: I'm giving it all she got captain!!!
Man its early but i love waking up to these again. Thank you Matt for bringing this content!
Love the 981. Side note: I live in Valencia and its crazy seeing you drive the roads I drive right next to my house.
Rough--as these One Takes go on, Matt seems to be getting over the format. His mood and the fact that he isn't enjoying what he's doing shows clearly here IMO.
Kudos to the owner for staying positive the entire video. I feel like I learned more from him than Matt.
Still a fan, just hope this video isn't the beginning of a trend.
I will never forget my ride in the 2007 Cayman. Pure sport car experience! And yes: the most beautifull design ever!!
I see why people were railing on you for talking about lack of speed, but that wasn't your main focus of talking with him during the drive. And a user on reddit from /r/cars said that the driver posted on NASIOC that he was completely fine with your critiques and appreciated that you spoke your mind about your preferences.
I love how he talks about lack of speed when it still does like a 4.something 0-60. That’s not the quickest thing on the road but it’s a car meant to feel the road
Everyone has a bad day, Matt. This was bad, and I know that you know that these reviews aren't about you, and what you've driven recently. They're about the car. You were complementary enough, so that was nice. Living is learning. Here's to clear roads ahead, my man!
Not enough power but that 80ish horsepower VW you drove last was just fine? LOL. Getting the same vibe as when you drove that tuned 2015 Mustang V6 (my car) and complained about the lack of power. Dude, the V6 has 300 HP and that's more than enough power for a daily driver. This porsche is the same thing here, beautiful car. Yeah it's not a 911, but the Cayman looks so much better.
There's a huge difference between an 80's VW and a relatively new Porsche...
Yeah, if its a piece of trash then Matt doesn't care. But if it's a reputable manufacturer, gets an H6, and then complains that it doesnt have 8 cylinders? lol, no this isn't V8 so stop comparing it to one.
Power to Weight is the key...that golf probably weighs a lot less than your stang.
You bought a V6 Mustang and you're confused why people say it doesn't have enough power?
Yeah I'm sure it handles like a mother but how much fun can you have with an engine that might as well be used to open and close garage doors (exaggeration lol).
Another great video from The Smoking Tire. Keep up the great work Mr. Farrah.
Love the black with white edges seatbelts. Classy.
My dream Cayman! 👌🏻 only 8 were delivered to Australia in Manual, I hope I get lucky enough to own one of them one day 🙏🏼
One of the nicest Porsches, dream car right now
I love how people are criticizing Matt for saying a stock car is under powered. Is he supposed to lie to the dude, and tell him his car is just as good or better than a 425hp Coyote Cayman??? Keep up the good work Matt, and I hope you can make it up to the Bay Area to do some One Take's on Highway 9 one day. They just repaved it, and it's frickin glorious.
The double shot was Matt shitting all over the car and also completely ignoring the owner's answers to Matt's questions (and ignoring him in general). I've watched at least 50 One Take's and this was bad, real bad but I'm still a fan.
before my life is over ill see ever Porsche in existence on this channel
I come to your channel when I see interesting cars or when I want to see comparisons between models of the same car. Your original Cayman video is where I first found out about your channel 6-7 months ago. You really seemed off your usual personality on this one. Sure the owner was a kind of weird/uppity but you really hammered the point of how slow the car felt.
Wish the owner was a little more laid back and not so uptight, beautiful car though!
The way he's ragging on the NA-GTS makes me think Porsche paid him for the 718 review and he's looking for another hand out
It's absolutely incredible that this is where people's brains go rather than the much more obvious possibility: I like the much faster, newer car better than this slower, old car.
Matt, 95% of your audience doesn't have nearly as much of experience with sportscars / performance vehicles as you do. Therefore, you should wonder what they actually do love about cars for themselves. You don't have to be a genius to figure out that the soundtrack is what makes people enthusiastic, rather than the torque you're talking about which they won't get their head around anyways. But beside this I wonder; what would you rather have? 718 Cayman S or 981 Cayman S? Let's keep the 991.2 outside of this for a second.
TheSmokingTire I've driven/cross-shopped all three of these cars (gt4, gts, 718) and I own one of them. They all share the same crappy transmission, two of them share similar suspension components, and one of them sounds like a BRZ. Is the slight bump in torque worth 2 less cylinders, maybe. But did the GTS feel like half a car you make it out to be, nope. (FYI I don't own the GTS)
That’s a sick Porsche
I'm a 987S owner and a Porsche fanboy but I'm glad Matt was honest in this video. Do you guys just want him to compliment every car and never criticize it just because it's rude to the owner next to him? I'd love a manual NA cayman/boxster with 400 hp stock too haha
Glad to see new videos after the break! Cool to see you took the Fox up too, thinking about those rolled wheel wells on my 5.0 '93 hatchback with everything except the hood and tire/rims stock. Also, curious what would be better after driving this. A new Cayman GTS or a generation older 911 of some type? Tbh, this guy seems way too tight and might I say a little egotistical? Good review none the less!
Mastered that handshake bro
Dude! Great timing with this video. I purchased a 981 S yesterday and was searching "981 One Take" yesterday afternoon. Delighted to see this pop up. That said, I'll hope you'll heed some of the comments here. I've loved seeing your videos rise in professionalism and I'm looking forward to watch whatever you do moving forward, but hope that you'll focus on keeping things relatable. Your job is to criticize, but to do so in a way that's informative to your viewers. Everyone knows that a 981 GTS feels slow compared to a McLaren or anything with 400WHP. How does it feel for a $75,000 car, though? You mentioned driving the 718, but didn't provide any info related to how those two compare, for example, which would have been an awesome, fairly unique insight. When you usually get positive comments, and the ones on this vid are so overwhelmingly negative, there's probably something amiss. Still, thanks for doing these! You're easily one of the most watchable, laid back, and honest CZcams personalities - I enjoy the hell out of your videos haha
I wish everyone was as constructively critical as you.
I wish everyone was as supportive & commending as you squire! What a refreshing change this little halo, this oasis of maturity is. I feel like I've just stepped out of a war zone and into a zen garden!! :D
"not my day... not my day!"
Matt, ur killing me bud!
you're in sunny California, canyon carving some random dude's trophy car!
I'm stuck in NYC, snow on the roads, track season out til mid March... with a brand new GT4 just sitting in a garage. "not MY day!"
Lol. 😎
Enjoy the car for what it is, not what it isn't; apples to oranges in this vid.
Man, what is going on here? I like Matt's reviews...& I hope he does make a good living doing this! We all wish we could be an automotive journalist for a living & driving some awesome cars for fun everyday! Keep smoking the tires!
I'm just hoping that E46 M3 gets on an episode.
It does, within the week :D
+Strudlez17 yeah 3 of them are coming up, I tried to get mine on the show too
6 years later and MF still a cnt in this onetake
Nice! It looks great too.
the last couple years I dreamt of having a 981 CGTS... a couple months ago I test drove one back to back with a 718S, both PDK. I ended up getting the 718S because of the extra torque, updated styling details and the new infotainment system. if the CGTS had been a manual that probably would've tipped me in its direction. I struggled with the decision for sure. I ended up dumping the 718S due to a strange feeling power delivery and got a Camaro SS 1LE which is more entertaining to drive and not used as a daily driver (or else I wouldn't be as happy with the switch). I still think this Cayman GTS is beautiful and sounds great. I don't think its worth the $85k that was being asked though. The 718S was probably worth the $85k but I just couldn't love it... "i'm so spoiled" lol.
lovely colour i love carrara white
I feel like you guys really bonded
Slight audio issue in this one, but thankfully we can still hear the Cayman very well
Wow. The power of Jerk runs deep in Matt
Really cool owner. Very realistic about his car.
400 to the wheel is definitely the sweet spot for a street car. Matt nailed it with that comment.
Another day, another damn Porsche. I can see now why you said you'd be stopping the One Takes soon, it seems as though i've already seen this video 5 or 6 times from you.
I am not going to comment about this owner.
why?
Vanneker I will, dude was fucking awkward and can tell one of those guys who's cocky cause they got some money. In other words your typical Porsche elite driver who thinks their Porsche makes their sick bigger
Jeffrey F As he plays modest, but leaves with a insult. Great example bud.
LMAO.
You found the guy weird - good for you. Stop spreading negativity and you won't get people like me schooling you.
What a beautiful car.
The passenger’s face “I don’t care” expression is hilarious
such a beautiful looking car. i like the look of this better then the gt4 and the 911
Matt is so comfortable in this car - on the limit right away.
Hey Matt which I'm debating one which one to get, what would you recommend BMW M4 or GT350?
Give Matt a break, he was honest. The owner was overly defensive. The fact is, you don't get much power for the price. All hail the 997tt!
guys. Matt is fully aware that he's spoiled. he mentions it all the time
Matt Farah was in one of my dreams recently, was pretty unexpected.
The 981 GTS is one incredible drivers car, the owner explained how this is not his daily - a 991 Carerra would be his pick if it was and Matt explained how any other Porsche, from his perspective, was better.
I love mine! So much fun on alpine roads in the summer but still very practical every day even in the snow like this week.
I don't understand the people complaining about this video really. If Matt is going to drive an almost stock car, obviously he'll be comparing it to the new version or modded versions.
Not wanting to jump in with the band, but yeah Matt you were rude to this guy for no reason! He does have a great car.
Just tried one of these out at the track here in Vegas. I was underwhelmed both by the motor and the grip. That was a very big surprise to me. My 911 Turbo S obviously has a lot more power but it also has a tremendous amount more grip and brake power. The 3.8L turbo actually revs out more... I was expecting the GTS to be more neutral and much quicker in transitions, but I did not find it to be so at all. Maybe I needed more time in it, maybe the tires and brakes were too heat cycled, I don`t know.
Two areas where Porsche detuned this car was power and grip. In stock setup it’s designed to be easier to drive and easy to control when losing grip. It makes you feel like a hero but hurts lap times. A stage 1 tune and racing alignment are necessary to get the most out of the chassis. Racing wheels, tires, and brakes also help a lot.
What a car!
Matt is that typical good ole American dude who compares every car on that V8s.....
Really don't understand why there's so much hate and dislikes on this video, I agree Matt wasn't as on point as he normally is and seemed off/negative. But the owner seemed fine to me & considering the high quality of most of the one takes I think we can forgive him for one not so great one! But this is the internet after all....
I was so excited for this one take when I saw what the car was (basically a dream car of mine) and then....
It’s a great car, just the review wasn’t...
@@watermelon2521 yup. It’s probably the worst video he’s done. Not hating, but he was clearly having a bad day or something when this was shot
5:19, yes he is but I still like him. Thanks Matt for sharing your opinion on this car.
Just like he said at the stop sign "not my day"
so much for reviewing the "Last Cayman ever"
Matt, as it turns out it's not the last of the naturally aspirated flat sixes Porsche is coming out this year 2020 with a new GTS called the GTS 4.0 with the return of the na flat 6 to the Cayman/Boxster line.
Yes.
Matt was having a bad day from the looks of it and how you responded to some things he said. Hope your doing well Matt.
he didn't talk enough about the car!? this is like his millionth Cayman video! What else is there to cover, apart from comparisons with the other Caymans he has driven? Matt, don't go on holidays anymore, people are clearly quite salty about your last one
I feel like people watched 2-3 minutes
of this video and decided they didn't like it and left a comment that isn't deserved. But that's the internet
Matt is most likely gonna be doing more cars on this day. So the next video I guess we're see if it was the owner and car, or if it's just Matt.
has matt changed the forward facing camera? it seems to show speed better now....or he was just going faster
Hit the nail on the head with 2nd being too long and 6th being too short. Well said owner.
Hm. I wasn't really triggered by this video. I think he was sharing his opinions and everyone needs to calm down.
Agreed 100%
+TheSmokingTire Matt, is there a one-take of that Fiesta ST (23 seconds in) coming? He's got the wheels, mudflaps, wing, and splitter that I want on my Fiesta ST; looks cool
