As a Bengals fan this guy broke my heart. He didn’t need to be a dirty player, he was a great football player. His instincts and ability to get the defense into the right play presnap made him an impact player. But he was a dirty, dirty player and it was that more than injures in my opinion that ended his career. His rep was so bad that refs would just state him down and wait for him to do something stupid (and he always did).
He had all the talent to be one of the best linebackers ever; too bad his head was screwed on wrong. He didn't have to be that far on or over the edge when he played however Bill Romanowski was just as bad as Burfict. It’s pretty egregious how the league allowed this sort of behaviour for so long. These fines and short suspensions are just slaps on the wrists to guys like this. I’m a track and field athlete, where if people get suspended for things (like doping violations), they miss something in the realm of 4 years. That’s a real deterrent, and those doping violations aren’t putting someone’s entire life at risk like Burfict’s play was. I think by the time he’s getting his third fine, players like this should be under review to be suspended for an entire season. After that, 2-4 years, and after that, permanent bans. Even then, he still has less to lose than the guys he’s taking shots at.

He would almost single-handedly shut down an opponent, then on 3rd and long, he'd have a stupid personal foul, give them a first down and an extra 15 yards, and the Sundevils would lose. As you cited, Burfict would dominate the game just as LT did for the Giants, except as you described, he would give the other team the extra yardage, they would score. and ASU would lose... This happened multiple times and when he left ASU I too was glad... but my pain was compounded because I was a Raiders fan, and we eventually acquired his "services." With Burfict's talent, it was amazing he wasn't even drafted -- but shows what an undisciplined and dirty player he was. And, I feel bad for the Bengals fans where Vontaze personally lost a playoff game for them...

While the hit probably contributed to AB's decline in mental health, the dude has always been unstable and doing shitty things. I live in Cincinnati and have actually worked closely with the Bengals team in the logistics department. The real shame of this if he (Burfict) had chosen another path I truly believe he could have gone down as one of the best inside linebackers in the history of the NFL.

Another thing not factored into what was essentially forfeited pay by Burfict was him falling off draft boards due to his benching in college and horrible combine performance. He would've possibly been a top 10 pick but ended up going undrafted entirely. He lost a lot of money on that first contract.

We both loved and hated him in Tempe, as he was so often both the most advantageous and detrimental player on the field for the Sun Devils. Incredible play followed right up with a dangerous and out of control one. We always had to hold our collective breath anytime an opposing player went out of bounds because there was a chance he would come out of nowhere and clean someone out. I actually met him one time while I was shooting a documentary on ASU, and he was, by far, the most intimidating of any of the players we had talked to. Really a great talent which was most apparent when seeing him play in person. Yet there were times I thought he might paralyze an opposing player or worse. Scary dude.

It’s pretty egregious how the league allowed this sort of behaviour for so long. These fines and short suspensions are just slaps on the wrists to guys like this. I’m a track and field athlete, where if people get suspended for things (like doping violations), they miss something in the realm of 4 years. That’s a real deterrent, and those doping violations aren’t putting someone’s entire life at risk like Burfict’s play was. I think by the time he’s getting his third fine, players like this should be under review to be suspended for an entire season. After that, 2-4 years, and after that, permanent bans. Even then, he still has less to lose than the guys he’s taking shots at.
Yet the NFL allows rapists and women beaters to have second and third chances…you know, since they are good at sports the rules don’t apply to them. Deshaun Watson, Tyreek hill ring a bell? NFL is full of garbage humans, like every other job.

As you cited, Burfict would dominate the game just as LT did for the Giants, except as you described, he would give the other team the extra yardage, they would score. and ASU would lose... This happened multiple times and when he left ASU I too was glad... but my pain was compounded because I was a Raiders fan, and we eventually acquired his "services." With Burfict's talent, it was amazing he wasn't even drafted -- but shows what an undisciplined and dirty player he was. And, I feel bad for the Bengals fans where Vontaze personally lost a playoff game for them...

We always had to hold our collective breath anytime an opposing player went out of bounds because there was a chance he would come out of nowhere and clean someone out. I actually met him one time while I was shooting a documentary on ASU, and he was, by far, the most intimidating of any of the players we had talked to. Really a great talent which was most apparent when seeing him play in person. Yet there were times I thought he might paralyze an opposing player or worse. Scary dude.
