- Wampler Tumnus (Is This A GREAT Overdrive?)
Is the Tumnus any good as an overdrive pedal? It's based on the famous (and STAGGERINGLY pricey) Klon Centaur. I've never tried one of those, so I can't say if the Tumnus is a good clone, but I can say if it's any good. One of the great things about the Wampler is that it's also a small guitar pedal, so it won't take much space on your pedalboard.
Anyway, let's check it out.
Enjoy!

i enjoy your reviews man...great playing and honest reactions to the gear...thanks!
I appreciate that!
Hey Elmo, this is off-topic for this video but I wanted to thank you for doing great and most importantly honest reviews, they helped a lot and I ended up ordering a beautiful black tele with an interesting brown shard-like pick-guard as my first electric guitar. Can’t wait to play it! 💯
Cool bananas :) Also, thank you for the kind words. Much appreciated.
your clean tone is my fuzz
The reason the high ends sound the way they do is due to how the circuit works. The gain control is actually a stacked pot, its a 2-in-1. One increases the gain of the signal overall, but the other one is a clean boost. You're actually sending out a layered signal of your overdriven tone and some amount of your clean tone straight from your pickups. It's why the Klon is so revered for it's pick dynamics, even though it's a hard clipping circuit like a DS-1 or a RAT.
You’re good brotha!👍😎
Love your custom strat, and your DT shirt, one of these days Need to get a scalloped neck guitar.
Cheers! Scallops are nice :)
Love my tumnus
lmao, i love delay! another great video Elmo
The pedal and your playing! Wow
Thanks!
You found the 'Hero' tone pretty easily :) Great review.
Thanks!
The Wampler Tumnus (larger one with 3 band EQ) is INDEED a great pedal!! Very much Soul Food but with the EQ. Very transparent and great range of useful tones.
Cool bananas :)
Don't have a Centaur or a Tumnus but I was lucky enough to catch a brand new Klon KTR last time they were actually put in production about a year ago... I haven't seen a new one since. Still a little ridiculously expensive at 280 US dollars (350-600 on the used market already!), but you know... It really is an amazing pedal. AFAIK the Tumnus is really, really close to the Klon, but some say the J. Rockett Archer is basically a perfect clone. Fantastic tones... I know the Klon was designed with blackface Fenders in mind, but boy does it make an excellent OD for Marshalls, too. Great demo, Elmo!
Cheers! Planning on trying an Archer and comparing it to the Tumnus.
I grabbed one of these and it plays nicely with a couple other overdrives for different gain stages.
Also I wanted that Devin Townsend space cat tshirt but they were sold out. And cheers to Ziltoid in the corner too.
Ziltoid for president :D
Sounds good! Pretty noisy, though. Started sounding a bit fuzz-like there, when wicked way up. But a lot of pedals _sound_ good. What did it _feel like_ to play? Did it make it easier to play? Or did it just change the sound and not the feel? I liked how it still sounded useful with the tone rolled down, it didn't get muddy, just darker. It was a little ice-picky with the tone dialed all the way up, but you _were_ playing a Strat through it, a bright guitar. Maybe humbuckers or P-90's wouldn't be so shrill. Or just don't turn the tone knob all the way up.
I'd say it's really good-sounding, especially for the price. I can understand their popularity.
Good demo video. I learned something. Maybe even something useful...
A excellent video as always. I agree with you - this is your channel and your video. And if you want reverb in the mix it is your perogative. Tough titty to all the haters. The Wampler sounded good if only a wee bit noisy at times. Perhaps a few angry bees or wasps are trapped in the box buzzing around in it.
This was FANTASTINEN!!!! 🎸🤘😝🤘🎸
Thanks man :)
Lol Its my party and I'll delay if I want to... Always wondered about these, enjoyed the review as always thank you.
My pleasure :)
I like the delay in the loop! :o)
:)
Sounds good to me. Although I couldn't quite tell if that level of hiss was normal at these gain levels or if this pedals a bit hissy?
I think it was made a bit worse by compression.
That Tumnus sounds great through the Plexi Elmo!. I'm now wondering how a Mosky Golden or Silver Horse compares to that Wampler? I remember their D 250X DOD clone sounded very good through your rig too. Love your videos by the way! :-)
Been thinking of buying a Golden Horse and trying it out.
And thanks for the kind words.
Excellant
Thank you :)
Wouldn't have occurred to me to match a Klon with a strat/Marshall/YJM pickups. Sounded good though!
Sure did.
I'm thinking to buy a tumnus, it's make any sense making him my main sound through my Vox ac 15, than boost him with xotic ep booster for lead guitar for example?
Sure
Hi Elmo! How are you? I think that this Comp is wery similar ti Boss SD1 don't you think so? And also your pick ups are 3 signal Monster mini humb.
I'm well, thanks. Not sure about the similarity to the SD-1. Would have to try them side by side. Not sure I understood that last bit.
@@MrPolevaulter of course!!
Not at all. The Tumnus has more bass and volume than an SD1. Different clipping too. It's meant to be a Klon variant.
Around 8:20 that's a nice tone and it's got some balls
Yep :)
I thought the pedal sounded great, but man was it noisy! Maybe because of your compressor.. It did sound really musical .. I've never played thru a Klon. I understand those all cost several million dollars though. 😂🤣..
Yeah, millions and millions :D
The compressor probably made the noise worse than it actually was.
Elmo does it feel like an amp in a box with touch response ?
I thought it responded well to touch, yeah.
Hey Elmo, so what is the Klon, like $4-5,000.00? The Klon is the Dumble of pedals, that Wampler sounds quite nice, but I generally like Wampler stuff.
Yeah, haven't tried the Klon, so can't really say how this compares.
Owning this pedal, does anyone sense a vibrato to it? It seems to produce its own cocked wah modulation. I'm wondering if the larger Tumnus Deluxe also does it
The tumnus is a silent pedal, No hiss at all so it must be something else on his rig like compression after the distortion?
Everything that adds distortion makes some kind of noise. How much depends on the rest of the rig. My Plexi already makes some noise, and the compressor I have on the speech mic makes it worse.
Please do the mxr sugar drive.
Probably at some point.
hey elmo loev ur videos can you do a comparrison of you harley benton 15w and bugerra 22w amps
I tried both, but sold the Bugera. Sorry :(
which one did you think was better overall and how loud was the clean channel of the harley benton before its breakup??
@@speedup58 Overall, the HB. The HB wasn't terribly loud though.
@@MrPolevaulter is it giggable
@@speedup58 Sure, as long as you don't play really loud metal. Stick a mic in front and you're good to go.
At some settings it sounds very fuzzy to my ears. Unfortunately, a Fuzz is perhaps the effect I hate the most on the planet.
Fair enough.
Agreed Paul Fuzz is rubbish unless cleaned up …
2:00 😂😂😂😂😂
:D
Dont get yourself into Treble Elmo! (A terrible joke in regards to calling it the "Tone" Control).
Sounds good - Wampler are my go-to guys for overdrive/distortion pedals :)
Haha :D
Dear "That Guy", Would you please do a version of this in Braille without Delay for the Deaf people? Be considerate. You're welcome...for this highly intelligent suggestion.
Haha :D
The noise is enough to end my interest in this pedal
The compressor probably made the noise worse than it actually was.
