In this project I will be showing you how to use the Home Assistant software in order to create an intruder alarm system for your home. The system will basically detect if the door gets opened without permission and then it will send out a notification to your smartphone. Along the way I will show you how to use a Raspberry Pi and ESP8266 in order to properly utilize the Home Assistant software. Let's get started!

Perhaps they watch it on double speed, and noticed either there is no alert on the switch being disabled, or that reed switches through a wooden door could be bypassed with magnetic visualization film to locate the magnet position -- a few dollars on amazon -- and a powerful magneton the other side of the door as it was opened?)
A better solution would be a lock, and if you feel you need some sensing on the door, perhaps a few ultrasonic range finders on the other side of the room. If any of them change more than a small amount, you'll know someone is messing with your room. (Using just one might be easy to bypass if someone took the door off the hinges. ) An advantage of using multiple is that you'd also be able to tell if someone walks in front of the sensors.

I really enjoyed this video, and agree that home assistant + esphome makes a great combination. I have water tank sensors using esphome, ultrasonic distance sensors to measure water level, and little OLED displays.
But, for this application it is probably overkill. Xiaomi Aqara zigbee door sensors last years on a single battery charge, are tiny, and interface to home assistant using either a small zigbee usb stick or external zigbee box. They are reliable, and trivial to deploy. They are even used on Aircon Louvers to feedback on/off state. You could do the holiday switch thing as a virtual switch within home assistant (or just disable the notification automation).

In the UK some of the electrical suppliers will give you a two part device that monitors your usage. One part is a current clamp that you clamp around the feed to your meter. It transmits by radio to a LCD display unit that can be in you kitchen or wherever. I think people get bored after a while and find no use for this gadget. You might be able to buy on on eBay. We had one where I work and it was discarded fairly soon.

One thing to consider with this setup: WiFi. Intruders can easily break this security setup with a 5$ pwnagotchi. You could improve that situation quite a bit by wiring at least the Pi using ethernet to the router. That way you could not only check for the open contact but also if the ESP is available or offline and send a notification if necessary.

But the ESP device will try to register itself as "name.local" and homeassistant will need to be able to resolve it (try ping first). In my case it worked surprisingly easily!

7:10 Note that if you put ANYTHING onto the internet, it's highly recommended to setup a reverse proxy which tells traffic where to go, the reason to use it is because you only need two ports exposed 80 and 443, everything else can remain secure behind your router and more importantly it limits any attacks to your network to just the reverse proxy itself rather than your server or other devices, even better if you use containers such as docker and you can even use Cloudflare for free to obfuscate your IP address from potential threats.
Also, thanks to NGINX Proxy Manager, this was made super easy to do fairly recently, I've been using it for my home appliances such as Nextcloud and I love it. Edit: Oh yeah one other benefit is that you can provide anything with SSH which doesn't have it built in, like say a personal wiki or an ESP8266/32.

They show them off at security expos all the time. It's a well known fact that wireless security isn't the best, and it's often not much cheaper either, and in the long run with replacing batteries sometimes more expensive. Hardwired while it takes more effort offers a magnitude higher of security with a little extra effort.

With the amount of wireless traffic we're surrounded by these days, it'd be going off every millisecond.
Just go all the way and get a spectrum analyzer, and then weep.

If you want to flash ESPHome devices directly, you have to connect it to your Raspberry Pi, since the ESPHome is essentially running on it.

This must have been said in some other comment but I can't find it so here I go.
You can use home assistant presence detection to enable disable the alarm. For example you can have the alarm disabled as soon as your phone connects to your home wifi and enabled when it disconnects.

Its great info, it will be better if you found esp32 for node with deep sleep capability, so we don't need to mesh around the cable for power supply in your door. its only need battery LifePo4 or 18650 type of battery.

The only problem - that criminal may turn down the power to your home externally, and such simple solution will be disabled. Many professional solutions use backup battery. And of course for the same reason they use cellular connectivity to server outside of the building (since when power is loss - no WiFi and maybe no local Internet).

You can always check for presence with your router. If your cellphone is not connected, then your alarm gets activated. Just do a "guest profile" that prevents triggering the alarm if you have guests and you are not home. 👍😊

you can attach the phone you installed HA app to your HA user to get a presence sensor. If your phone location matches the location you set in settings as your home then you will be marked as "Home". Else you're "Away". You can use that sensor instead of the toggle switch

  • @georgei2480
    @georgei2480 Před 3 lety

You can add a camera or something to go alongside the door sensor. knowing when someone brakes in is good, but it isn't worth anything if you don't know who it was.

Haha, once you start with ESPHome and Home Assitant you got crazy for a bit building sensors and automatic sensors. Most of those WIFI switches from big box hardware stores can have their firmware replaced with ESPHome (many without even opening the case by exploiting their update mechanism).

@GreatScott! You have to restart the ESP Home plugin for it to register a change in hardware devices since the update only occurs on process start. It can be a little annoying so I leave a dummy device in the port to keep it active.
