- So after a prior HUGE RANT post about this Console Accessory, Sony sent me a PlayStation Portal, in the hopes of changing my mind and giving me a chance to get a full feel of the capabilities of their latest PS5 Accessory.
This is a completely open and honest personal review, from unboxing to full capabilities, specifications, limitations - the best and worst things to consider.
Will it hold up in the handheld console market? is it worth £200? what specs does it have and what are the pro's and con's before buying it? JayNotion has you covered in this video! 😘

Getting thru more campaigns since I got this. In the evening I fire up the PS5 for some multiplayer, but during the day when Im at work, Im using the portal to get through some single player stuff.
I'm enjoying it too 👍🏻
Great review. I got this just because i wanted to game away from my set up in the house (bedroom). I am usually up before my wife and sometimes later to bed so i can play without interfering with her sleep. So far it works great for this situation. I haven’t tried it away from home yet. The screen is beautiful. It keeps me coming back for more playing games i haven’t touched in a while. Love that it has the dual sense with the haptics. Perfect accessory to the ps5
Glad you enjoyed the review and found it helpful 👍🏻 most definitely ideal for those situations and yes I agree the screen is amazing. It's a very welcome accessory around the home 😊
If you have original pulse headset connected to your ps5 they do work with the portal
Ahh good workaround, thanks for sharing 👍🏻
I specifically bought mine because:
I was sick in bed and just wanted to lay down and play games.
I recently moved my TV further from my bed and onto a desk and it’s hard to see unless I’m sitting at the desk now
I don’t want a TV on at night because it’s bright and a pain in the ass to dim and turn the brightness back up the next day
I don’t want to use a backbone on my phone because I use my phone as a phone and a PC and that already drains its battery enough
I haven’t put it down since I got it
I honestly thought it was the stupidest thing ever when I first heard about it until I realized I had some very niche problems that it could address. I sleep so much better without the TV now too
It will definitely tick boxes for some people and it sounds like you are one of those people as it fits your situation perfectly 👍🏻 glad you are enjoying it 😊
You pretty much listed also all of the same reasons I had for getting mine.
I love my portal, but you mentioning Caribbean islands ❤ thumbs up
The only place to be 😎👍🏻
Love your style!
❤️
You say it has to be in rest mode? It has to be fully on for it to work remotely, you can't leave it game whilst it's in rest mode as, when you have it in rest mode and turn on remote play the console wakes up.
Yep my mistake, you are right 👍🏻 I tested it a few times in different ways and you do need it fully fired up. Thanks for clarifying
Today everyone can be a youtuber, but you're the best!
You're too kind 😭😭
Idk why the portal is getting so many hate.. I love it, I haven’t touch my ps5 since i laid my hands on it. I’ve been playing more games also..
Some are disappointed with the features and the lack of innovation from Sony. I'm on the fence but do appreciate it fits the agenda for some people. I find it easier to pick up games I necessarily wouldn't have without it I must admit. Glad you are having a good time with it 👍🏻
It's cause people were expecting more. And they make some valid points. Cause yes I have one and I just lay in bed with it. I love it , but it could've been a successor to the ps vita so that's why a lot of people are upset.
@@abnormalnox couldn't have said it better 🙏🏻
I bought it for the same reason you might have also bought it
PS Portal is the Trophy hunters companion, especially if you don't have unlimited access to your gaming TV
It's become mine too 😁
Also factor in you play your existing PS game library and don't have to buy native games for it. The Portal doesn't have the internal components cost like the other handhelds. It could be an underrated genius move by Sony, especially if they enable cloud streaming direct to their servers
@@DRE2XL yeah I agree. Having one has changed my impression of it massively. Just a shame the audio features aren't up to scratch. Loving chipping away at the FF7 platinum trophy with mine currently though 😁
that's insane!! i'm happy to see this video
Appreciate you 👍🏻
Not sure what you mean on your review - where did Sony publicize that they were making a new dedicated gaming handheld? I'm pretty sure this product was always advertised as a game streaming device. The suggestion at around 18:36 into your video about having a new handheld with similar specs to a PS5 is honestly pure fantasy - no handheld on the market is that powerful and would have woeful battery life. An advantage to streaming is that this device can theoretically work with all future PS console improvements. For me the big letdowns are (in no particular order): Lack of Bluetooth compatibility, Wi-Fi 5 protocol (should be 6 at least), not having an OLED screen with a higher refresh rate. However, this would have warranted a higher price point and people are already balking at £200 for this.. Your review should also really go into some degree of detail regarding Wi-Fi setup and how that is configured/optimized, as ultimately this is the determining factor on how well it works for people.
Thanks for the comment and feedback 👍🏻 they mentioned in last year's summer state of play that they were delivering a handheld gaming console that "also has streaming capabilities" not "a handheld streaming device" I was also pointing out during the theme of the review that this could have had much more potential and that I felt they were strong-arming customers into buying their other products i.e. Sony Link and no Bluetooth, the only products to have this capability are the new upcoming pulse headset and buds. I beg to differ, a Rog Ally, Steam Deck and even the new Lenovo model being developed would be able to match in most scenarios. Agree re the WiFi, now that your comment is here I can shout about it in future videos so people are aware re the WiFi scenario too. That's what I was getting at, we got bare bones but they have the firepower to give us much more. I get the streaming side but there are already means to do that at the moment re backbone accessories, so what are they giving us here beyond a nice controller and shiny screen is my point. Hopefully we can confirm future rumours of a handheld Vita or PSP revamp 🙏🏻 one can dream! Appreciate your comment though
@@JayNotion Share a link to this State of Play.
The portal was just a rumour for ages and when they did announce it, it was always a streaming device
Great video!
Thank you 👍🏻
Can’t I use my current ps5 head phones with the dongle ?
Unfortunately no. If you want to use the original pulse headset headphones you can only connect to the portal via an Aux Cable. Only the new pulse elite headset will connect to it wirelessly via the PS Link Software (currently an unboxing of this on my channel front page). Alternatively you can buy the PS Buds, but they are expensive and not worth it IMO.
You can if you’re within range of your PS5. So if you’re playing around the house your current headphones will work fine because the audio will come from the PS5. Away from home, no they won’t work.
i might need to get this
You would appreciate it bro 👍🏻
🤣🤣 im on the edge of my seat, i remember when you were fuming about this!! "Its an accessory" I'm crying bro!! 🤣🤣
I should have put an accessory counter in for how many times I said it's an accessory not a console 😂😂😂
@@JayNotion bro that would've been funny af 🤣🤣🤣
Great vid bro, for the whole cost a steamdeck is a far better option.
💯. If people aren't assed about the audio I would say for some it would be worth 200 quid. Other than that the cost of all the other bits a steam deck or rog Ally is much better in terms of all options not just audio 😎
@@JayNotion there are better options but it's only an accessory 🤣
@@TheVman42 you know it by now bro 🤣🤣
For the whole cost? Do you mean the combined cost of a PS5 and Portal? Thats a stupid comparisson.
If I chose a steam deck, instead of a PS5 I wouldnt be able to play PS5 games.
This is an accessory for people who already own a PS5. If you own a PS5, Portal is a cheaper option for someone who only wants remote play.
If you want a portable PC too, then sure, get a steam deck.
I just want to play thePS5 games that I already own on the go.
Portal is cheaper than a steam deck
More convenient, comfortable and bigger screen than using controller like the Backbone, or dual sense with my phone.
At the end of the day, remote play is a great feature, and its great we have so many choices on how we want to use it.
It CAN connect to PS4
Unfortunately it can't. It's a PS5 accessory and a quick Google search confirms it doesn't work for PS4. Something they might patch later on though.
What is fifa like on it?
Smooth as silk 😁 online may lag here and there but the overall experience depends on your internet connection and speeds 👍🏻
@JayNotion so say I take it abroad with me, Greece for example and I sign into their WiFi through my phone can I then hotspot my phone to the portal and play?
@@user-jw8tq2jj4r yes that will work. You just have to ensure your PS5 is either on or in rest mode at home before you leave 👍🏻
You will NEVER see another PS vita 😂
You really need to let that go. Handhelds are too under powered, games aren’t optimized to run on them properly and battery life is too short.
Listen, a man can dream alright 😂
Ahh this is INCREDIBLE!
Thank you my friend
Confused you are using spawnpoint footage yet he gave it a good review. It works well when hard wired its terrible over wifi for anyone thinking of getting one.
Just used some footage to cover the additional voiceover I did, not sure what's confusing about that. Works well over WiFi for me, not great on intense MP games like COD though. Each experience will be different for different people I guess
The PS5 is not packaged well at all, just a few pieces of junky cardboard
The PS5 yeah, but this is the Portal 😏
I agree 😂. Its the same crappy packaging as the backbone i have both of them
@@DoritosResidue steady on with the box loving guys 🤣
@@JayNotion dick in a box😆
😂😂😂😂
Sony sent you a copy of a handheld 😅
Sure did, wouldn't have bought it otherwise 😏
