I know this is a comedy sketch but this can actually happen in real life. My father ran a hotel in Greece and one of our visitors was a charming guy in his late 70's travelling with his nurse. We were sitting together having dinner on a crowded terrace overlooking the sea. He was telling me of his earlier life when he used to own the imperial hotel by lake Bled but was chased out the country during a revolution and had to leave with nothing. Then in his 70's the country repaid him millions for what had been taken off him but what do you spend money on at that age? Needless to say his nurse looked like a playboy centrefold. We had a pleasant time sipping wine and trading stories while looking out at the view but during another story he just slumped. His nurse checked him and confirmed he'd died. This obviously left us with an issue of how to deal with a dead body in a crowded restaurant. We ended up calling in a Greek bouzouki band who concentrated the people perfectly while we carried the poor chap back to his room. I must admit, if I had to chose a way to go, then that would be it

I have seen this SO many times and I still laugh my ass off EVERY TIME; I just noticed the "confused, "this guy is out of his mind!!" expressions" on the faces of Mr. Lehman's colleagues this time. All Done SO well; I simple things but they add SO much to this scene, excellent acting, all in all...

I dont remember why they were moving the body around in this episode. Once they realized he hadn't eaten the kippers, its no longer their fault but they're acting like they're trying not to get caught with a suspicious body.

English farce....the harder they try to dissolve a situation, the worse the situation becomes....which makes them try harder and so it goes on. English farce is a theatrical genre....done well is is hysterically funny....done badly it looks contrived and cringe making.

Sybil told Basil to get the body into the office till the undertakers came. Which was terrible advice, cause you never move a body, you leave it where it is.

John Cleese talked quite a bit about this scene in the 1990s VHS releases of Fawlty Towers, which included a number of candid interviews with Cleese on the production of this series. John mentioned that he thought that this scene could have been "tightened" up a bit as he thought it wasn't immediately obvious to the viewer that Fawlty mistook Leeman's three business colleagues as undertakers/funeral directors here to collect a cadaver. Cleese also talked about the necessity of having a smaller man (in this case actor Derek Royle) so that he could be easily carried around since he's a corpse for most of the episode. Cleese also mentioned that the original plan was for a different ending, where the identical twin brother of the deceased would show up and Basil would hurl abuse at him. Cleese said that he and Booth couldn't go with this plan, as there was no way for Fawlty to break the news to a loved one that Leeman had died (note that it was Sybil who broke this news to Leeman's three colleagues - great call here it would be impossibly awkward for Basil Fawlty to act compassionately in delivering this heavy news). Note that it was also Polly who called the undertaker earlier in the episode ("I'm afraid somebody's died during the night") - again, it would appear very out of character for Basil to even place this phone call.
Nonetheless, "Kipper and the Corpse" is an outstanding episode, and probably my third favourite of the entire series (behind only "The Germans" and "Basil the Rat").
