The DISTINCT TRIBE of Sahara - TUAREG

  • Discover the distinct Tuareg tribe of Sahara, a progressive society where women enjoy great freedom. The Tuareg inhabit the Saharan regions of North Africa - Niger, Mali, Libya, Algeria and Burkina Faso. The Tuareg have maintained their way of life for centuries, crossing from one side of the world's largest desert. Although most Tuareg now practice some degree of Islam resulting from the teachings of the great prophet El Maghili from the early 16th century - they are not considered Arabic. They have preserved many pre-Islamic traditions and do not strictly follow many Islamic rituals. Among the Tuareg the women have a great freedom and participate in family and tribal decisions. Descent and inheritance are both through the maternal line.

The good thing is that unlike the majority of societies, they have better treatment of women's dignity by giving them their right to chose what is better for themselves. In other words, they don't allow the man to own and control them like animals, and materials, or to look after, and consider them like kids. Their nomadic life contradicts the level of their advanced social life.
To some extent, the right of marriage in Tuareg women seems to have similarity with the tribe of Kunama women in Eritrea. In the Kunama culture, when a girl showed the sign of adulthood, her family would make a single room cottage nearby their residence, and allow the girl to live there alone. After this, any man interested in the girl can enter into the girl's cottage. If the girl likes the man, the next step would be to send the man's families to talk with the girl's parents and arrange a formal marriage. This type of respect of women is not even common in the popular cultures, and scientifically and technologically advanced societies.

As a Taureg, I can say that there is a lot of misunderstanding of the Tuareg culture in this video. First of all, the Tuareg are not a tribe, they are a NATION. Secondly, there is a tendency in the media to present the Tuareg people as being mysterious, without paying any attention to the political and economic grievances they have experienced since the beginning of the French colonial era in the late 19th century. Thirdly, the Tuareg women enjoy their full rights. However, there is a lot of exaggeration in the video regarding women's social status in Tuareg society.

Also in the ancient kanarian society, women had a superior status. Only from hers depended the lineage of nobility or royalty. I come from a tribal community as well. From the Pacific islands where only women have the right to own land. Lands are passed down from the mother to her daughters & so on. Clan is also a major part in my tribal culture. We only obtain our clans through our mothers. So therefore if there are no more women then that is the end of the line. Also through the women is where the chief or king is born. They play a very very important part in decision making by the chiefs & kings meaning if they dont agree they have every right to change the decisions made by the chiefs or kings. So basically women are on top here.
Also as christians we have also ignored the part where the bible says that men are the head of the family. In my culture its the women.

The Tuaregs were nomads and the men would go off to trade or fight and ma N y times NOR come back. Having lots of lovers gives these women options when there husbands do not come back. This why the tents and animals stay in her possession. It makes her more attractive to a man. Instead of trying to find a new man with no possessions and children in tow. I hate this kind of Western arrogance!
