no I just disagree most music in western society only uses major, melodic minor, harmonic maj/minor and double harmonic maj/minor and neopolotin scales, yes the messian are there too but we in the West have barley scratched the surface there is so much more out there that needs to be explored if we wanna say how many diatonic 7 notemodes there are there's be about 431 we are stuck in the first 50 or so ,not to take away at all his knowlage is very profound

It's videos like this that first attracted me to this channel when I first discovered it, probably about five years ago. Tons of information, zero waffle. The speed that Rick applies what's in his mind to the fretboard is totally amazing. Especially with such complex chords and patterns. I've been playing guitar for about 40 years and when I see Rick effortlessly soloing & using scales like the ones in this video, it lets me know just how much I don't know about guitar and how much there still is to learn. "The Night Window" is awesome. Christian Williams used it on his video diary of solo sailing the Pacific as he arrived in Hawaii. The music and majestic rolling sea as land came into sight choked me up.
The Night Window is goosebumps inducing especially coupled with Roger Deakins visuals. It's like the music becomes symbiotic with the light movements.

AND THEN it ties in to the commercial for his books! all in 7 minutes. Rick, you are on a roll. A... Rickroll so to speak.
I absolutely LOVE this scale. I only use it occasionally when I want to play something striking over a dominant chord. Itâs a mode of harmonic minor, but I never even learned harmonic minor! Lol! I just learned this mode because it appealed so much to me.
yeah my guitar teacher (a cool dude who sold all his stuff to travel to the USA to study at GIT) around nearly 30 yrs ago told me, when I was around 14 "thats the scale the metal kids like most" (E Harmonic Minor 5 (HM5 Scale)). Being such a kid myself he had me listening maybe thats why I seem to remember that day so vividly, I know exactly where I was sitting when I got to know that scale :) He showed me the Harmonic Minor Scale first and once you now it, you only need to start at the 5th.. I didnt know it under the name phrygian dominant (which I also find a bit misleading because in none of the modes you have that of a large intervall like in the harmonic minor scale). I've always liked the harmonic minor scale ever since but I dont think it's much of a secret to metal players :)
Harmonic minor is Natural Minor with a sharp 7th I think

@@Cosmefulanito2812 Harmonic Minor, like you said has the 7th raised a semitone. Natural Minor is the same as the Aeolian Mode ... lowered 6th and 7th note. Melodic Minor has a raised 6th an 7th note while ascending up the scale and lowers the 6th and 7th note in a descending pattern.
@@Cosmefulanito2812 and you take harmonic minor and use the 5. As your root note, than you've got that scale. For example start with E on your A harmonic minor. It's the same principle from which you can create all modes out of the major, ionian, scale..
2:13 to 2:23 reminds me of the 2001: A Space Odyssey âstar gate sequenceâ with the ominous chords and that feeling of slowly moving when you see the different colored canyons

Probably my all-time favourite scale. It'll never not sound cool, no matter style of the music it can sound dark and evil like in metal or majestic as in Rick's film score-esque example. Incredibly versatile and just cool
Yeah, we also use it in Middle Eastern Music, it's Maqam Hijaz, but it's used in a rather different way, not with polyphony, but with monophony and rhythms that are not common to Western Europe.
Also, different melismatic colorings of compositions.
You can actually have a totally different mode if you use it with radically different musical vocabulary, just like Spanish and Greek, which have nearly identical phonemes, but very different vocabulary.
This channel makes me love music more and in-depth

Back in the early 1990s, I was studying music at York University in Toronto. I had a professor named Steven Otto that opened our minds and ears to World Music. In some Middle Eastern cultures, the Phrygian Major or Phrygian Dominant scale is known by the name "Hejaz" (I don't remember anything more about the history of it though). He was also greatly into Greek Folk music which uses quite a few hexatonic scales similar to the Middle and Far East, but also filled with tons of multi-metered and odd metered arrangements. Phil X would probably have much more information about that to discuss.
In greece I went into a record store with an I dont give up so easy sales person. He made me buy a record of a greek guitar player named Takis Barberis called Porto Kayo. I recommend this to everyone who wants to try greek music mixed with middle east vibes in a kind of smoth instrumental jazz style.

Yup. Just commented in another post on this name of it. In Turkish, it's spelled 'hicaz,' & pronounced the same way.
Correct. That's "Hejaz" scale (except the 7th degree, which should be a major as well) and movie soundtrack composers taught us when a desert scene comes up this scale enters. It's interesting Rick doesn't know this and showcased the music inappropriately showing us castles from Northern Europe and some rocket take offs. :D :D
@@alpyre , Hicaz has a minor 7th (m2, M3, m6, m7, p4, p5). Some regions may have a quarter tone on the 3rd. I don't know the name of the scale in maqaam, but if you have min 2, maj 3, min 6, maj 7 in Indian classical raga, it is called 'bhairav.'
Phrygian major/dominant = 5th mode of G harmonic minor. Rick, would be great to review "what are modes?" and emphasize that each of the 3 foundational scales (major, harmonic minor, melodic minor) generate their own set of 7 modes, and the harmonizations of each scale as triads and 7th chords go with each mode.
My biggest current obsession / woodshed activity is working on the altered scale, i.e. 7th mode of melodic minor, but I really like some of the other modes of that scale too, e.g. "lydian dominant" etc

Many people here are telling that this is an arabic scale and I believe it is rather an ancient Mediterranean scale. You can hear it in folk songs from Mahgrib and Spain but also in Turkey, Greece, Lebanon and so... Personally it brings me back to those old traditional songs that my grandma sang to me. She came from the border between Castilla y LeĂłn (Spain) and Portugal, and in that remote, harsh and poor place there have never been arabs from Arabia but only Berbers from Northern Africa. Anyway, it's a curious this link between my grandma and Tool!

And now I must write the short story based on the two vignettes you shared to demonstrate the scale. There was something Cyberpunk/The Traveler-ish about the final segment, getting out of the city and off of the grid, hopefully before the prescient dream came to pass - but only sunrise would illuminate the truth.
Hearing the scale/mode combined with video helps convey the mood they embody. Nice to see this kind of video again from Rick. I enjoyed them in the early days of the Channel.
I learned the Phrygian Dominant mode with the song Egyptian Danza when Tour De Force Live came out.
To this day , that version of that song is my favorite Phrygian Dominant song of all time, but Mr Beatoâs riffage in this video comes a close 2nd. Holy crap that was sweet!
To be honest I didnât know what mode it was back then. I only took 2 guitar lessons, and learned the Chords to Josie , and and the first few bars of Egyptian Danza, but years later learned my modes, including the harmonic minor modes like this one⊠Some of them are hard to use in a way that is enjoyable. This one and the Locrian Harmonic Minor mode (forget what itâs called) are the only two that I really got into and enjoyed.

I love how this scale is sprinkled into parts of "Little Light of Love" from The Fifth Element movie soundtrack. While that song is primarily in Mixolydian mode, every once in a while the song sprinkles in a minor 2nd. Those sprinkles act as a teaser for the chorus melody, which we don't hear in full until the end of the song (which I believe is sung by Milla Jovovich?). Structurally, I think it's a pretty clever way to play with the Phrygian Major/Phrygian Dominant sound without using that as the primary mode of the song. It makes the chorus stand out, I think. Take a listen (or listen to it again) after watching Rick's video. đ

Also, this scale comes into Western music from the Arabic and Ottoman modal traditional (through Maghreb/Spain and Anatolia) where it's known as Maqam Hijaz/Hicaz You can raise the 6th degree sometimes which is nice giving a Rast flavor
If you listen to Maynards vocals in many Tool songs, they have an almost "call to prayer" quality to them.
Yes I think he should have mentioned that. My own guitar piece (in DADGAD) with this scale is rhythmically a blend of northern Morocco (where I live) and Spain (which I can see from my window). It sounds almost traditional to these parts, but play the riff with distortion on and it's instant heavy-metal...

They played the Grudge, the pot and Hooker with a penis the same night, im pretty sure everyone wanted to hear this (maybe less true for HWAP but still). Clicked in for the Tool bait. Rick's sample composition as an example, sounded like a finished production waiting for a movie! Brilliant. Playing through chords of Phrygian reminded me of some early Metric tracks as well.

This is one of the most common modes in middle eastern music. It's called hijaz / humayun (with various spellings) in Arabic, Turkish, and Greek music. It also has many options for microtuning, most commonly lowering the 3rd by a comma (~20cents), raising the 2nd by a comma, and the sixth moving between a slightly high minor 6th and slightly low major 6th. super expressive...

He said the guitar actually has a design flaw and the bridge was actually installed closer then it should be and thatâs why he loves the sound so much! When I was younger and dabbled in classical guitar I listened to allot of flamenco/Iberian music so this scale is one of the most familiar to me.

Other names for this scale: Harmonic Minor starting on the fifth, Dominant 7 b9.
You're right about the b6! Maybe I was thinking backwards, it's a scale often used playing over a a Dom7b9 chord.

Really cool piece. Kind of reminds me of the Hanz Zimmer soundtrack in Dune. "Leaving Caladan" is a track in Dune that I think also uses this exact scale (D phrygian dominant).
Edit: I went back to listen to it and not all of it uses phrygian dominant, there's a lot of double harmonic major in there (which is the same scale but with major 7th instead of a b7).
There were parts of it that made me think of Stargate...

I love that track. I however don't think it's Phrygian mode. It is in an Hindustani classical scale called Ahir Bhairav which is Major b2 b6 (flat 2nd and 6th) or Phrygian mode with sharp 3rd and 7th?
@@SohamJambhekar You're right I went back to listen to it and most of the track seems to be in D double harmonic major, which is basically phrygian dominant but with a major 7th instead of a b7 (it does eventually go to a C minor chord which uses the flat 7 though so it's kind of a mix).

46 and 2 is probably my single most favorite song of all time. Killer guitar lick, powerful driving rhythm and existentially complex and philosophical lyrics. Plus it's a great song to do the horizontal mambo too with a constant pulsing beat.
I've seen Dream Theater's "Home" mentioned by some; there's another riff that preceded both Tool and DT by decades: Let There Be More Light by Pink Floyd. The intro is quite similar.

As someone who's ethnically from the 'East', it's interesting to me how often this scale (frequently featured in Indian, Arab, Jewish, Persian music) is used to create a sense of foreboding, horror, etc in Western cinema.
So I really appreciated your film score and visuals, associating the scale with how it sounds to my 'oriental' ears - awe-inspiring, ruminative and not 'evil' at all.
I never found it to be evil sounding. I get a sense of awe or adventure vibe from it.

Started playing guitar because of Adam Jones. I've been listening to Tool since 1993 and started playing guitar myself in 1997. Since then I've been replaying at least 1 Tool song every day. I can definitely say that I have mastered all Tool songs perfectly. :) Recently had my 25 year anniversary.
Saw them live for the first time in Cologne in May 2022. In general, I've never been to any concert by any band before.
A mental disorder had previously prevented me from doing so. :(

I don't know if any one here is familiar with Drum Corp International (basically athletic competitive marching band) but The Bluecoats 2016 show "Downside Up" was dominantly written in this key. No pun intended đ they won the gold medal that year and is one of the best shows in modern Drum Corp history. Definitely worth a watch
