  • Built a Traditions Percussion Blunderbuss. Used some three sizes of screwdrivers (all flathead), a drill with bits, some sandpaper, and some epoxy which was needed because I overdrilled one hole.
Bluing was easy by just following the instructions with the Birchwood Casey Bluing kit. The key to staining is to put on the stain with the cotton balls, then wipe off excess with paper towels because it will come out way too dark if you don't wipe off the towels.
Fitting was actually very easy. Everything fit with the except of the front hole of the locking mecanism which was drilled too small and I overdrilled it when I tried to enlarge it. The front of the wood where the sidelock mechanism was also too tight, so I had to use a dremel to open it up. My son was easily able to put everything together by himself and he narrates the actual assembly.
    Tools and materials:
    3 screwdrivers
    Drill with bits
    Dremel
    Sandpaper
    Stain
    Casey's Blueing
Cotton balls for bluing and stain

Would love to own one of these, looks incredible fun and simple to clean after shooting. Do you have any recommendations for the powder charge or is there any instruction manual that tells you?

I actually have not had a chance to shoot it because I have been out of the country since I built it, but I plan to research it and shoot it when I get home again. Expect to see a video in around a month's time. I will document how things work.

@@oddrocket2743 thanks, you’re awsome. I don’t usually collect black powder firearms as they don’t always fit my interests but the simplicity of this piece is just genius. I almost feel that the Blunder Buss was a alternate idea to firing multiple rounds at a time (before it became the shotgun), rather than the added complexity of the machine gun, which wasn’t able to even be produced because of it. Would have cool if Americans used this weapon often for close quarter ambush’s against the British during the revolutionary war.

How do you choose to wad the powder and shot? Have you tried cotton balls? Have you constructed any canisters or Sabots to hold the shot together better for further distances?

I have not been able to fire it because work has kept me too busy and the holidays have take up the rest of the time, but I plan to use cotton wads at first and also try to make some paper cups to hold the shot.

My Blunderbuss is a proper flintlock, the best wadding you can use is paper wasp nest, cut into discs the right caliber, back in the day they often just used a wad of tow,
