Making "Crystal Wave" Cold Process/Translucent Hybrid Soap from Scratch

  • My favorite cold process soap recipe was poured into soapncrafts' awesomely easy crystal clear soap from scratch recipe to explore hybrid soap possibilities. You can watch their well done video (BRAVO soapncrafts) and fantastic recipe instructions here: "Make Crystal Clear Soap in Less than 10 minutes" by soapncrafts- • Make Crystal Clear Soa... . While I think that translucent soap is pretty, I have found that I love using cold process soap far more because of the moisturizing qualities and the fragrance flexibility. But I think that hybrids can provide the best of both worlds! That is what I begin to explore in this video. This entire soap took me less than 20 minutes to make and it is made with half my Shea butter silk recipe and half translucent soap made from scratch. The soap pH was 10 after about 30 hours after pouring the soap and I did not put this in the oven at all after pouring. I was curious to see how the different soaps would combine and was pleasantly surprised at how well they seem to fuse together while at the same time maintaining their own properties and place. You’ll see what I mean. See Chapter 8 (of my free e-book4!) for more information about this soap:

    I like the ease of making this clear soap from scratch, but after a few months of this soap curing, I find it to be too wet and it did shrink quite a bit. I personally prefer the translucent soap from the recipe I show in this video : ( czcams.com/video/3nTXQb2guec/video.html )which is not as clear, but doesn't have the sweating problem. Lastly, I would suggest looking at this video (czcams.com/video/Ka6PBjfLXoI/video.html ) for making a superior crystal wave soap using Melt and Pour and Salted Cold process soap.

      Lol thank you Eryl💝 When I used to write papers in school and at work it was unthinkable not to give credit where it was due. But you are right that the practice is not so common on CZcams. One time I ran across a pretty soap and left a comment on a job well done. The soap maker told me that I should try the technique sometime. The funny thing is that I was the one who invented that particular technique many years before, and had the oldest video on the technique.

      So glad you like it! This particular clear soap is great if you plan to use it fairly soon after making it. However, it shrinks a lot faster and more than cold process soap, so the hybrid will eventually look a bit odd if you know what I mean. Thanks so much for your lovely comment, Tser💝

    • @FromGracetoYou
      @FromGracetoYou  Před 3 lety

      Hi Michele! I am really glad you couldn't get it because it would have been the wrong alcohol!! The recipe calls for 99% alcohol and I just use the cheapest grain alcohol from the local liquor store (190 Proof is what I used) . This clear soap is not a cheap recipe. I am beginning to experiment with melt and pour soap and other recipes in place of the recipe here. So you might want to wait a bit in case I come up with a better clear soap alternative. But if you make it, use 190 proof grain alcohol. I also use it in my hand sanitizer. I like that it doesn't have that awful smell of rubbing alcohol.

      Thank you for your great feedback, Micol💝 🤗 It really is striking in person and the soap is even more clear when you use it under water. The clear soap melts faster than the cold process soap, which is only a small problem in my opinion, but for this reason I haven't settled on this recipe just yet. It IS so easy to make and clear but it does melt quickly and shrink (not sure how much it will shrink compared to the cold process yet)- I will try using it in different ways. But I also plan to try other translucent recipes and even organic melt and pour soap over time.

      Thank you Frei Raum💝 🤗 So far, after a couple of days, the translucent soap has shrunk a little more than the cold process soap shea recipe. I can feel a small line along the face. I will be interested to see how much difference there will be after a month or so. I do hope to share future experiments with you:)

    • @Frei_Raum
      @Frei_Raum Před 3 lety +1

      @@FromGracetoYou When I read in the video description you linked for us, that the clear soap is high in water and will shrink a lot, I thought that there will be a difference between the CP and the clear soap.
      I once had that with a soap I called "Latte Macchiato". I knew the fragrance would change the colour to brown. So I put lots of titaniumdioxide mixed in water to the milk foam phase because I wanted it to be white. The result was a much more shrunken "Milk foam" than the rest of the Latte. It looked weird :'D

    • @FromGracetoYou
      @FromGracetoYou  Před 3 lety

      Haha that is a great story and I understand your point. I knew that the recipe would shrink from the description too, but I want to see for myself how much and weigh that against how easy the soap is to make, and it's clarity versus the alternatives. I suppose it is all about tradeoffs. I am planning to try other translucent recipes and even clear, organic melt and pour soap. My goal is to use translucency as part of the art while incorporating wonderful moisturizing soap that I like to use on my skin. I just turned my attention back towards using translucent soap in soap art and have a LONG way to go lol. Thank you for your useful comment, Frei Raum💝 🤗

    • @Frei_Raum
      @Frei_Raum Před 3 lety +1

      @@FromGracetoYou Ja, you are right, it IS all about tradeoffs. Maybe it's possible to increase the amount of water in the CP so it will shrink the same way as the clear soap.
      Either way I really look forward to your further experiments combining these two kinds of soap. Have much fun with it!

    • @FromGracetoYou
      @FromGracetoYou  Před 3 lety

      Thank you, Frei Raum! That is an interesting idea. I might try it sometime, but I have discovered that more water usually makes my soap trace much faster. I might be able to learn how to adjust my mixing to compensate for that however. So far, the clear soap shrinking has not been too much compared to the cold process in the curing soaps, but the clear soap does melt faster when I use it.

      Hi Deborah!💝I am not sure what you are asking🤗 This soap is half my usual shea butter cold process soap recipe and half soapncraft's "clear soap" recipe. It is pretty clear-I'd say it is the clearest I've found that can be made from scratch. I am working on a video now where I use clear melt and pour that I bought-it is said to be the clearest on the market and it is pretty clear. I am experimenting with various clear/translucent soaps now. I plan to try other recipes from scratch over time as well.
