  • Wade Mainer, a legendary pioneer of bluegrass, and a member of the bluegrass hall of fame, sings the touching and inspiring song, "ring on my hand." Alfred and Dorothy Miller wrote the song about Dorothy's brother Bruce and his wife Olive. Bruce, as a soldier coming home from world war 2, did not have enough money to buy his bride a ring when they got married. As the years past, their love was all they needed. However, after Bruce was diagnosed with cancer, he bought his wife a wedding ring and gave it to her on his death bed.

I was lucky enough to meet Wade and Julia in 1998 in North Carolina and West Virginia. Wade was a great gentleman, and Julia is a fine lady.

I miss Uncle Wade and Aunt Julia more than most folks could ever know. He use to come to the family reunions in Weaverville, N.C. until he was too weak to make the trip from Flint Mi. He would bring his world famous Banjo and she her guitar and sit and play with anyone who had brought or could borrow an instrument. I would bring my upright bass guitar or my electric bass and sit in on some of the songs. He and she are missed by so many folks and still loved by so many more.

I remember seeing him and Julia play at a family reunions over 20 years ago. He was my grandfathers uncle. He told a story about Julia dropping ice cream in the presidents wife’s lap I think. I could have that wrong. I was just a kid at the time and didn’t realize the significance of seeing them play.

Wade and Julia Mainer attended the same church I went too when I was little. I loved the whole Mainer family and always looked forward to the times when they would sing. Julia could never get through those old gospel songs without getting emotional. I miss them.

Sadly (for me) I grew up in Flint in the 70's and 80's as a fiddle player and had never heard of Wade until recently. My heart goes out for the families loss. What a beautiful heirloom legacy Wade leaves the world behind.in this video.

Wow, this was really amazing to see and hear Mr Mainer doing a wonderful job at such a high age. May he rest in peace, and I hope that he and J.E. Mainer's influence on old time/bluegrass music will not be forgotten.

Sir, I am Argentine from Buenos Aires, I don't know English. There are also no lyrics on the internet for this beautiful song by Wade and Julia, it would be very annoying when he can write the lyrics for me and I can translate them. by this means 🙌🙏

      WADE & JULIA MAINER
      RING ON MY HAND
      by Alfred and Dorothy Miller
A soldier came home from World War Two
To marry his sweetheart whom he loved so true
She Had no ring to go on her hand
‘Said I’ll buy you one as soon as I can
They toiled upon their [kindley] land
good times or bad she stood by her man
she had no ring when she was old
Still loving her man with a heart of gold
The children grew as the time went by
Gotta buy you a ring before I die
He was so sick he could hardly stand
But he bought her a ring for her wrinkled hand.
She buried him in the Tennessee Hills
‘Neath blue sky so solid and still
Some times at night she could hear him say
We’ll be together again some day.
      [unofficial transcription by PVC]
