Is the infamous irohazaka jump actually possible, or is it initial d’s biggest gimmick?
I had never attempted the jump before, so firstly I needed to see if drivers were actually pulling this move out of the metaphorical bag. But, I found something pretty strange.
There are plenty of videos of the jump being performed, but they never actually show the jump in one action. It’s always the lead up, then a cut to the jump. So, why is this? Is it too difficult for even the best drivers to perform?
To find out the answer, I’d need to try it out myself.
I'm sure most of you know what the irohzaka jump, but if not, let me give you a quick rundown..
the irohzaka jump is the term for a driving technique used in initial d, in which a driver used to overtake an opponent by jumping off the road, onto the over side of a hairpin.
I've had a lot of suggestions to make a video on the irohzaka jump for assetto corsa, but honestly, I had never tried it myself. I had only semi learned irohzaka about A month prior, I never once thought to try and jump off a ledge.
So I went on a little side mission to try and find if anyone else had made a tutorial on it, but surprise surprise, there weren't any. I'll be teaching you how to do it at the end of the video, don't worry.
There were some cinematic videos of the jump, however, like this one, or this one. But there's one thing missing from them, they never show the jump in one action. It's always the leadup, then a low down shot of them jumping.
Well, that got me thinking, why is that? And, with all the suggestions I got to make a tutorial on it, I knew I had to try it. But, there was an issue. You would think the irohazaka jump in assetto corsa would be relatively simple right? Just chuck your car off a ledge and hope for the best. Well, that assumption is wrong. REally wrong. This jump broke me. Intellectually, emotionally. It just destroyed me, and I want to tell you the journey that I’ve been through, attempting to learn it so I could teach it to you guys.
I loaded up ek irohzaka in the trusty mister 2 show shot of mr2 badge and set off down the snaking slope in an attempt to master it myself. But, with 48 hairpins, I'd first needed to find out which one you can actually do the jump on. So, I set about finding it
I could have just attempted the irohzaka jump on each corner but that would not have been practical at all. I had to work smarter, not harder. So instead. On my first run down, I didn't attempt it all. I merely took a small miander down the road to case it out. I could easily remove 46 number of hairpins from the equation simply because it looked impossible. Such as
Were left with 2 possible corners, and luckily, they were right next to each other. The first wasn’t as big of a jump as the second. But, there was a lot more room to maneuver before the jump however. I attempted this jump a number of times, each one as futile as the last. I looked back at the scene in initial d, and it was clear that jump #1 wasn’t the one.
With one jump remaining, I knew all I had to do now was perfect the jump. So, I took a lengthy run up in my first irohzaka jump attempt.
Anyway, back to the iroh jump.
It was almost as if the stars were aligning. The approach to the corner seemingly took forever. I gave the handbrake a hearty heave, swung the back end around and aligned the front of my car perfectly for the jump. I stepped on the throttle, gripping the steering wheel as tight as ever and sent it off the edge.
cut music show crash
talk about crash
You didn’t think it would be that easy would you?
Not at all.
So, up and down I went along this short section of road. Attempting it over, and over and over and over and over. This took forever. The sun was even starting to set.
I spent around an hour attempting it, with each attempt getting close and closer. But then, after one particularly good attempt, I jumped over the guardrail and fell out of the map. Does that count as an irohazaka jump? No.
And with that, I had reached my limit. So I shut the game down.

I decided to try the Irohazaka Jump on the correct corner this time, and it may actually be possible... czcams.com/video/cfSrPuiNA2s/video.html
i’ve only landed 2 really good ones in probably like 100 attempts. really cool when it’s done right but that happens so rarely it’s not worth it
Hmm, A worth opponent!
youre just bad
@@user-yk1cw8im4h say dont you have a video of it if your not?
I trying with a Evo 10 tuned and 5 out of 10 I can do it. Isn't to difficult, only right line
Keep in mind that the Initial D MR2 probably had rally suspension installed
And the 86 copied the jump a few corners later
that is a good point, rally cars usually don't nose dive as hard as street cars over jumps either, so that may be something to consider. I'm wondering if manipulating the CG of the car could help too?
@@saulekaravirs6585 you also use the throttle and brake to control the angle it comes off and lands. Colin McRae said that.
@@christiantaylor1495when you are doing a jump there's a point where your front tyres come off the ground but the rear tyres still have traction
if you accelerate at that point it will be like doing a wheelie and the nose of the car wont fall as much
@@nicholaslau3194 Takumi's 86 DID have rally suspensions.
iroha is our teams main course and we all can do the jump, but its not benefitial in most corners. but its more for overtaking, when youre chasing and the leader takes the corner a little wide and there isnt quite enough space to overtake on the inside, you gotta go more inside.
Since you guys have a lot of experience on the track, mind telling me what is considered a fast lap and what cars do you use?
@@venominonbg1740depends what version of the track youre running, we use project kaidos iroha. we had a race on it with the stock gt86 and in practice we got like 5:05 downhill runs

@@happi6969 Can you please tell me, what is PK Iroha? I have only seen TU and EK ones.

The first jump by mr2 was performed at corner 33. Maybe you should give this one a try
There is a giant pole there 😆
@@tommyshommy you go before the pole
Irohazaka has 2 courses, uphill, and downhill. So "Corner 33" isn't actually 33rd corner in the downhill course. The very next corner of 2:56 is the "Corner 33", which MR2 performed the first jump.
Yesssss
@@Linea_Arpolite_stage 3 clearly showed a shrine and before hairpin 33 on the downhill, there is clearly a shrine located there
The iroha jump is easier in AWD car. but yes, it hits front bumper "badly" and might end up wrecking front end. but actually SUSpension isnt in that bad condition and it can actually survive many jumps, not to mention modified Rally suspension.
you really just had to make an amogus joke huh

Fun fact... there is a roblox game called touge legends and it could use you in it

I don't know how AC emulates a car's weight, but I assume that because the MR2 is mid-engine, theoretically it's nose should not fall as much as it does in the AC or other sims. I don't know, just throwing it out there. :D
the weight distribution is negligible since the car is travelling so slow that the rear is still on the road while the front has already begun accelerating towards the ground. you would have to be travelling very very fast to get a somewhat flat landing :)
I just watched the Initial D: 3rd Stage movie yesterday... suspension go bai bai
since Beam NG lets you tune and fully shows the results of said tuning you could try with a massive lift to the suspension, a skip plate, and bumper replaced with a bash bar.
This is actually interesting, I wanna give it a go myself and see if its really possible now
Btw mr2 pribably has a rally suspension because that was one of the fastest suspenion setups for touge and he had in mind that he will attempt to do it so he had to set everything up
As someone said on a video of the original scene, "Try this in real life in your SW20 MR2, and you will end up over the side of the mountain, rear first!"
I think irohazaka jump can be perform pretty good if you jump at the right corner
33th corner
Loved the editing on this one your production quality is getting better
Your mistake: you can use irohazaka on 33th turn (the number is writen on the plate in the middle of corner), on 36th and longer `till the squared turn, idk, just play initial D arcade stage or listen commentators in initial d third stage. Actually, that`s not so hard, i tried on gamepad, keyboard, wheel (logitech g920) and from 3rd try i have cleared this jump. First try on keyboard, thats much easier.(Not mouse!)
I rhink that he should jump while drifting so he jumps sideways and the rear lands first or at the same time as front does.
yeah, was about to comment this, i think it also depends on the version of iroha being used, some versions have more altitude in the jump than others, and some mods have more bouncier suspension
Love the new format of vids ❤️
amazing editing as always
The first irohazaka jump IS before your spot higher in the pass thé 33 corner iconical by the little temple
Lovely use of Jazz Cartel - Blue Haze at the start
Kai uses left foot braking in the MR2 and possibly used it before the jump so try that at corner 33
Love the jungle classix in the background.. keep the content coming brother ur the don♥️🙏
the mr2 had the engine in the rear, although the 200bx has it in the front, which is probably why it tipped forward and ripped the bumper off.
my only thoughts would be rally style suspension, i.e. a slight lift or long travel suspension or both, they could have also modified the bumper to have stronger attachment points to the car or have ground off part of the bottom for a better approach angle.
You might wanna redo this one. Try on the 33rd corner.
If I recall there should be a handful of turns where you can make the jump and the first one that Kai took in third stage should appear after you pass this red bench (or whatever it is I have no idea) and should lead into a relative long straight before the jump.
Loved the casual cut to the sunk cost fallacy xD
BeamNG Drive is realistic, however in real life the bumper would'bt get flung off that easily. I wonder if it actually is possible in real life but for racing sims, unless there's a more realistic one, I think it's impossible
0:30 - “Jungle Is Massive.”
One hint of this was that after kokashiwa jumped takumi also jumped. So it cannot possibly be the last one that one could jump.
I've actually done it many times in beaming with an 86, prob cuz the suspension didn't jump as much
Kai Kogashiwa did the jump on corner number 33-36 (i think). So you need to count the hairpins as you go down the mountain
You should try tsubaki line its really fun!
form initial d arcade stage i learned from playing is that the Connors you took will yes lead you to fail but there is a part of the track where the strait was after you pass that then there is the Connor where you can do it but as you know initial is a arcade game not like assetto Corsa
U never tryed it on asseto (because I dont have it), but I tryed on beamng.
And after a few runs, I realised something. It isnt a jump, is more like a small cut on some corners, only to pass the front of the car on it, or to pass someone on the inside. And it isnt really worthy at all, but is fun to try.
I swear your uploading the videos in order in watching inital D right now hahah.
I was literally just watching the race with ken
Do you mean Kai? Because Ken kogashiwa isn't seen racing in the series
2:03 yes it’s a mega irohazaka jump
I remember one time I saw a vid about "irohazaka jump" it's not irohazaka but it's in real life rally
the link czcams.com/video/gar-PaPdD3E/video.html
maybe it should be done slower in a low cliff, the scene in initial d is probably over exaggerated
The sunk costs part was hilarious 😆
Mid engines cars are lighter in the front so they wouldn’t nose dive as much I think, just have to find the sweet spot for the speed when you leave the ledge, you’d want traveling flat when the back wheels leave the ledge
That strange, but it is not cut is more short racing line, inside part of the road and jump, in my opinion.
the only ones i ever landed happened mid drift
probably something with the weight in the rear right tire idk
0:30 was that wicked wicked massive massive by chinesemidiboard or a different song using that sample?
I think you need to go like turn on which direction you are in with handbrake so it's easier and position the car in a diagonal position to have momentum on the jump. (edit:) To get a smoother attempt
OK YOU GET MY RESPECT FOR USING BEAMNG AT THE END LOL 😂😂
Lol I've never heard the MR 2 referred to as "Mister2" 😂
"in the trusty mister 2."
That killed me XD
I wonder if either game simulates the weight of a midship properly, or does it just consider a car is X weight and that's it. Since that was the whole reason for the MR2 being able to do the gimmick, or so it is said.
The 86 just doing it right after is probably just plot armour more than anything.
There must be another factor that plays a part in this jump. The show display its techniques as realistic but dramatized, so it might not be a jump but simply a slope?
Yes. I've tried in beam ng too lol. Super fun but I've never got it
I know when to jump but i cannot describe where. And this might be the smallest clue and when the hairpins get really smaller that is where you do it
well in bmg you used a for engine car maybe the bening in the back would belp the mr2?
Where do you get all those roads? I have assetto corsa but only have circuits.
This is one of my favorit youtube chanels ever can you do a list on things that not so realistic and things that you dont like about assetto corsa? I play assetto corsa and i like it but ther is a few things i dont like
There was one video that made the jump, wel the ledge is more smaller, it was a rally racing vid
Hey bro what if we put maximum weight on the rear side so that it can be stable and we can perform the jump
Oh, cool I wasn't expecting this when I requested, yay
irl road. they extend the guard rail bcs people try to fly their car so much.
Im thinking weight distribution might come to play, asseto was not designed to do this, but it might work better with a midship in BeamNG
Sad that the exact thing isn't possible. What you can do though is try and go through sideways or create an even further inside line and put the front on the grassy hill to get through a little quicker or squeeze past someone.
*T. Stebbins Final Blow intensifies (densha de D version)*
if this is a map of the actual road from initial d, it is done at the last 4 turns of it i am pretty sure
pls make video about shinji technique
As everyone else is daying, try it at The right corner
33th
Try Conerr 33 it was the one that the anime showed
"Mister 2" that killed me
Who could have guessed launching your car off a 2 meter high jump at low speed would end in the front end getting absolutely destroyed???
Still my favorite race from Initial D, shit was cool as hell. I'd run the shit out of that course if I could, but Assetto Corsa is a bit jank on my PC and the BeamNG mod is outdated. Initial D Arcade Stage doesn't really have the same effect, either, it's a lot less of an event in that game, its just a line
I knew were it is because I played so much initial d street stage 😂
There’s a video of someone pulling it off but on a different corner, one with a concrete wall…
Can confirm it's not a good idea, I jumped my real mr2 over a bridge and smashed one of the front anti roll bar mounts out of the frame...
You are supposed to do it at the 33rd and 34th hairpin, if the map is accurate to the show ofc
What shaders do you use?
that's it im calling it a mister 2 now
Ya-know, as a guy that likes playing for fun, I did it 50 times and I got 4 jumps out of it, try driving EK9, Subaru, Toyota Chaser or Rx7. High powered cars could work.
Irl the mr2 would snap oversteer after the landing the cars suspension couldn't handle a landing like that lol
Pretty sure it had rally suspension on it, and maybe the jump was way smaller
how good are you at hairpins now ?
I think he had beefed up suspension and I don't think this was the right corner. Hairpin 33 I believe is the correct one, I don't think that's 33.
Try reverse entry so the front doesn't hit the ground as bad see how that works
That's it I'm calling these cars MR. 2's from now on.
I'm not saying wether or not its a gimmick but my immidiate thought to Inital D's biggest gimmick was the fujiwara zone.
1:06 second one after might be possible...?
what mr2 mod is that?
In fact, there is a simulator where you can try the iroha jump without dying, rfactor, I guess that's the reason is obvious, that simulator is pretty old and the suspension model is not that realistic, but I tried the jump in a lot of solo runs and it worked, now it's time to see if I can do it in a battle.
Where can I get Iro for BeamNG?
I did the jump in v3 a v2
The physics do not line up with what an MR2 actually is or how it handles from my experience as an owner of one.
The front is falling downwards as you make the jump when it shouldn't as the engine is in the middle not the front.
The car used also is not the reflection of a real cars steering characteristics because MR2's turn much sharper at speed and would have snapped violently as you correct your steering.
It might help is you have poor gripping tyres on the rear of the car and floor it in 2nd gear to get it carrying higher speed around the hairpin.
This is the biggest example of SIM vs ARCADE physics.
Assetto Corsa is definitely one of the best sims, just not for crash physics lmao
Tried, yeah, I did the jump some times, sure why I should not deny it, but it find it just pointless and not realistic at all, you'd just smash the chassis and suspensions in real life, and you make it at least if you are able to do it with enough momentum and fast enough to make the revs fall down before launching yourself in the trick. So I prefear to make more "modest" jumps and cuts in certain hairpins that actually make you gain more acceleration in exit. And Irohazaka is probably my favourite touge of them all alongside Akagi, especially if combined in it's uphill course not used in the series.
Jungle is massive!
Wicked
Tak 86 and Kai sw20 is not stock, Bunta tuned and tested many times before handed over to Takumi by judging the leg bruise Bunta has because he didn't installed bucket seat. Also Kai SW20 is tuned because his father was a rally driver used to raced with it
Me who does this all the time when I'm in Irohazaka just for the fun of it in my Evo 10
Try with a wrc car.
WRC has entered the chat
basically, irl, RIP suspension
Mate... where to DL the BeamNG version of this map?
This has always seemed like pure BS to me cause it just makes me think with how difficult it is how did kogashiwa practice that technique to be able to pull it off first attempt in the middle of a battle
So you have no problem suspending your disbelief on the teenage protagonist learning to drift and gutter run on mountain roads through delivering tofu? 😂
@@justs_ that teenager had five years of practice prior to his first race.
@@archwaldo and Kogashiwa practiced the jump since he started racing on Irohazaka, same thing as Takumi’s gutter run my guy 😂
This is probably a dumb question but what game is this?
