    My first time watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless (2004). This movie really messes with the mind (heh). What a fascinating love story with some comedic moments, and one or two just flat-out weird ones well. I LOVED the tone of this film, and it raised some interesting questions and left me collecting my thoughts. I hope you enjoyed my Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless movie reaction & commentary

      This is one of my all time favourite movies, great to see a reaction to it… so looking forward to 12 Monkeys! Oh and I should also recommend La science des rêves (The Science of Sleep) by the same director as this one.

    In 2001 my husband died, in 2003 my only child died. In 2004 I decided to go back to university and took a film studies class. We watched this film and at the time I thought hell yeah, please erase my memory. By the end of the film I knew I would never want to give up the good memories to erase the ones that hurt. This movie is in my top 5 favorites for sure. So glad you were able to experience it. Oh and they filmed 2 scenes with Naomi that were edited out.

      My heart feels for you, Tracy. You experienced the top two hardest losses in a short time. I know each death also brings all the agony of the others to the fore. You’re probably tired of people calling you strong, but you really are. In 2019 my only child died, my daughter Laura. My mother died one month before Laura. In total, I lost 6 female family member in 2-1/2 years. I crawled in to bed and am just this year (2023) emerging. Much love, esp to all the moms who children live in heaven. 💕🐝💕

      No, I personally would NOT erase ANY of my memories, mainly for the same reasons he outlined at the end of his video.
      In fact, when I saw this movie, up until when he actually started getting the procedure done, I was saying to myself "Don't do it, don't do it..."
      To ME, losing any memories that you could potentially learn from and ESPECIALLY losing any good aspects... that concept is just devastating to me. During the movie I started to imagine how I would feel if there may have been past life events that had been forcibly and completely removed from my memory, and that thought alone was enough to break me. Watching Joel try to rescue some memories after he'd changed his mind but it was too late was SO painfully sad to watch! 😢

    Love this film. The story is told very much like a brain malfunction - scattered, distorted, falling apart. But Joel and Clem are so much like a real couple. Exactly the type of opposites who’d fall for eachother.

    I enjoy the connection between this movie and Arrival - knowing a relationship will end with pain doesn't mean we should give up on all the good things that happen before the end. All these collected experiences are what make us the people we are, and if we skipped over something that will be painful we also skip over that part of ourselves that may have learned something so profound that it shaped the core of ourself into a better person who is inspired to do fantastic things... you never know.

    god I love this movie. But it *always* makes me cry rewatching it. The most poignant film I've ever seen about the bittersweet end of a relationship, and the painful quandary one feels torn between wanting to forget everything and make the pain go away, and wanting to hold on to all of those beautiful precious good moments you had shared with someone you loved.

    • @sathvamp1
      @sathvamp1 Před rokem

      Ever since I first saw "Inside Out" (as a 30-year-old adult), and noticed firsthand how actual feel-good brain endorphins can sometimes come along with tears, that movie turned me into a tearjerker seeker.
      But that being said, there have only been a total of 7 movies in my LIFE (5 of which I'd seen after age 30)... that I can remember ever triggered me to cry, and THIS one TIED WITH "The Land Before Time" in getting THE strongest response out of me.
      To ME, losing any memories that you could potentially learn from and ESPECIALLY losing any good aspects... that concept is just devastating to me. I've noticed it's been literally impossible for me to cry to a RE-watch of ANYthing... but this one definitely came close.
      After the wheels started turning in my head after I finished my own FIRST full watch of this movie, I totally broke down. Then when I started watching reactions of it, I caught myself starting to slightly tear up just from re-watching the shorter clips of the REACTIONS (which was previously unheard of for me). But... a full second re-watch did NOT have the same effect as the first. I'm still looking for a repeater-tearjerker, lol.

    Both of the leads in this are so wonderful. Jim was just coming out of a very bad breakup in real life when he was cast and the director Gondry said he was so beautiful in his complete misery that he was perfect for the role. Kate reminds me so much of a couple of my exes... mainly the ones that had borderline personality disorder.. a beautiful magnetic mess. Exciting and terrifying.

    So, so glad you watched this film. It's beautiful, sad, tender, funny, and poignant. I think the experimental nature of how the film is put together (time skips, overlapping memories, props, unique sets, etc.) combined with great chemistry between Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet and a believable story with layers makes everything work amazingly. I know that the scenes with Joel as a child are a little weird, but I think you put the meaning together well when you observed that so much of Joel's personality can be seen projected from those memories from his childhood. I'm not someone who would want my memory erased, but I think that this film really demonstrates how human that impulse can be. The terrible things we say and do to each other when we're hurt and in relationship... the depths of our pain. I think Joel's line at the end of, "Enjoy it," demonstrates not only his own realization of what to do now that they have a second chance, but also how we should try to move through those moments ourselves: intentionally, while we still have them. Thanks again for watching this!

So, the other day I said to her, remember that movie…and she only vaguely did because she’s not an indie fan, but once she recalled the concept: I said, ‘I would LOVE to tick off all of my favorite movies and then watch ‘em all up!’ Okay, not all of them. I love a film that starts so many conversations. Fun to watch you enjoying it, and it makes sense that the ending can’t be ‘wrapped up’…so, I really understood your ending your ending. Okay, this is fascinating to me. Charlie Kaufman wrote it, and in his version-Joel and Clementine don’t land up giving love another go around…knowing that the merry go wheel will eventually stop.❤ Whereas for me~that’s the entire point of the film. It’s at least a delightful and unexpected dessert that popped up when I wanted it, as the film had already unraveled. (dessert~as I do now, with my coffee & every so often, I get spontaneous and DO that!) Perhaps not the entire point, but a strong one, being that life isn’t necessarily about ‘loss’ if falling in love doesn’t take you all of the way through it. I found their willingness to just do it, to continue to begin their relationship (again) anyway~the beautiful and brave exclamation mark of the film.
    Had Michael Gondry NOT changed the film, and hearing the tapes had merely sent her packing…what would we think of the film? I am fascinated to reimagine it this way.
    I felt that the Dunst-Ruffalo relationship definitively ought not to have ended. From her perspective, the young man who she likes and vice versa, still is interested, despite knowing that she had been so weak as to idolize their boss, much less involve herself with him despite his marriage, and be manipulated into erasing him by his ongoing control of her. All of this adoration of the process which had elicited from Mark Ruffalo a distinct groan earlier on, hence now that they were now on the same page regarding the erasure of life business, in a better position to move ahead and turn that page to ‘the Help Wanted section’.

      I can relate to that. Clementine really reminded me of my ex in some ways, the free spirited nature versus my overly structured self. And yea, it's interesting how isolated I have become recently. I think I'll try to work on that....Hope you can as well. 💙

    • @sathvamp1
      @sathvamp1 Před rokem

      @@CasualNerdReactions I think there's different aspects of "free spirited" and likewise different aspects of "overly structured", and I do believe there are optimal times/places for both types of tendencies.
      For example:
      DURING my free time, I can be quite spontaneous and free-spirited (while still sufficiently maintaining my work and other responsibilities when it's time to do THAT).
      But for one of my exes, on the other hand... he did not seem to understand that intentionally forgoing work responsibilities (especially excessively and at inopportune times) can threaten one's ability to feed and provide for oneself (which also puts the partner at risk too).

  • @LovelessDogg1
    @LovelessDogg1 Před 9 měsíci +1

    Joel and Naomi wasn't really a thing. She's in all the deleted scenes, but it's pretty clear they're "relationship" was practically non-existent by the time Clem came along. They were just living together because the House was in both of their names and they would have the occasional conversation about getting back together. That's why Joel brings it up near the beginning.
    I think a lot of the scenes with Naomi were deleted because it does give off this feeling that Joel was a bad person but that was hardly the case. They didn't really have much of a connection with each other that matched the one he has with Clem.

  • @WildMoonLacquer
    @WildMoonLacquer Před rokem +1

    Fascinating is a great way to put it...The concept of reviewing a relationship in reverse. Of dissecting it one memory at a time. It makes me very introspective. Plus I love the creative filming! Fan Theory: the ending scene where Joel and Clementine are looping down the beach, it indicates that after they meet, they fall into the same pattern, they meet, fall in love, erase their memories, and meet again. And it goes throughout their whole life till the end, which makes it sad, but I find it heartwarming a bit, that true love never ends, that u may leave, but it'll always come back to u, but in a sick sad kinda way

    32:04 😭😭 An early draft had an old Clementine going to Lacuna at the end of the film. A glimpse of her file shows a long history of previous memory erasures. The final draft finishes on a more optimistic note.

    Charlie Kaufman movies are ....unique.... if you liked Eternal Sunshine, you may also like Being John Malkovich (the film that made Charlie K well known). There's also Synecdoche New York, and others. The only thing they all have in common - ironically - is their uniqueness.

    Maybe "Frodo" was just that aspect/character who wants/shows how he wished he could be loved that much, for someone to want to erase him from their memory.
    Her beautiful face, maybe some of the aspects she told about Joel, and that clinical lab, made him want to become an object of Love from Clem's Eyes.
    His point of view is like the third person, that looks at the "neighbors green grass", thinks it's greener than his, but also shows how wonderful, a relationship can be seen from a "third person/objective" point of view, as to how the point of view would have kept these memories and would have even copied/mimicked them for themselves.
    Creepy as it was, also complimentary, and also again, an objective point of view about a couple's love.

    I’m currently dealing with the potential end of a twelve-year friendship. Like THE friendship. And it sucks because it’s no one’s fault. He’s dealing with severe mental health issues and has been for a long time. And I can’t seem to help, which would be ok, but it’s gotten to the point where we are hurting each other (not intentionally). He’s neglectful and angry. I’m impatient and push too hard. Apparently I don’t listen well. Just last week we got back in touch and made plans for the weekend, but it fell apart and ended badly. Now we are back to me begging to talk and him ghosting.
    It’s awful. The days are so long and the not knowing if we can work it out or if this is it is really heavy.
    Any kind of breakup is just devastating. I completely understand the urge to just erase it all so the current pain stops. But I’d lose SO much if I did. Inside jokes, all the confidence I’ve gained through knowing him, and so much laughter.
    I wouldn’t trade it, even if this is the end. Even if it keeps going and gets worse before it does end. Because as awful as this is, the good was SO good that’s it’s still a fair trade.
    Mental illness is cruel and unfair. It’s erased the person I knew and is going to cheat both of us of more good that would have passed between us.

      I’m sorry you’re going through that. I found myself pulling away from a very close friend recently for my own mental health and realizing I needed to do that was very difficult. I hope one things are different and you can recover what you had, but mostly I hope you find peace and healing in this season.

    Bit late to the party here... only just discovered your Amélie reeaction (absolutely in my Top 3 films). I used to work IT support in a school, and one summer holiday I used the DVD collection in the media studies classroom as a library lol. They had a special edition of this DVD which came with a booklet that had the original screenplay! Turns out Howard got Mary pregnant and she had an abortion. Yikes. And in the epilogue, it said Clem had her memories of Joel erased multiple times. Double Yikes.

    First, a random comment (then I'll answer your question):
    There are only 7 movies in my LIFE (5 of which I'd seen after age 30)... that I can remember ever triggered me to cry, and THIS one TIED WITH "The Land Before Time" in getting THE strongest response out of me. Part of the "why" is below...
    Now, to answer your question:
    No, I personally would NOT erase ANY of my memories, mainly for the same reasons YOU outlined at the end of your video.

    Wonderful reaction (as usual!) to one of my all-time favorite films. The direction, acting, story, effects are incredible. .
    May I suggest a film that, alongside this one, stands out... with some apt comparisons. The Film is "STRANGER THAN FICTION."
    A BRILLIANT film starring another comedic actor not known for his serious roles. Will Ferrell. (He's GREAT in this) Also starring Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, and Tony Hale. It's SO GREAT... a strange, beautiful romantic story and SO UNDER THE RADAR. Nobody talks about it, but it's a fantastic film you will NEVER forget. (even if you erase that part of it!)
