    On the subject of "What did you expect?"
    ... For them to follow their own rules? Food on the table. No body shaming. It's all right there, you showed us the rules. If it said "Expect body shaming and for everyone to completely disrespect your clothing and personal space!" then sure, okay, fine, it literally says it in the rules- BUT IT DOESN'T. That's pretty clear.

    Unfortunately, there are a lot of anti-union people who have been in unions. They just... Kind of ignore what they have. They almost always harp on seniority as the problem, and defending underperforming workers. They think it'll be better without that.
    They're blind to the reality of the situation, but that's what they think. They don't understand that defending other workers is important because you could get tossed too without a single care in the world. They don't understand the protections they have. They don't understand that they're not going to magically be recognized for their hard work if you get rid of the unions. That's not how any company works. No, without union protections, you'll be sacked because you're sick, or because the boss doesn't like you, or because it's Tuesday and they felt like it. You'll lose hours, wages, and more because some d-bag thought it'd be funny, or maybe it might possibly theoretically improve number go up-ness for one quarter. They don't see how, without the strict seniority rules, employers flip between not giving raises/bonuses at all and giving cousin Steve a promotion because he's been working so hard for the last two weeks that he totally deserves it (never mind that Steve hasn't done a lick of work yet and you don't think he ever will).
    That's not to say unions are perfect. But a corporation's job is to make money, even at the cost of its employees. A union's job is to protect those employees. It's pretty damn obvious what's best there.

    You can work on SAG-AFTRA projects even without being union, it's just a matter of signing a short contract. There's nothing actually prohibiting them. Kyle McCarley actually tweeted a lot about this and also discussed it in a recent interview on the Cartoon Cipher, so I'd recommend checking those out.

    Mob Psycho 100 is without a doubt one of the best anime of the past 5+ years. Obviously, as a fan I plan on watching the final few arcs play out (I've been waiting for it since s2 ended and I had to know how the manga ended), but this whole ordeal has really put a black mark on the experience for me. I don't watch a whole lot of dubs anymore, but this one was fantastic until this point. Kyle Mccarley just understood who the character was supposed to be and helped made the dub stand out. Suddenly the 1st episode of S3 airs and at least four VAs were changed (& those are just from the ones I actually recognized) for the most idiotic of reasons. Nothing against the new VA for Mob either, but it's just a whole new character and hard to accept. I would have rather waited for some sort of agreement to hopefully be reached and get a dub with the same characters that I've gotten used to then get a simuldub with a bunch of new ones.

    All the tables are inside giant barrels (Diogenes lived in a barrel) and the bathrooms are made up to look like city streets (he was a public nuisance that way), and there'd be occasional debates about the definitins of things and how far one could twist a definition to start defining something else, a la "behold, a man."

That wouldn't only hurt Sony movies, but would hurt their Video games, and even their commercials. Imagine if SAG-AFTRA pulled all their members from the next Spider Man game, while it's in mid development. Imagine a company the size of Sony, Not being able to use ANY hollywood talent for any commercial.

    So the Nier thing, it turns out it was not some new ARG thing but actually a mod that someone made, which although that might sound lame, it was the first time someone cracked the game enough to mod it so extensively and I believe the modders released their tools publicly so people could potentially add their own story mods to NieR if they wanted to now.

  • @CURSEDSei
    @CURSEDSei Před rokem +1

    The 'Nier Automata' hidden Church thing did turn out to be a mod that was the work of a few different modders all pooling their work together. The biggest reason people kept thinking it might be a 'real' thing was because the work to implement a whole new area like that was assumed... improbable on the verge of maybe impossible, and of course Yoko Taro not outright denying it. Something said by Lance McDonald--who does a LOT of modding work and the like. He's also the one to discover the 'last' secret in Nier Automata a while back, which was a hidden Developer Debug menu that grants access to several things that they left in-game because it isn't accessible outside of a very specific moment.
    And yeah, the whole... Crunchyroll thing just... It is disgusting, but it's also unsurprising given it's Crunchyroll. They still pay much of their staff like crap, and the continued monopolization of services under their cheaply produced plastic umbrella is only exacerbating those problems, while continuing to do very little for the artists and staff responsible for producing the content they peddle. I dropped Vrv because they allowed their one actually decent platform fall to pieces and, rather than try to perform any upkeep on it, just let it sit there and rot. Crunchyroll is absolutely not worth any sub price on its own to me, especially when paired with the horribly user-unfriendly UI they continue to use. But this just makes it easier to keep things that way, in spite of the fact there are series I'd like to watch but cannot-- especially not with the current locking of everything behind premiums they are doing now. Which... hell, they are doing that now precisely because they OWN the lion's share of Streaming services. For me, the only other anime streaming service available is Hidive and... I'm not even impressed with them, especially as they continue to lose series without replacing or explaining it.
    This news also absolutely kills my interest in Season 3 of Mob Psycho. Same as how the recent news regarding Bayonetta 3 replacing Bayonetta's VA has soured my interest in that game as well. It might not be the same reason as Mob's drop, but it was something kept intentionally silent on and hidden from consumers for practically a year now--and done full well knowing the backlash it might cause. It's shady and disrespectful, moreso when Platinum Games, like Crunchyroll, is continuing to advance some horrid practices with zero intention of stopping. It's been a... bad month for series getting their long-deserved 3rd entry it feels like.

    • @CURSEDSei
      @CURSEDSei Před rokem +2

      Forgot to say this too, but as someone who has only worked non-union jobs...? I still say people need to unionize. And that's because dear god some of the crap I've had to deal with, and the things I had to do, in those jobs... And that goes for Retail (though thank Anime God that chain has bankrupted themselves to near-nonexistance) as well as waste management work. Especially with 'At-Will' employmet is bullcrap, while unions may not be perfect, it's the only way to protect yourself when a boss fires someone because they are jealous, or who uses health issues that an employee has as a club to abuse them with and mock over them not being able to work whenever management wants.

    Automata comes from the word Automaton, which is what we used to call robots, before the word robot was popular. Automata is actual the plural of Automaton. And in Nier, we know that all the people in the game are robots. Simple way to remember how it's pronounced. I had a unionized job in retail where the rule was I had to pay union dues off my paycheck but I would get no representation until I was made a full time employee. Full time employment was only offered after 4 years of part time. Management regularly went to weekend cottage parties with the union rep. It wasn't great. The building was eventually closed down for 'major' renovations resulting in everyone being let go(I left long before this) though some speculate that it was to dislodge the union. People were worried that this would be a new method against unionization but I have never heard of it happening ever again.
    Anyway, despite my experience, I still believe that unions are important especially for industries where change is desperately needed like the gaming industry or dubbing as stated here on the podcast.

    On the mental health angle: tabletop roleplaying fans have long talked about how the cyber-psycho trope is a bit problematic (stigmatizing prosthesis as making you inhuman isn’t really IT) but there is definitely nuance there. I felt the show portrayed it as well as they could.

    • @airplanes_aren.t_real
      @airplanes_aren.t_real Před rokem +1

      I never really picked up on that, I just thought it was a mix of "addiction allegory because the more you use the harder it is to go back to the point where you need bottles of medication just to not go fully insane" , "balancing mechanic so that people don't go full op without consequences" and "nerve damage because your brain needs to connect with things it wasn't designed to and take care of a much bigger body than planned"

    • @Arsenic7
      @Arsenic7 Před rokem +1

      @@airplanes_aren.t_real that’s actually exactly the issue because if you think about what they are doing these people are simply installing prosthesis. Essentially you couldn’t have a large number of prosthesis in this universe or you’d go “insane” even if you need them. In the roleplaying games that do this (Cyberpunk and Shadowrun) there isn’t really a difference between “cyber” prosthesis and “inert” ones in this regard. The show makes that distinction and focuses on the less problematic elements.

    • @Arsenic7
      @Arsenic7 Před rokem +1

      Like imagine you are in a car crash and needed your lower body replaced. Even in the anime version you’d be risking cyberpshycosis if you wanted anything approaching a full replacement.

    • @airplanes_aren.t_real

      @@Arsenic7 that's actually something that I thought was explained by Rebecca and doc because they use a lot of augmentations but don't go overboard, like the cyberpsicosis only happens if you push it too far with too many enhancements that have too many functions that push you to your limit
      Having said that I definitely see your point, it does frame any form of augmentation as a possible risk
      I always felt like cyberpunk was meant to be a criticism of Transhumanism (basically the belief that human augmentation is the next stage of human evolution) that instead of being a cool sci-fi wonderland of cyborgs it's a dystopia where those augmentations only reinforce pre exiting societal structures that would inevitably make the rich richer and the poor poorer

    I have known a large number of union people that have been anti-union, though that comes with explanation & caveats. I live in Michigan (United States) & most of the anti-union people in a union vent their anger & hatred against specific unions & usually not all unions. We have a lot of automotive jobs & related work: automotive unions have powerful sway. Most of the stories & reasons seem to amount to unions acting as a corrupt extension of administration instead of worker advocates. The most memorable specific example in my mind was a factory that caught on fire from the paint shop (very flammable, explosive chemicals) while only workers around the immediate area were warned or evacuated, while the rest of the factory didn't find out until later, even though onsite union reps were reported as being warned first. That is an example from 25 years ago & is second hand though it is one that has clearly left lasting impact for me. I have only heard stories of this flavor & degree concerning automotive unions, & hopefully they remain in yesteryear.

    So it is mostly a mod

      I do think the general feedback ended up being mostly positive though since it was a cool demo of modding tools and the people who care about Nier Automata a lot still are the ones who are okay with these types of things.

    While I agree with unionization, and think Crunchyroll should have taken the deal. SAGaftra has failed to protect members and take stances time and again from some pretty big issues (the open secret with Harvey Weinstein being a good example). And I think the industry would be better with more than one union representing talent (though not necessarily 300 small mom and pop unions which would obviously hurt with accomplishing anything industry wide).
    Most of the issues I've seen and heard of are generally individual examples or specific union issues, not a union problem in general (the usual people occasionally are corrupt so of course that can happen in unions, and in multi-shop public unions sometimes some shops get dicked).
    ETA: Your also slightly wrong on US fiduciary duties. They have to work to increase shareholder value, they can do that over long periods at the expense of short term profits (legally) from my understanding. Now the board and share holders may vote people out over it, but as long as they can make the case for longer term value; taking them to court would probably be hard.

    EVERYBODY should unionize and corporate america sucks but Americans caring about dubs will never not be weird to me. We have subs now, who would willingly watch a dub

      The two podcasts we scrapped ended up being me talking nonstop, so we were making a conscious effort to dial that back & encourage Yazy (who’s normally shy) to speak more.
