In those days, it wasn't polite to play to win. One ~hoped~ to win but played in such a fashion that generally indicated defeat in increasingly cinematic and hilarious ways. Fully adore these animated battle reports!
Many (mainly ork players, from my experience) still play like that. Which is why I love orks. Win or lose it needs to be fun.
Definitely a superior way to play.
This is how Middle Earth is still played at most levels. All about the cinematics.
That's how I personally like to play anything, regardless of game. Shame almost everyone is such a tryhard nowadays.
This! There is a reason the min-maxers got such a bad reputation at the local game stores. No one wanted to play against them, not because you would lose, but because of HOW they won.
Despite not even being alive for oldhammer editions. It's a weird faux nostalgia and fascination with the old aesthetic and janky mechanics. Love the content.
I thought I was the only one. I prefer the old 90's aesthetic of warhammer it looks way more stylized from the artworks to the models.
I'm in a similar weird boat. Like I know metal models are on the whole worse than plastic but I for some illogical reason prefer them. This gets even stranger considering my preferred 40k army is admech. Which didn't exist as an army till like 7th edition.
Right? I plan on painting my next army (goffs) retro and hell I even want to play blood angels just so I can have that snappy red. Mustâve been a great time to play
â@@dickkickem4238you could definitely paint admech in a second ed style scheme. Lots of bright red. Lots of black and white checker board trim on clothing, black and bright yellow stripes on weapons etc. And those delicious goblin green and flock bases.
As someone who was alive then, the new gritty aesthetic was something I messed with at the time through darker paint schemes, washes etc, sponge weathering etc. But I still loved the gloriously bright schemes!
I utterly agree, I was an early 2000s kid with a lot of older cousins and relics from the nineties, I think I got the best of both eras⊠itâs been incredible :)
Not going to lie hearing that there was a time where GW subbed their own minis put a smile on my face. Great video
It was a different age
Me when
Me when my commander punches the truck so hard it falls over our heads.
I love that they had sub optimal lists and tactics, forgot to do stuff and proxied units because they hadnât painted enough yet. Itâs all so small scale and human. Great battle report. Love the flat colours and basic shapes everywhere. I started in 3rd but there was a lot of this stuff still around to feel nostalgic about it nonetheless. đ
This was my favourite battle report at the time.
This really did let us relive it.
@@wombatgirl997 when I was twelve my parents took me to Disneyland. We were all jet lagged and at 3am I was wide awake and reading the dawn raid battle report in the warhammer 40,000 battle book. I remember my dad asking what I was reading and when I tried telling him what the âimperial space marinesâ and âspace Orksâ where up to he looked at me like I was mad. I remember the face he pulled 26 years later đ
For me it was the Rogue Trader era Space Wolves vs Orks battle report. Was impressed back in the day when they then added it to the Space Wolves Codex
I miss those old battle reports in White Dwarf.
It was so awesome! Remember as a kid i was so excited every time a new issue came in the mail đ.
As someone who didn't have the money or community to actually play Warhammer back in the 90s, but read a lot of books, White Dwarf, and online battle reports from that time period, this is an awesome bit of nostalgia. Hope to see more of them in the future!
Thatâs the plan
This was the first white dwarf I ever bought (I was 13), and it propelled me into the hobby almost entirely because of this battle report. Something about the each figure being shown by a round symbol and the vivid colours. 40k just isnât as fun these days. I still have my ultramarine and Ork armies based almost exactly on the rosters from this bat rep. And i still have this well read copy of WD. Amazing nostalgia. Thank you for making this.
when there was a HUGE difference between the number of models in an Ork and Space Marine army. 100 Gretchin cost the same as a devastator sqaud if recall correctly.
Damn, I remember reading this at the time! I remember with some fondness the Battlereport only books they did, the Epic one with Orks vs Yarrick always stuck in my mind!
I want that book!!
The wacky appearance of the Razorback had to do with its original roots - it started off as a Modeling Workshop customized Rhino, and the awkward looking turret was composed primarily from the front hatch cover of the Rhino kit with some plastic weapons attached to the front and some hatches put on the sides.
Loved this, brought back some fond memories! Would definitely watch more of these if you recounted other battle reports - swear there's one soon after this where the orks finally win against marines where 90% of the ork army is obliterated but the player (think its gav Thorpe) remembers its a take and hold objective
I have a long list of them
@@OldenDemon Then I look forward to seeing them on this channel! It's really fascinating to learn about this edition and White Dwarf from before my time.
This was the edition I cut my teeth on when I was 12, didn't paint, didn't have money, and I loved every moment of it. I really appreciate the content, it is a powerful time capsule for me.
It makes me feel rather old to admit that I remember this battle report. Just seeing the polystyrene cactus on the map made countless memories to flood through my mind.
The battle report writing back then tended to be great, too. It was usually written by the participants and was often funny.
you should feel pride for that. regardless of how you feel about modern warhammer, i think that was a wonderful time for warhammer.
The perfect ending to a classic battle report.
Always nice to see the boys in green take home a victory. A rare treat!
When that vehicle flipped in the air and crushed those models, I IMMEDIATELY wanted to play some Oldhammer. đ Thanks for the report!
I love these old style batreps. It's not quite as old, but the Imperial Guard vs Tyranids game in WD 306 was my first ever introduction to the hobby, and I think it would make for a fantastic video. I believe that was from 2006 and was meant to show off the then-new 4th edition Tyranids Codex. Ever since then I have always respected the Deathwatch.
I think my fave battle report was the 4 player "Carnage" Battle Report which had Dark Angels vs Orks vs Tyranids vs Word Bearers
I remember this one ! As a guard player, I reread it a dozen times at least, even if the guard performed very badly in it ahah. The DW did like 80% of the kill at the very end of the battle.
This is beautiful. I have only played 2nd Edition in the last 20 years. I am glued to this video.
I use razorbacks with those turrents for my epic 40k army, there cool AF.
omg i so remember this report.. i was so happy they got the win as I played ork right from rogue trader
I really enjoyed this, and I imagine any GW staff from this period would love watching it. I started collecting White Dwarf with issue 193, so this is before my time, but the photographs still have that wonderful glow that permeates all Warhammer content from the early 1990's. As a youngster, I remember feeling really disappointed when an army that I collected lost a battle report, especially if that army had to wait years to get another outing. Looking forward to the next video (and hoping that you'll get around to "Civil War" from 196).
Jervis and Jake actually posed for those pictures
Your videos canât come out fast enough. Love your channel. This feels like content designed for me.
Excellent, my first super fan
300 Points for a Tactical Squad, 90 for a Commander, and 90 for a Scout Squad. The time of Rogue Trader makes current point values interesting comparisons.
To be honest, I find this report more engaging than any contenporary battle, even though I'm barely old enough to remember 8e Warhammer Fantasy.
I put it down to the fact that I have no idea how this edition works. It's like watching an ordinary chess game that opens with white launching a pawn into the enemy backline where it explodes, knocking the enemy queen down to one wound.
Compared to more modern GW battle reports, I think the big difference is that nowadays GW emphasizes showing off the miniatures, whereas back then the focus was on narrating whatâs happening.
CZcams battle reports tend to vocally narrate whatâs happening, but the visuals tend to be a bit chaotic and similarly focused on showcasing the terrain and armies rather than explaining the sequence of events throughout the turn or game.
@@MasterShake9000 I always go the sense that the old battle reports were a bit slap-dash with the crew putting down what was in the studio army, rolling some dice, forgetting rules, doing something that might seem cool rather than what was tactically optimal.
Over time this changed and it ended up feeling more like an advert for the latest army. They would almost always win their inaugural battle and I really started to dislike the fact that we'd have half a White Dwarf devoted to telling us how great the new army was followed by a battle report that always had them coming out on top.
I liked this so much, I did my own 2nd edition style tactics video on my channel, thanks for inspiring
Love this nostalgia kick, I read the reports as a teenager when they came out and these videos are great trip back
Love seeing all those WDs in the very beginning. I recognize most of them!
This is one of few battle reports I remember. I love seeing it animated. A friend and I had hoped to do something similar but with Gorkamorka.
Oh man, I'm suddenly 13 again watching this, and remembering the hours I spent poring over WD battle reports. I remember this one so well. This really made my day.
I still have my 40k Battle Book, containing reprints of this and three other reports, and idly read it every now and then just for fun. Great work with this video, you really brought a treasured 40k memory to life.
It was a great book
Thank you. I really miss 2nd edition and those battke reports. This brought a couple of tears to my eyes.
You were allowed to charge from a moving vehicle in 2nd edition, but depending on how fast it was going meant you were likely to take a hit from leaping from said vehicle.
I really enjoyed this. thanks!
I can't even explain the dopamine/nostalgia brain rush I get when I see the early 90s models and scenery. It's the pinnacle for me. It's the perfect blend of attainable skill and polish.
Wow! It's mad that I remember this and other battle reports so well... Must've read and re read them 100s of times and they're burned into my brain, unlike 90% of the rest of my childhood!
Eldar Vs Orks with the big refinery in the centre and maybe a Take and hold objective is another one I loved. I still have a lot of these models as well, but lost more than I care to think about given the value of them these days!
(Probably doesn't need anything as a music bed after the intro. Let the battle speak for itselfâïž)
Still figuring out music levels and stuff, itâs all a work in progress
As someone who played 40k in 90s to the mid-aughts and is now getting back into it, I love these reports. Especially the shots of old 40k art and models.
As fun to watch as it was fun to play 2nd edition back in the day.
I remembered every detail of the original report, it was one of the first WD I bought and I reread it many times.
Ah, the time when playing the game was not about winning, but about having a memorable, crazy battle.
This was the first issue of white dwarf that I picked up, always enjoyed those old school reports and how they retold them.
Man, this has unlocked something in my brain! I started playing in the mid-90s when my best mate took me into a games workshop, and I was instantly hooked! The Space Wolf Codex spoke to me, and I've been collecting them ever since. I can probably still name the wolf guard in the space wolves vs Ork battle report in the codex đ really looking forward to seeing more content from this era, great work so far! Cheers!
I absolutely love these! The level of analysis is impressive to say the least. Proxy techmarine - lol!
This take me back - thanks dude!
The out rules for the battle wagon was great, it was an open topped vehical, the only open top transport in the game at that point. The best thing about it was that as an open toped transport it could move up to 6 (7 with a red paint job) and then the boys inside could jump out and charge on there own.
this is second edition, you cant charge from a moving vehicle and no red paint job, charges are declared before movement
This was amazing! Definitely more of this, please!
âLooked like someone tipped a bag of liquorice allsorts into an ashtray full of Bombay mix..â
Lmao, such a vivid picture.
Please keep these videos coming, loved every minute of it.
This is outstanding đ thank you for making it and hope to see more
I love this style of batrep!!! Please make more!
God I've been so hyped for a new video here. Let's go!
Great nostalgia trip. Thanks!
This was the first edition of White Dwarf I ever saw and it made me want to get into Warhammer. Unfortunately the only ship was an hour and a half away and my parents wouldn't take me.
Only took another 25 years to start, but I got there in the end.
Absolutely fantastic report. Subscribed!
Terrific and informative video! Please make more of these retro battle reports!
I can watch this endlessly. Such fond memories of the time.
I love these reports. I remember some of the battle reports so fondly
This video is amazing! Those old battle reports brought me into the hobby ~15 years ago. Thanks for the memories. :D
I LOVE this kind of videos man, keep it up! ^^
awesome! Thank you for the conmtent!
Fastest subscribe in a long while. Nostalgia overload. I can still feel the dead leg from reading this report while sat on the toilet as a kid.
Serious nostalgia hit, please keep making these.
Very cool and fun video. I love the battle report o-matic and you highlighting the obvious flaws in the game was hilarious. Glad I'm subscribed this early
Much appreciated!
This was fantastic! I hope you keep going with this as a series!!
That's the plan
Great commentary, thanks for the time to make this. I remember this report!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Greatest content on youtube right here
Cool concept retelling the old battles. Subbed
This channel is an absolute treasure. When i was a kid i used to skip over the battle reports in White Dwarf and head straight to the pictures of the models or read the lore. I now have a new apprecitation for all those battle reports i missed. I have the urge to dig through the crates of my back catalogue of White Dwarf magazines to find issue 175.
I wasn't around for Oldhammer but the old models somehow manage to look goofy and badass at the same time
Mostly the game being a "grimdark parody" instead of the "grimderp trying to be grimdark" it is since the start of the millenia.
@@wombatgirl997 Lion El'jonson was just a rip off of Lionel Jonson, who wrote a poem called "Dark Angel." The Primarch of the Night Lords is just Batman with the last name of the crazy guy from Apocalypse Now. The assassin sent to kill him was M'Shen (Martin Sheen, who was sent to kill Kurze in the movie). Sly Marbo is just Sylvester ('Sly') Stallone's Rambo. There was all sorts of silly shit.
Also less funny stuff. The Imperial machine cult is taken from the Foundation Trilogy. The Tyrannids are a mashup of Starship Troopers' Bugs and Aliens movies from the late 80s. Eldar are just space elves, with the name taken from Tolkien. Chaos was straight ripped off from Michael Moorcock (and early Warhammer also included Order as their counterbalance).
It goes on.
@@wombatgirl997 Ghazgull Mag Uruk Thraka. I actually only get that now thanks to you, *31 years on*
Holy cow this really brings me back
This was soooo cool! I love the ridiculousness that is old hammer please please please keep it up!â€â€
You make great content, well done and thanks đ
Glad you enjoy it!
I remember being blown away reading this BatRep
What a brilliant video! You give context to the battle, the presentation is excellent (I love those old battle report maps, and you brought it to life), and the analysis was interesting. Subscribed!
Glad you enjoyed it, it takes a while to put one together so I have shorter videos coming in the meantime
Nice video. Great narration. Consider making more of these.
They are strongly considered
I started playing WH40K back in â93. Man this brought me back. Awesome video!
It maybe because I am nostalgic to those old times but ⊠I love your battle report style.
Your job is great.
You can even adapt this style to curent battle reports.
What an amazing video idea. The nostalgia vibes from this was amazing. I miss all the wacky stuff
Some of those Rogue Trader models really express something rare and special. I don't know enough about sculpture to put it succinctly.
Please do more! I still have a lot of old White Dwarf and remember reading them over and overâŠwonderful pre internet memories!
Wonderful re-enactment of a classic! Great video!
Thanks, I have a lot of cool stuff planned
Great recap, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
This was fun to relive! Good work animating the map!
Excellent video! Really brings the battle reports to life and makes them more comparable with real games of 2nd ed Ive started playing
This is absolutely amazing!
Thanks
Great work! đ
Love your vids. The combination of wit, insight into the game and dachshunds is the best 2nd Ed stuff Iâve seen. Make more. đđđđ
Oh my God Emperor! This is very nostalgic!
Keep up the great retro content!
This is such a flood of nostalgia. My first battle report is Space Wolves vs Tyranids from WD 205. I remember every turn from it vividly.
Well researched and awesome illustration of the battle report!
Amazing, love the old aesthetic. Subscribed!
Great stuff!
Well, this was a delight to watch. My actual 40k gameplay experience is limited to the latest edition of Kill Team, but there's such a sense of whimsy from this time period, from the rules to the playstyle, that I need to see more. Subbed!
I remember this battle. Well done. You get a sub!
severely underrated channel. subbed.
Oh man, I remember reading this battle report! Feeling my age now.
holy shit the nostalgia. i still have my 2nd ed tyranids codex, but i dont remember the rules and dont have the rulebook so it all looks insane to me now. :D
Yesss please please more of this.
