I successfully replaced my VVTI gear last weekend on 09 Matrix using this video as reference. Runs like a champ, startup rattle gone. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thanks for comment
The timing marks are set 3 links before the orange mark is that how it’s suppose to be
Does the VVTi gear needs to unlock before tightening the bolt..
@@cesarcampos8663 I rotated my engine a few times and the factory painted links lined up on the gear marks.
Did you change both Exhaust and Intake camshaft gear ?
I just replaced the exhaust and intake gears on my 2010 Pontiac Vibe. 140K miles on this 1.8L Toyota engine. Thanks for the great video.
Be careful so that the rocker/followers don't fall off when installing the cams. I took my time and spotted one had fallen off. Whew.
The parts I used are:
Exhaust: 13070-0T011
Intake: 13050-0T050
If you rotate the engine a few times the factory timing marks on the chain will line up with the marks on the gears.
Other than that, if you have not done something like this before, just watch this video, read the comments, maybe find some other videos or instructions and get a comfort level before you dig in. Take a lot of photos with your phone before disassembling as a reference to where everything connects.

did the intake 130500t050 was locked or unlocked when you purchased it ? how do you lock it ? thanks
The zip time on the timing chain was honestly the smartest move i've seen. It makes it so you don't have to remove the timing cover to work around the chain while removing the cam shafts. Amazing!
Thanks for comment dear
It's amazing how mechanics can easily understand each other without a word being spoken.
I also used this video as a reference to replace my Intake vvti gear. I did it in approximately 3 hours and took my time
I used an aftermarket gear from standard automotive vvt530. The heavy deep timing marks didn't line up but the light shallow timing mark did... it also lined up with the yellow dot timing mark in the middle of the camshaft. Remember to torque the camshaft timing gear bolt to 40 ft lbs with the gear unlocked. Then you can lock the gear before installation of the cam shaft.
All in all a successful project, and my 09 corolla S is purring like a kitten on startup.

i want to do this but watching and reading stuff like this makes me feel like im reading a different language 😪😂
Any information regarding Toyota Corolla Altis 2005 1zz Fe swapped to 2zr with cvti? Any reviews!
Not only do the job , but tell customers to change the oil at least every 3 To 5 Thousand miles and those gears will last more. It’s all in the oil . To keep all parts running great . Thanks for the video, great job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏
Thanks for comment
If only a rattle at start up, does this job need to be done? Is there a danger of valve train failure of some sort? What's up with specifying torque for sprocket to cam bolt @11:00 and then using a breaker bar? Thanks for posting.
Just for reference, the service bulletin from Toyota about this issue is T-SB-0087-09 and the Toyota part number for the intake camshaft gear is 130500T050
What us that braket you added and where can I fine it ?

Please help Dr! Thanks for the video I've been watching a re-watching since I've gone wrong somewhere. I'm at crank, no start on my 09 Matrix 130k after changing only the intake cam gear. I made sure to torque to 40 ft lbs before locking and lined up the orange links with the marks on the gear. I rotated it by hand many times to make sure of timing. I then re-assembled. After cranking and no start I check compression and I got: Cyl1:40psi Cyl2: 30 psi and then 60psi on 3 and 4. I then sprayed carb and choke and put some penetrating fluid down the spark plug hole and compressed the valves, especially on the exhaust side and cranked the engine. This raised compression (wet) to: Cyl1:90 2:60psi 3&4: 70. The car ran before I began the job is there anything I'm missing? Is the low compression causing the crank no start?
If the engine timing mark is correct, it should start even with low compression
@@MayoCarsDR Thanks for getting back quickly! I now realize what I did. When I removed the camshafts, I must have missed a link and then rotated it and then tried to use the orange links after some rotation. I had no way of checking the yellow link down below. That must be off. I'm trying to figure out how to check that without removing the timing cover. I think I'm going to use a borescope to see the yellow link through the CKS hole and then align up top. I haven't seen any videos by anyone about aligning the three links without timing cover removal. Any suggestions?

18:30 forgot to attach the metal bracket to clip the cable afterwards. Not a big deal though. Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful 👌👍

Any reason to replace any gaskets, cams, the tensioner, or any other parts while you’re in there?
Also, what is the part number for the chain guide (if that’s what it is called)?
Hi, what is white sealant you applied on the gasket face @19:58 before putting the valve cover back to the housing please?
Engine celicon
Gracias te entendí mejor que en los videos donde hablan.
Thanks for comment dear
When installing the cams and to pu on timing does the marks have to be on orange links on chain or 3 links before
If you turn the engine over enough the factory colored links will line up. That is what I did. It may take 4 or more revolutions to get them to line up if you don't want to paint your own marks when on tdc.
Awesome vid...gearing up to do 09 vibe thanks
Edit: chasing my tail around trying to get the chain "marks" in the same spots as the vid....till I realize the "marks" don't matter as they are for initial set up only...oh boy lol
Thanks for comment
Every 270 rotations they’ll line up.
@@kennethricher45 Is it actually 270 rotations? I knew it would take a lot of rotations but I thought it would be less than the number of teeth on one of the cam gears!
No 270 degree... its like 2 rotations. 😁 I will die making 270 rotation... image if you missed 🤣
Why did you replace both cam gears? I thought only the intake cam gear has a service bulletin being defective at 80K+ miles on cold starts. Also, after the new Cam gear is reattached to the camshaft and before reinstalling back in the head, do you need to unlock or lock the cam gear for timing purposes?
Thanks for comment,I changed both at the request of the customer and there is no need to lock and unlock them, they are automatically locked.
@@MayoCarsDR so you don't to lock the intake gear after installation ?
does this apply to gear with part # 130500T050 ? thanks for help
Hi and thank you for video. big help.
Toyota came up with updated version of intake cam gear with item # 130500T050. I was told it comes locked. I have to unlock it, torque it on camshaft, then lock it !! is this correct ? i am confused here
There is no need to unlock this part just install it and start it
i just cant understand why in some video the chain mark line up with the line on the gear and here there is a gap of 3 beetween the line on the gear and the mark on the chain , why you didnt line them
Why not do one at a time ? Then you don’t have to zip tie the chain up.
Sir good morning may i know how much the torque pressure of the two bolts on bearing black color and the silver in ft.lbs or any. thank you.pls. reply.Have a good day.

Hello, is this possible on a 4zz motor That has a single VVT-i gear ?
Yes
Not sure what you were doing with your timing but if it doesn’t line up just keep rotating. Every 270 turns it’ll line up.
To the right or left?
Some videos on CZcams say you have to unlock the cam sprocket before installing how legit is that?can someone explain please
No
Thank you. Excellent work.
Now why changed exhaust camshaft gear ? I thought only intake camshaft gear required.
Please advise. Thanks
It is better to do both and change it once and then forget it
What Size Wrench are you using on the harmonic balancer pulley bolt?
VVTI gear bolts size 14mm
@@MayoCarsDR i was talking about the crank pulley which is 19mm the hardway.
Just be safe and replace the chain too while you're at it.
Do the cam gears need to be unlocked before tightening to the camshaft
Thanks for comment,No need to unlock
@@MayoCarsDR The car throws a ecu code when driven, if not unlocked from my understanding,
He doesn't know what you are talking about.
What happened to the top chain guide bracket? The 2 bolts were there but the guide and bracket were not.
The upper sleeper was not installed by a mechanic, may have forgotten
The 2.4 had defective rings hopefully these aren't the same. Or this won't be the first phaser replacement
Is the location for timing marks supposed to be set the orange link
Yes
Cylinder 3 misfire, replaced Ignition coil on cylinder 3. Checked code again cylinder 4 misfire, changed all spark plugs and ignition coils. Found oil on spark plugs, thought bad valve cover gaskets the culprit. Changed all valve cover gaskets now engine cranks but won't start. Took to toyota said low compression and that I should replace engine. Could this problem be a timing issue alone? Timing chain and guide seem tight and are intact. I haven't checked the alignment. But was running fine before except the misfires. I'm confused please help....... Need the car for my business need to know to scrap or fix. I have a mechanic that can fix if its timing related for fairly inexpensive. please help.
Ok
Thanks for comment
If the engine piston compressor is low then its engine overhaul will be required
Check your engine speed sensor and your fuel injectors.
What are the symptoms of the exhaust side cam being faulty??
With the help of computer tester you can check which VVTI is working and which is not
Thank you for this video my friend. I'm in the middle of this job. Why did you remove the small circular oil gasket and then replace it? It doesn't look like you replaced it with a new gasket. Did you just remove and re-install, or did you flip it over? IIRC the gasket is not symmetrical from front to back.
Can you tell me the time at what time?
@@MayoCarsDR 19:43
He just flipped it over
Wow 🤠🍺👍
Mine is like that.. I need to get it replaced too
Thanks for comment
Great teaching video.
Did you lock the timing gear after tightening the bolt ?
Yes
So I got a P0012 code after replacing both cams any help?
How can I fix a P0012 problem and where should I start?
Clear trouble code from ECM and check to see if the check engine light or MIL turns on again.
Check engine oil for proper viscosity and level.
Check/replace oil filter is passed its operational lifetime.
Check/replace bank 1 intake valve camshaft oil control valve.
check timing chain marks
Yes I’ve done all these steps and the code continues coming back
great video, i thought that the cam gear had to be "unlocked" when torquing the bolt and "unlocked when installed in the head, then rotated to the locked position . Can someone confirm this, thanks
There is no need to do this as it automatically locks and unlocks
Per the workshop manual the intake cam phaser needs to be unlocked when torquing and then locked after torquing otherwise it could bind and stick causing vvt issues and check engine light
@@1978havens cool , thanks for the confirmation👍
@@1978havens How do you lock it please ?
the intake gear part #130500t050 can't be locked by turn with hand. looks like there is knob and 2 grooves. let me know please. thanks
12:10 was that gear oil you sprayed?
Engine oil
@2:57
What is the wrench size (MM) for that??

@@MayoCarsDR @10:33. What wrench size (MM) do you use if you don't have the adjustable wrench?

BRO your tightening a locked gear. I guess you have a lot of luck on your side. What led you to think both gears are bad?
the customer wanted both replaced and it's better to replace both than just one anyway so you don't have to worry about either of them for the next three decades
What is the purpose of replacing VVIT Gear tell me dear thank.
Bad VVTI sound
czcams.com/video/SADHZo-9XMk/video.html
What will happen if we dont replace bad vvt gears?
If you don't change it, it will affect the average fuel consumption and there will come a time when it will make so much noise that you change it and it may even break.
Yaris engine noise what can be the cause
Send me a video
what ever happened to the chain guide? It was missing in the beginning of the video 😮

this person at the beginning of the video showed how the chain should have been placed according to the marks, but put the new one not according to the marks
This is because I did not remove the timing chain cover or set the timing chain marks but the timing chain setting is correct.

Your chain markings don’t match up to where they need to be.
czcams.com/video/KrXPdzJilDA/video.html
It's not about the yellow markings on the chain. It's about how many chain links are in betwwee the grooves on the phasors. This guy is a pro. Do you think you're going to teach him something he doesn't already know. Sit back, sip your coffe or beer, pick your nose, and watch the master work.
