    I think the most amazing use of this robot will be to find a way to attach it as a prosthetic to a person with no legs, it looks really stable and self balanced, smart living like motion, very ergonomic, small for all the features it holds and looks very futuristic, I can't wait to see Cassie in a movie.

      That was my first thought when I've seen it: "Are there any comments about Metal Gear"?
      It's pretty close to Metal Gear Walker from MGSV, though, and might work if upscaled properly. Also, it can give support to handicapped people in the way like Huey's servo-legs in MGSV.
      I'm really hoping that instead of weaponizing robots Metal Gear-style humanity will wisely choose to use them to help people outside of military industry.

    I can't help but think this is a massive stepping-stone towards giving people back the use of their legs.
    People seem focused on exo-suits, or prosthetics - which are absolutely wonderful, but if there is a system for taking care of complex tasks such as quickly rebalancing when something unexpected happens, it would become much more useful.

    The versatility of this robotic movement would also be fantastic in movies. I'm sure the Stan Winston special FX Studio would be able to find some uses for it. Not to mention the animatronix combination could seriously improve some "tied down" robotics or followed by heavy cables and power units or battery packs. A different mindset for different applications could even propel your research forward

    OK, why is it important for a robot to have only two legs to eventually check if there are people in a building that is in fire? For that purpose there are so much better solutions than two-legged robots, but if (when) this gets better people who lost their legs could be again on their own feet and that is promising. Keep up the good work :)

      A human world needs a humanlike robot to navigate it.

    Nice work! Factor in that a human's head and arms act as counterweights to assist with balance. Stomach muscles are always working to control these subtle shifts in balance. Also, unlike a toddler's walk and run cycles, experienced children and adults know to shift their weight forward when accelerating and back when decelerating.

    Sad to see how the talent, knowledge, immagination and energy of these smart young guys is being used for what will ultimately become a machine for warfare. The talk about firefighting etc. is just a smoke screen. DARPA is the main funder for these projects, and DARPA is not a charity or humanitarian organization

      its a sad truth, but what would you suggest they do then? not develop it? yes the army will want to use whatever new tech that can give them an edge or changes the rules. but at some point this stuff WILL find its way into the more noble applications of which the designers dream.
      its kind of the question though.. will this thing save more people than it will kill..?

      So true. Besides, what would two pair of legs that are hardly able to walk be able to achieve in a real burning building anyway, how does it deal with doors? If you need to deal with uneven terrain then drones are much, much better.

    mean Boston Dynamics does great work, but is really amazing. Or rather it has my interest. People can joke about terminators, metal gears, and son on. But to see a robot with legs like these, walking on it's own, I can easily see a a future were we have a Jurassic Park with androids instead of clones and then some.

      Yes, yes I have. Atlas is more human in form while Cassie here is working with something more Avian and thus closer to the theropod form. I think (or hope ) the robot from BD you meant was Handle in which sure I could see what you mean by the bee in legs and arms.

      and add hands

    • @Lodosswar100
      @Lodosswar100 Před 6 lety +7

      Not a good idea, bigger feet are heavier which slows the response time and increases the energy requirement. It works well in nature because of weight to power ratios and the amazingly complex structure of feet and hands provides an incredible amount of articulation and minute balance options. Eventually robots may end up with complex feet but for now the technology is not really there to make them worth equipping. A large foot surface would actually require an increase in size in the hip articulation to compensate for the larger available surface area and increase the overall size of the bot. Little pointy nubs are just as good and most of the time significantly better for low articulating systems as they require smaller and less stable points of contact with the ground to keep the system upright.
