People thinking the rent it’s cheap. It’s not, that’s actually expensive. Income in Mexico is way low.
Housing prices fluctuate wildly through the country and there is a range of housing for every income level. I live in Mérida and for 500USD a month, I have a 2,400-square-foot detached house on a large lot just 10 minutes from the historical centre, but a house like this in the south part of the city would easily be half the cost. And I know folks in Monterrey who would think this CDMX rent is inexpensive.
Depends who you are referring to?
If this person's can afford this is because their job pays them very well.
Unfortunately just like any country with out an education the pay is way to low.
I guessed this because these apartments are THE DREAM! Dreams don't come cheap unfortunately!
@@LimoneSoda yes. I had the opportunity to visit Mexico city and visit family. Totally loved the people and neighborhood. Saludos from California.
@@eddiem384 I've lived in Mexico for several years and there seems to be a parallel economy here for the middle class and wealthy versus the poor.
I really see it in my city of Mérida, with the city split between the rich north and the poor south. Everything in the south, from houses to utility services, is priced for those folks who make only a few thousand pesos a month. In the north, things are priced for those who make tens of thousands of pesos a month. But we all have the same basic quality of life -- the same potential and opportunity to own a home that meets today's standards of hygiene, to send kids to decent schools, to get adequate healthcare.
I'm not saying that there aren't parts of Mexico, or even Mérida, where there are people who are in absolute desperate poverty, just as there are Mexicans who are ridiculously rich. But the purchasing power of a family here that makes 5,000 a month versus 50,000 is the same when it comes to basic things -- they just have to shop within their economy.
My cleaning lady and I were talking about this recently. Between her and her husband, they make just under 6,000 pesos a month. It's easy to imagine them living in some hovel with a dirt floor, right? Well, they own a house almost as large as mine in the south part of the city, and it's nicer, too, as it's newer. There are tons of programs to help Mexicans become homeowners, regardless of their income, and Mexico has one of the highest rates of homeownership in the world.
TL:DR: Stop looking just at the salary, but rather at the purchasing power for that salary. The disparity with salaries in countries like the US then becomes a lot smaller.
Its nice to see Mexico without the awful yellow filter
🤣🤣🤣
so true!!
yellow filter matlab ka kya sandarbh hai :P
lol
Haha accurate
I’m really enjoying this series, it’s interesting to see how others live in other parts of the world.
You mean how the upper middle class lives there
@@cockycookie1 do you have a problem with that?
@@cockycookie1 Exactly, half the population in the city live on rent around 5kMXN.
This isn’t a good portrayal of the average person in these cities.
@@cms3000 not a "problem", it's just not realistic. I live in other Latin American country and we know that's not the reality for most people in our region.
I went on a 4 month course to Mexico City and fell in love with it. Soooooo much to do and see. The art and cultural scene is amazing . I also love Mexican people ..... they were very welcoming. I went with a group of 12 people, all of us black and no reports of racism until we traveled to Chile. Now that’s another story.
😳😳 what happened
I'm curious. What did happen in chile 😧
Yeah what happened?! Tell us the details.
Sadly I’m not surprised Chile is mostly white/mestizo country. Even me as a meztiza/Afro Colombian would be weary to go and it’s sad. This isn’t saying that everyone will have a bad experience but it sucks that it even happens
@@ldr11233 thank you for the insight. I will keep that i. Mind if I travel there.
Among all the featured apartments, Mexico City has the best value for your money. Mafer's place is a steal to be honest even if she finds it expensive.
Yes and no. Rent is cheaper than Europe or the major cities of the USA. But building infrastructure and support systems if the event of failure are not on the same par.
@@swicheroo1 western europe maybe, it looks expensive to me
@@PlaceboEllie My main point is about infrastructure--building safety, codes, fire infrastructure, sewage. Mexico City, for instance, sits in earthquake territory and it periodically gets decimated. And the city's leadership still permits the kind of building that will fall apart. There's more to questions of 'value' than simple cost
.
@@swicheroo1 okay but that just compounds the point, it's twice as much as rent in my city and the infrastructure is terrible so it's even worse value
@@swicheroo1 actually. Yes, some parts of Europe are expensive, but then you have some that are extremely cheap. Speaking from experience living in Europe and once in Mexico; I think Mexico is expensive. I had a better and less expensive life in Europe.
6:24 is the most Latin American thing ever: storing your pots and pans in the oven!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Based on my experience living and travelling in Mexico over the past six years, I have a theory about that for Mexicans at least -- kitchens that generally do not have any storage combined with a culture of not using the oven. So it's perfectly logical.
Also Eastern European
Where else would we store them?lol
@@SanDeeBabii Americans think that their style of kitchens with wall to ceiling cabinets are standard the world over. So why would you put pots in the oven when there are so many cabinets? Don't mind them. As my comment above says, your method is perfectly logical. :)
I didn’t know that was a Latin American thing. I’m German Italian living in Illinois and growing up we always stored our cookware in the oven and dishwasher (broken most of my life lol)
It's affordable if you have a good job or an expat/working in the country for business if you're American or from Europe. For the Average Mexica this is NOT affordable.
Americans from which countries?
Now go to Ecatepec, that´ll be fun
Sí hombre, lo que viven millones la mayoría de los mexicanos.
It would be really helpful if we knew what their job is and how much they earn to understand context
I love this series. Watching from Kenya. You should do Nairobi one day
From Kenya too and I think we're being ripped off over here
I know these are expensive, but they are really nice. I would love to see more of Mexico City or other cities in this country.
Great series. Would love to see an episode from Lagos,Nigeria
Rent in Mexico is really expensive. The apartments shown on this video are actually for the middle-high class. The average pay in Mexico is about $5/day. Apart from this, mostly everything in Mexico is expensive. The last apartment is the only one that comes the closest to the average Mexican home.
I’m glad that they showed this side of Mexico, simply because many have a misconception that it’s “bad” everywhere, when it’s not completely true. I understand that not everyone can afford certain places shown in this video. Other cities and states are probably cheaper, and different.
Yo voy a terminar suicidandome con esta situación
You should do Guadalajara, Mexico! It’s beautiful and really interesting what you can get. I paid 12,500 MXN and had a 3 bd, 3bth apartment with two patios, really miss it
People may think these rents may be cheap, yes they are cheap when they are converted to Dollars, but if you were to be living in Mexico you would get paid in Pesos. The dollar right now is pretty high but if it was low like in 2005 the rents would be equivalent to $1,200 USD 2,300 & 1,800 USD plus utilities. Penthouses in upscale neighborhoods in Mexico City rent can go up to $7,000-$12,000 dollars a month
Paying 15k MXN a month is incredibly expensive for most people. Living in Santa Fe is something most people only can dream about.
Santa Fe is horrible 😂 no, thank you. I would rather live anywhere else in the city.
it’s so interesting to see people living in the same city as me but in way better apartments
I lived in CDMX 9 yrs, the best years of my life.
This is my favorite episode so far, looove the colors in the apartments! 😻 You should do Zagreb in Croatia. There are a lot of crazy apartments there
These ppl make a lot of money to be able to live in these apartments. Most people on Mexico City make like 300 pesos a day
"A lot of people" is not the same as "most people". There is actually a lot of demand for real estate. Younger educated people are searching for apartments and condos.
but a website stated 33,200 pesos is the average monthly income for mexican. it's actually not that bad
@@Kylelongwest i really wouldn’t believe that. I know salaries are higher in CDMX but not at that level. Or maybe the average is skewed given the large millionaire community present there

ALL OF THESE APARTMENTS ARE GORGEOUS
Wow! Love this series, really enlightening to see how people of a similar age live elsewhere!
Three lovely apartments! If I were young, I would definitely seriously consider living in Mexico City. Spacious, airy, colorful, with lots of greenery. The rents are relatively inexpensive, from an American POV. This series is very interesting, bringing a glimpse of life in other places. It would also be a valuable source of historical documents for future cultures.
I am so glad you decided not to because foreigners from extractivists countries just end up gentrifying our cities 🤢🤢🤢
You should definitely do Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia next!
At 5:10, the summary says that Isa lives in a 2 bed/2 bath, but she clearly says that she lives in a 1 bed/1 bath...
YES I was looking to see if anyone else caught that!!!
Next time can you guys ask the people to tell us what they work as? I’m trying to know how they can afford all this lol
all of them work in buzzfeed except for the last one, is the girlfriend that works in buzzfeed (not on camera)
$15,000 is a ton of money for a rent for most of the people in Mexico. Even for a couple. I know it is not much, but most of the people can not afford to pay that sum just to sleep. So paying 25k or 40k is totally out of reach, you are privileged and blessed thank God, so enjoy!
I love this programme, watching how others live and seeing these apartments with so much character.
♨️This was absolute perfect, I love the fact that you included some of the areas not always highlighted but so beautiful 😍 great series I truly enjoyed it.
Oooh Italy next!
Yes!! And Greece
I love this! Usually I'll use Google Earth to street view cities and stuff but this is WAY better. I really like that you talk to people who live there too.
Watching from Hong Kong, every apartment shown in this video are HUGE & posh compare to Hong Kong average apartment ::))
Average income is 5,000 pesos for a decent job shes pays 3x that. In conclusion that’s not cheap at all .
Can you please cite your sources?
@@AHPSC i was born in mexico but grew up in the states lived in mexico for 8 years . Those are my sources but im sure you can do a simple search and find out .
@@citlalivillegas9298 I have lived in both countries but that doesn't qualify me to make an informed statemen on what people can afford. My point is, because it is Mexico, many people tend to give opinions that are basically a result of Hollywood movies. That's all.
You’re so right it
lol that's not true.
I live a few blocks from Angel de la Independencia. I have been living in Puerta Alameda REVILLAGIGEDO Street, and so...LIFE IT'S AWESOME MEXICO IT'S MY HOMELAND NOW.
When y'all doing some African countries?
Exactly
Vancouver BC! Love this series...
Ok, I’m from Mexico and these flats are massive! Might need to consider retiring here
Absolutely lovely apartments, I’m in California wanting to go visit beautiful Mexico City now 😭
You should do Belfast or Dublin in Ireland
These apartments are so beautiful!
Wow, absolutely beautiful homes.
Yeah this is just the high-end parts of Mexico City. I live in CDMX but in a more *affordable* neighbourhood, where the houses are definitely not like these. I don't think I've ever been to this fancy apartments during the time I have lived here.
Social mobility in Mexico City is fast paced. There's great demand for real estate.
What neighborhood do you live in? Are you from Mexico or foreign?
Which neighborhood do you live in that's cheaper? I'm moving to Mexico in January!!
@@sidni.d5989 I used to live in Miramontes, which is in the south of the city. Really recommend the neighbourhood!
Those are not high-end parts of Mexico City, well except for Santa Fe. They´re more like hipster neighbourhoods where you get small apartments in really old buildings for a higher price than they´re actually worth. The young artsy crowd loves living there, though.
I love love knowing how each person has their own story with their home
Do Saigon, Vietnam next !! Highly recommend
Wow! Those apartments are beautiful!
This house is so much cheaper and nicer than our 2 bhk in Mumbai 😭
Mexico City is the best so far.
15k pesos is like someone’s entire monthly salary 🥵🥵
Bruh, I wish I was paid that much a month
That's 750 US. That's nothing for an awesome apartment!
Lolll that oven filled with pans; my house is the same way, we're Colombian
Hipodromo Condensa y por el Ejercito Militar...Awesome places too!
These are great ❤ I love Mexico City. You should also check out other places like La Juárez, Coyoacán, Santa María la Ribera and Roma :) there are many apartments that are way more cheap btw. These examples are not bad, but more expensive than average.
Love this series! Keep em coming!
I would also love that Double Sink stuff there.
Mafer - tienes el apartamento mas cool de todos.
Daayyymmm Mexico be looking good ... As always tho 😘
Hope you can make a San Diego version!! Would love to be a part of it 😊 I’m such a huge BuzzFeed fan!
Two episodes for the Tijuana-San Diego area :)
You should a series of what’s it like to live in Kampala as well...
Love the series, do Brazil
The bathrooms are so nice.
Last home was soo Indian 💗😊😌
If you think that's cheap, check out other neighborhoods, like "COAPA" in the Southside, you could find an apartment for around 300$ in a nice area with lots of parks, shopping malls, movie theaters, etc... there are many of those cheap nice neighborhoods in that City...
En Coapa están como en 12 al mes, hasta los de interés social están como en 9. En 6 están los de la CTM. Es un asco todo tan caro 🤢🤢🤢
This same size apartment in Hong Kong will cost USD$4000/month upwards.
Please do Cape Town next!
Please do Helsinki, Durban and Ho Chi Minh next!
The more i learn about rent prices in other parts of the world, the less inclined I am to want to pay CA rent prices 🤪
Yeah you guys are god damn insane, like 1500 bucks for a studio apartment, I can get much bigger places for 800 bucks a month in Tijuana, and I do, I work in SD and live in TJ, just like an hour for crossing in the morning. But I save a criminal amount of money on rent.
@@ericktellez7632 most Americans don’t want to live in Tijuana though.
@@EMVelez-qb1zu
And most Americans dont want to cross state lines and move somewhere else. I am just talking about my own personal experience 🤷♂️
this is how the 1% in mexico live... not the general population at all.
Do one of Athens, Greece :)
Wow, these are EXPENSIVE. The cheapest one is like three times an average monthly salary, I'm a teacher and the rent on the cheapest one is 2k higher than my salary
This compared to the USA is extremely cheap for a very nice updated large apartment
It’s obviously that these are equivalent to flats that would cost 3-4K here in London. Gives me a good idea of the wage gap there in comparison. These people are high earners!
I live in South Wales and in Cardiff for £700 a month you get a tiny two bed flat. No balcony, no rooftop, no garden, no nothing.
We’ve just bought a house which is four bedrooms with a garden and the mortgage is less than our rent was. Madness.
These apartments in this video are just amazing and the amount they pay for them a month would get you nothing like this over here in the UK,
Yes, they are
This is so unrealistic these people are the 1% in Mexico City this is just like showing you my $10,000 apartment in Manhattan us Latino immigrants in the USA know this 🙄🙄🙄🙄 please show a real Mexico City apartment
Actually they are the new tenants with good paying jobs they are the 32% of Mexico city people . Unfortunately this are the present and future. in a part is good but its unfortunate they have the mind of a millennial. This drives poor people out of their own homes. This is why even for some of us in the US can't afford a place in the city of our own country. Some of this homes are over 150-400k us dollars But this is the current mexico and specially in Mexico city. They are taking over and the prices there now are ridiculously high . Thats they have people coming to the big city to work.its hard to find low prices in this neighborhood. And yes regular paying job in the city is $200 pesos per day. Equal to $10.. us dollars they are paying more than 2 persons make in one day worth of work.with a decent jobs.
I think it’s kind of cool to show a different side of Mexico though - totally agree and hear what you’re saying but stereotypically you only ever see the low income side of Mexico so it’s nice to show the opposite.
they prob didn’t want to play into the stereotype that Mexico is just poor
That's how most apartments are like in the city lol... like the city is more rich than you'd think
They really out here living better than London and New York.
What a great series! Really interesting! And that rooftop 😍😍😍
they have ~style~ :)
These apartments are great and SO cheap!
That's it!! I'm moving to Mexico City.
Wow so much space 😍😍. We only have shoe boxes in Toronto
This series is really very addictive!

I think every latinx fam uses the oven for storage. Lol. I'm from PR and it's always full of pans.
I'm from Brazil and we do this too! lol

Very nice apartment on par with what we have here in the States. I have to say though, the air quality in Mexico City was just terrible when I visited. And this is coming from an Angeleno!

A studio in my city is double that price with no amenities 😔
Wow! Who would have thought that the rents in Mexico City would be less than the tiny little town I live in in Pennsylvania? I guess I’ll be moving! 🤣
