Knew a lad who trialled at West Ham, he's a coach at Newcastle now. Told me, there's a 15 year old lad there who is unbelievable, name of Joe Cole. Ran rings around everybody. But he was humble and his parents used to take any his money and give him an allowance to keep him grounded.
I knew another guy whose son was an emerging player at Newcastle. Was featured in matchday programmes and was just about to break through. He wanted to but a Beemer, souped up thing. Insurance more than the car, that kind of thing. His dad bought him a Renault Clio or something like that and put a tracker on it! Unfortunately something happened at newcastle and he was released very suddenly. Can all change in a flash
I do wonder whether sports should follow what's common practice with child stars in the entertainment industry and have all the earnings/wages of players who are under 18 put into a fund of some kind, then it gets paid out to them when they turn 18. Not just to stop the players using it irresponsibly, but also their parents from stealing it to try and make their kids 'humble'.
Some great points made, but 20 years ago players from the 1980's etc would have been saying the same about young players in Fosters & Bents era.
I think these rules should be throughout the club not just the academy, I see these pictures of players showing up Bentley's and such. I live in Toronto, and our baseball team the Blue Jays give their players a Honda accord or CRV to drive to the stadium. Keeps the egos in check, especially the ego's of the social media generation
I think the jobs are good because it keeps the young guys humble, which is ultimately good for their careers as it helps with self discipline.

If the clubs do have to pay young players high wages to attract them, why don't they put in place a savings scheme where the players get a percentage of the money to live on and the rest into a seperate account that they don't have immediate access to until a certain age.
They do already, it’s their pension….

I suppose employment law you can't but i think they all get access to a financial advisor as well (the top clubs) if they use it who knows? Thing is its a catch 22. 1% literally make it so half of them will say they do all the social media stuff to promote gear and get paid for it so its another form of investment but it is crazy. Imagine living in London on 10k a week as a 18 year old the skies the limit.

Young players today think they’ve made it simply by being in the academy because the money they’re making is ridiculous even before reaching the first team and I think thats reflected in the desire and hunger or lack there of these young players have. Rooney said recently that when he made the first team he wanted to impress guys like Keane, Scholes, Giggs more than Sir Alex

They are taught to live lean and mean before they become millionaires. Yes, some are millionaires when their apprenticeship is over. I jave heard of some of these soon to be millionaires cooking up the horse oats and buying only the milk. MUFC could not transition because there was no passing of the torch in how to develop according to the culture & standards of the club.
