At its launch in 2010, the Toyota Auris hybrid's importance lay less in the HSD (or Hybrid Synergy Drive) technology it carried - that was simply borrowed from Toyota's existing Prius - and more in the fact that this was the first time we'd seen such a futuristic powertrain so affordably and un-showily deployed in an ordinary family hatchback. Virtually identically to its conventional petrol and diesel siblings, here was a car that didn't shout its owner's green credentials from the rooftops. Here was the first real stage of the Toyota masterplan - to take hybrid motoring mainstream.
No more optimistic premium pricing based on buying into vague celebrity-driven notions of eco-friendliness. This was hard-nosed hybrid motoring that confronted the diesel establishment head-on, offering a compelling package too sensible for family hatchback buyers to ignore. That was Toyota's take. But was the market ready for it? Sales weren't exactly stratospheric, but there are some very well looked after used examples on the market. Here's how to track one down.

My Auris is now 14 years old and runs like day one. It has even the first hybrid battery and it's tested recently and still fine.
Great little car that never breaks down !

Brilliant and very detailed review. I have the 2012 version of the Auris Hybrid. I have about 124 or 125K miles on the Odo. It's a truly fantastic car, and it costs me a lot less to run a normal petrol or diesel version. I get about 70 to 85 mpg both city and sometimes on the highway. I get slightly less on the highway. She usually does about 67 to 70 motorway which is truly excellent, and I'm sure that's much better fuel economy than most normal cars on the motorway. This car also doesn't have a normal gearbox or CVT it's an eCVT transmission. Overall an awesome car.

Thanks for the detailed review. Going to buy one now. As you mentiond - "A car that makes mor sense than style statement."

    Hello there!
Thank you very much for the useful video! I'm not very familiar with the hybrid cars and honestly wasn't really interested in them until recently. I have fully committed myself to EVs, and began to think about converting retro (and not so old) ICE cars.
However after watching your video and a few others I began to think it makes sense to include in this group for conversion hybrid cars too. They are after all half electric to put it this way. For example Toyota/Lexus have some models which have powerful enough electric motors to move the car on electricity only, in this case is it possible to remove the ICE from the car and use it as electric only? Of Course battery capacity has to be increased and few other changes to be done.
My question is does it make sense for this conversion and if it does, could you please point which models are the best candidates?
    Regards,
    Thanks!

Someone on a toyota forum has one just hit 250k miles and going strong. Think it's on original battery and very little if anything required than usual maintenance
