I have a similar story with a dog. Dad and I were driving by a neighbor's farm when we saw one of his cows on the road, so dad pulls into the driveway and tells me to knock on the door and tell let the neighbor know. As I was walking up to the porch, a collie that was laying down with his head on his paws started to growl, I slowed a bit, then he raised his head, I tip toed up the steps, then the dog stood up, I got too scared and decided to go back to the car, then the dog started walking after me, I picked up the pace a little and the dog started running, so I started running, and right before getting to the car the dog bit the back of my leg. Once in the car my dad asked "did you knock?", and I explained how I couldn't. So he gets out, walks right up to the door and knocked, the dog did nothing! My dad later explained it was because he showed the dog no fear, didn't slow down, didn't speed up, just walked with certainty.

Standing your ground with aggressive commands has always worked for me. It's not a sure thing though, especially with more than one, but running is almost certainly giving them the green light to be aggressive.
