  • I went on a journey to understand how the Fuel Torque O2 controller works. After speaking to Rex Fleiter from Fuel Torque I bought one, installed it on my Husky 701 and took it for a test run.
You can message Rex at / www.fueltorque.com.au
    Or via email at: fueltorque@gmail.com
Note: I paid full price (AUD $220) for my Controller and believe it is money well spent. I don't get any commissions from Rex, I like promoting his product because I believe in it.

Enjoyed the video! Interesting product. One way or another, it is pretty much mandatory to do something about the excessively lean part throttle closed loop mapping the 690 platform is forced to ship with. Big thumpers should rip off the bottom and the 690 does if fed enough fuel. I'm in the US and have a 701 Enduro with the Rottweiler dongle and PC6 with their map, trimmed airbox snorkel and a Yosh R-77 can. It did run notably better with just the dongle, but with the mapped PC6 and the can, the Kraken is really unleashed. My biggest challenge now is not going to jail because I like to do wheelies and they do come easy now 😆
While it helps a lot on it's own, the real purpose of the simple RT dongle is to take the O2 sensor out of the equation so the ECU won't "fight" the Power Commander. Adding a Power Commander with no dongle and the O2 sensor in place is pointless, as the ECU will adjust to lean out any settings in the PC back to the 14.7 AFR target.
It seems to me that if one just wants to run a dongle this device is the best way to go, but if they want to run a fully mapped PC6 setup, the Rottweiler dongle is the way to go as it deletes the O2 sensor entirely. The bike's fuel injection still adapts to temperature and elevation as it has the baro sensor in the airbox. The narrow band O2 sensor isn't there for our benefit, it is there strictly for emissions regulations in the closed loop area.
The 690 platform, once set up, really is the 50/50 dual sport unicorn. It may not be the "best" but it is "good enough" wherever it goes, with a serious helping of power. The bike's versatile fun lively nature is why I love it so much.

I'm enjoying the additions your making as they are very much aligned with what i'm think for the bike once it arrives ( the style of heated grips, Cruise etc) .... except for the clutch...... IMO 😊. I looked at the Rekluse for the BMW but as my local (BM Motorcycles) said ... the old one lasted 100k so stick with the OEM. I realise there are other aspects to the Rekluse but maybe down the track.

Hey David, thanks for your note. On the Rekluse, just to clarify, the reason for this clutch has nothing to do with longevity, iti's what it gives you when climbing tricky terrain. You can just point the bike up steep hills in second gear and it is feathering the clutch for you beautifully as you motor up. No stalling... it's great. There are a couple of downsides to the Rekluse, but I love it for the tighter stuff.

I fitted the cruise control myself (I'm pretty basic with the tools, so if I can do it... anybody can). The unit works really well... just the same as my GS cruise control. With rade garage tank + luggage (coyote bag not the bathroom sink), I am chewing 7.5L/100km pretty consistently. Even off-highway, with mixed riding, its essentially 7.5L. I've come from a DRZ so don't think I'm riding it that hard (however the power def puts a grin on). I am chasing more range. Today I unplugged my fuel torque dongle. Ran it idle for 20 mins. Then rode it in the arvo on street for an hour. I prefer it now, it doesn't pull so hard straight from the bottom, the marginal extra low rev jerkyness I find minimal and, really that's why there is a clutch? I see nothing but rave reviews about this product so I must be in the wrong? @BoreasQ Před rokem +1

This thing is UNABLE to measure the "AFR" like Rex saying, because this controller sits inline with the O2 sensor. There is no such a kind of information there. It is very simple circuit: two wires go to the O2 sensor heater and two other ones provide the voltage from the sensor which level is changing depending on the amount of O2 in the exhaust gases. What this "magic" box does is intercepting and measuring the voltage from the O2 sensor then kicks in and corrects the voltage when it reaches certain threshold.
The original Closed loop AF ratio is 14.7:1 - which is very lean
The original Open loop AF ratio is 13.4:1
    The variation is 1.3
When this controller installed the values become as follows:
Closed loop AF ratio is 13.6:1 - it gets richer which adds stability and runs cooler
Open loop AF ratio is 13.4:1 - it stays same.
    The variation is 0.2
So this little box is a bit more intelligent thing than the resistor-based dumb dongles. It doesn't take to remove the O2 sensor, so your ECU and engine will work a bit healthier. ...Check ebay.

Yes, it hit my fuel consumption hard (about 30% reduction) so I have since pulled it out. But I think this big an impact is only on certain models, not all bikes.

      1) I can be more independent and say what I think
      2) If I like a product, I want to support the manufacturer and I'm happy for them to keep the margin.

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  Před rokem +1

Hey there, My long term assessment is that the dongle just doesn't run right for my bike MY21 701. It gives plenty of power, but it is running too rich. Lots of carbon build up in the exhaust pipe etc. Also the hit to fuel economy is pretty significant. I've found a guy who can dynotune the bike and knows how to access the ECU for a "proper tune". I'm going to do that in the next couple of weeks.

@@brentbat Hi Brent, I'm from Sydney and have just purchased a 22 Gas Gas es 700 euro 5 and can feel it is a little lean off the bottom. I'm looking to add a wings exhaust and Rade air box which will probably make it worse. I found a guy on Ebay who makes these dongles and there is a VB version for the euro 4 and a VC for the euro 5 models. He also sells a fuel controller so you can adjust the amount of fuel. You may want to get in contact with him first before spending the money on the tune.
      Here are his comments-
The Euro 5 ECU's are pretty good in the open loop, they run around 13.6:1 with the air box & VC controller, I do sell an adjustable fuel mod that can correct the open loop AFR but you hardly need to add much more fuel in the open loop to get it down to 13.2:1, most of the guys are just running the VC controller.
On the Euro 4 ECU you would need both mods.

@@brentbat Hi Brent, I have ordered one of these dongles through Kev and he has explained that it will use more fuel to bring the A/F ratio down to 13.2 in the closed loop between 0 - 40% throttle opening. He was saying that with the dongle I can expect between 2-5 km less per litre. Worse case is around 65km less per tank. Is this the sort of fuel economy that you were experiencing? I suspect, even if you go with a custom tune, your current fuel economy will drop anyway. Thank

One year on, I'd probably not recommend them. The extra fuel consumption was pretty significant. I've pulled mine out of the bike, and I'm probably going to send the ECU away to get flashed and properly set. I found the fuel dongle made the bike run too rich. It seems a bit model specific. Some people (and year models) swear by them, and others have the same problem I do (BIG hit on fuel economy and running rich).

Hey there. I have a 2021 Euro5 bike. The dongle worked fine on my bike (amazing power down low) except the fuel economy hit was too much (about 25%). I liaised with Rex and he said that this sounded way excessive. He discovered that they had changed something with the MY21 Euro 5 bike... and he has since modified his dongle specifically for this. Now I just got the new dongle but I haven't fitted it yet. I just got back from a 9 day solo ride in the Flinders Ranges and didn't want to fit the dongle just before I did this big adventure. However, I took very detailed measurements of my fuel economy on this trip, and when I get home I will be fitting the ned dongle on my bike and will monitor the impact on fuel economy closely.
