I am an Australian and I have never heard Star Spangled Banner sung like that. To be honest, I have never really paid much attention to the lyrics and so I checked them out and the history of the poem written by Francis Scott Keys. Stapleton took me to that moment when Keys watched the 25 hour bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British - desperately looking to see the flag by the light of busting rockets and bombs, seeing the flag waving as a sign of resistance, survival, freedom, bravery, victory. Stapleton told the story and captured the raw emotion of that moment. It was spectacular.

Too many haters in this comments section. This man isn’t giving a performance over Chris, he’s a music teacher/vocal coach breaking down the individual notes in the runs Chris is using to let us hear more clearly the individual notes he is hitting (and he is picking them out shockingly easily and hitting them quite well, imo). That’s what a vocal coach would do if you brought a performance to them and asked them to help you learn to sing it. If you want to just watch Chris singe the national anthem that video is on youtube with like 4.5 million views, it shouldn’t be difficult to find. And Chris isn’t “straining” to hit any of these notes. They are all welllllllll within his range, and he isn’t even belting much, he is keeping the performance respectfully subdued while adding distortion to some of the notes to add vocal color, which imparts feeling. That’s what makes a good singer.
