I am an Australian and I have never heard Star Spangled Banner sung like that. To be honest, I have never really paid much attention to the lyrics and so I checked them out and the history of the poem written by Francis Scott Keys. Stapleton took me to that moment when Keys watched the 25 hour bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British - desperately looking to see the flag by the light of busting rockets and bombs, seeing the flag waving as a sign of resistance, survival, freedom, bravery, victory. Stapleton told the story and captured the raw emotion of that moment. It was spectacular.

You know more than many Americans then. Love this. ❤ Various forms of warfare carried out by the French (New Orleans) and certainly the Spanish (cities named for forts against) once understood how vast the land was. England was not finished in tries as well.
See why so proud while understanding freedom must be protected always. Chris is my all time #1 singer and am NO country fan.

Chris is amazing... and hits the soul, but not only that... I think part of the reason everyone loves this rendition so much, is because our souls long to be hit like that.. bring back the soul to music, its been lost in too many of todays artists... there are a few that got it, few mainstreamers too... but so so rare... and thats a shame to lose.. the soul is the base of our culture.

@@TheSakebomb1 I like his version, but the star spangled banner is not a country blues song. It was written while a fort on the South Carolina coast was being bombarded by the British navy. Too many haters in this comments section. This man isn’t giving a performance over Chris, he’s a music teacher/vocal coach breaking down the individual notes in the runs Chris is using to let us hear more clearly the individual notes he is hitting (and he is picking them out shockingly easily and hitting them quite well, imo). That’s what a vocal coach would do if you brought a performance to them and asked them to help you learn to sing it. If you want to just watch Chris singe the national anthem that video is on youtube with like 4.5 million views, it shouldn’t be difficult to find.
And Chris isn’t “straining” to hit any of these notes. They are all welllllllll within his range, and he isn’t even belting much, he is keeping the performance respectfully subdued while adding distortion to some of the notes to add vocal color, which imparts feeling. That’s what makes a good singer.

Yes..slow version influenced by Marvin Gaye's original version which had deep and subtle nuances

This was the best ever, just topped Whitney's in my book.

Wow. Whitney will always be my number one. But her version pumped me up. But this easily is in my new second place. I do not know why it made me cry… but as a grown ass man of 43… I teared up hard. Just bein real.

Hey Iamrufusjohnson, I love your critique of Chris Stapletons rendition of the National Anthem. He is top three with Whitney and Marvin Gaye. Of course with Whitney at number 1.

Vocally Whitney’s was the best, but Chris’s version struck a chord within my soul that made me cry, “God Bless America” 🇺🇸

For Whitney it was very natural to hit those high notes. Beautiful of course. He was unique and country and blues. Petty close tie.

This mattered more because it's a white man with soul and it brought a great meaning to the song! He went ham! You did too my brother! He killed it, you brought it back to life!!
