I didn't need that much, so he offered to give me less cuttings plus the cherry shrimp for the $20. Two months later, I still have the cherry shrimp. I like and have both. Cherries are cute and small and it's really fun to be able to see the whole breeding process. Amanos can get quite large and are absolute machines with cleaning a tank. Because they're big, they're easy to see and observe. I can only put larger amanos with my betta since he likes to eat cherry shrimps. For a species only tank, cherries are the way to go. For a community tank, I prefer larger amanos since they can't get eaten by the most popular tropical fish.

I've had two ammonos in my tank for goodness knows how long. One finally passed on a few months ago, but the other one as been around...for around 4+ years...at least!! I've truly lost track of how long that guy has lived. I named him T1000 because of his color, and I think it's so apt, as he seems well nigh indestructible! I've heard that they can last a long time, as they are not inbred to death, but wow! I saw the even longer lived one feed upside down facing the surface of the water. So amazing. It blows my mind when I see that; it reminds me how differently gravity works underwater, especially with tiny critters like that! Cherries are pretty, but, like most shrimp, they tend not to last long. So many shrimp are hopelssly inbred, and so their genetics are garbage and they don't last long :(

My larger tanks have amano, my smaller tanks have cherry - I love both for different reasons. The amano shrimp are jerks tho & will swim off with an entire wafer nearly big as them meant for my goby's/corys. I've seen them actually wrestle the wafer away from my other critters & "attack" (hilarious to watch) in competition for food. Example: Curious (Gardneri) killifish checking out food that ended up at bottom of tank....amano jumps on his face, killifish swims off confused, amano snags the tasty tidbit. Nobody messes with my amanos lol! I've had to get creative making sure my bottom feeders get enough to eat. Also, if my hand is in the tank, I inevitably end up with 1 or 2 amano shrimp crawling on it & picking away. Those teeny-tiny pincers they use feel so funky on skin.

I know I’ve got 2 5 gallons right next to each other. The one that’s right by the window has 2 amanos, the glass isn’t clean but it’s clear and I can easily see them moving around. I actually think that tank has become self-sufficient because aside from adding water I don’t need to do anything with it aside from refilling it as water evaporates, the shrimp eat the algae, the algae eat the shrimp waste and photosynthesize. The one that’s farther from the window has no shrimp and grows great carpets of algae on the walls that I have to clean.
The only downside to amanos is I had a plant in my window aquarium to help eat the fish wastes and the shrimp completely devoured it.

Great video, thank you so much for that. I've had both types, but the cherry shrimp population died off at one point unfortunately.
Amanos can get really old, I still have one that I bought 8 years ago. The others I bought back then lived 3-6 years, this seems to be how long you can expect them to live on average.

@@queenmolmolly7962 I'm afraid I have no secrets to share. It was only one out of six that survived that long, so it is probably only one exceptionally long-lived individual. I kept it together with platyfish in a heavily planted, mostly unheated tank. Due to the very dense plants I don't see it every day, but today I spotted it so I can confirm it's still alive

i have a few (like 5 or 6)ghost shrimp in planted betta tank and they are doing well, so I thought oh I can probably put these in my mollies in a much larger tank and I found out the hard way of almost all but 2 of the ghost shrimp getting eaten by my mollies.

We can’t get Amano shrimps here in Australia but there is a native shrimp that seems to be similar the North Queensland algae shrimp or sometimes called the Darwin algae eating shrimp. Do you know how they compare to an Amano shrimp the looks are quite similar and they also need brackish/saltwater to reproduce.

I'm definitely going to be getting cherry shrimp for my tank, probably buying from my father-in-law because he breeds them. They will be paired with guppies as tank mates. I also want a separate tank for my ghost shrimp, Carl, and any potential mates we might get him.

I got a group of 4 cherry shrimp to take care of brown algae in my betta tank because the color looked great with my koi betta and plants. Of course the next day I could only find 3 and a betta with a full belly🙄🙄🙄 I think amano shrimp might work better due to size and semi translucence so wish me luck!

if you're an aqua scaper you'll be looking at amano, if you want some red colours and if you keep good water for breeding purposes and to make some money on the side then its neo reds. However, it;s not quite as simple breeding shrimp, you need good consistent water and a healthy environment. I've bred both neo and caradina and both need good consistent parameters. oh and volume and size of tank is very relevant.

Hi, I have a question. IÂŽm new in aquarium hobby and I would lke to add betta to my 20gallon aquarium. I was watching lot of videos about the tank mates and I have neon tetras kuhli loaches and I want to buy cherry shrimp. And than, I would like to buy betta. But my loaches are really active. Everyone on youtebe was saying that kuhli loaches are shy and stay hidden, but I have four kuhli and they are swimming all over the aquarium. So the question is: will that be a problem that they are that active? Thanks :) And also, if you don't think it's the best idea to have these fish together, I'd be happy to hear your opinions and advice. it's my first aquarium and I fell in love with kuhli loaches, cherry shrimps and bettas and I wanted to have them, hopefully it's ok
