    This CZcams channel is causing me to have the weirdest collection of plush cartoon characters. I should probably be concerned about leaving Itchy, Lotso, and Luci together in the same room.

    Great review, Jims, we've had a lot of the same feelings about this show.
    It looks like based on WGA website listings they've been quietly renewed for another 20 episodes, so I imagine they knew they didn't need to payoff everything quite yet. After digging more and more into the details they have laid out, I think I'm starting to see the way some of these mysteries are going to fit together, and I have a strong feeling that the show will be incredibly rewarding on rewatch after it's all said and done. I'm starting to get REALLY attached to the world.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  Před 3 lety +22

      Interesting about the quiet renewal! One of the things that frightened me about Part 3 was that I didn't know if it was ending in Part 4. Disenchantment has not been the most hyped show on Netflix or anything. So doing a relaxed Part 3 like this one seemed like they were setting themselves up to rush through Part 4.
      If they are really are going 60 episodes, this pacing makes a lot more sense.

      @@kayd9405 I watched season 2 while drunk so I barely remembered it. Consequently I started season 3 by beginning on the coffee shop episode in season 2. Which was great. I skipped most of the episodic water-treading but I got enough of the slice of life characterisation. And then it made their motivations much more obvious too. The secret society wants to install a monarch so they can sell their magic land to Steamland (presumably to get hollowed out for magic or something). Also in return they get to have a kinky theocracy. The magic comes from being the original home of the elves, and the Trøgs are related to the elves in some fashion (their symbol is on Leavo’s map).

    I feel like Luci breaking away a little from Bean and Elfo has improved their characters a bit from the prior seasons, where Luci was too much of a crutch for helping save the day when things went bad. I also really like Queen Oona's character development this season especially showing her reptile characteristics but King Derek reminds me of blue Ralph, which is not a good thing.

    I feel like Disenchantment is a game of patience, at this point. While it is certainly enjoyable, the messy storytelling makes it hard to root for anything- while watching, I had a constant feeling of "what's the point of getting invested, if they're probably not going to deliver?"
    While I do agree that some episodes were good (I'm especially in love with everything about Oona), I did feel that a lot of the character development was stated rather than shown. Lots of moments with characters going "hey, this is how I feel, and how my perspective's changed", which doesn't help with the engagement problems the show already struggles with.

    The more I think about it, the more I’m half expecting all the mysteries to all be tied together in their origins.
    Steamland’s advanced tech, the Seekers secrets, Maru’s connection to Hell, Damkmire’s dankness, Bentwond’s financial success, the connection between the Elves and Dreamland and the Trogtown, all of it tied King Agogg and the curse on the house of Grunkwitz.

    Right.... I adore this show for the most bizarre reason ever. Because I see it less as Matt Groening doing a Fantasy show and see it more like a Raymond Chandler detective story set in a Fantasy world. Cynical drug abuser who is two steps behind everyone, where everyone is out for themselves and the plot isn't really what Chandler focused on (probably due to him just combining short stories to turn it into a long mess of a book that makes VERY little sense, but the characters are so engaging we're along for the ride).
    I think of it also like most of the writing staff are short story writers (episodic tv history) and now they're trying something that has a genuine through line.... Lot of mistakes made, but they're getting it. Disenchantment has its flaws, but I think you're right in that it's all going to be down to how it ends. They've mentioned the ending has already been written since the start so... we'll see

    @JonathanRodd Před 3 lety +2

    I agree to a point. I also really really like the characters and world and hope that they stick the landing. What REALLY frustrated me about this season was the fact that there was no real landing at the end. It's making us wait for the next season before that landing. And there were so many mysteries and subplots that were left unresolved. Could they not have resolved at least some of them within this season so that there was at least some sense of completion? It feels like most of the narrative of this season won't have much value until next season, so until that happens you're just kinda left with this vague sense of dissatisfaction.

    The show is hit or miss when it comes to it's humor, but when it comes to world building and character I cannot agree with you more that it shines well in those places. My biggest criticism with this set of episodes is how the show seems to pile on a lot of mysteries and story elements, but offers little payoff, and I think that has been a problem since the beginning to be honest. While the payoff is often weak and it doesn't always answer everything when a new set of episodes ends I am still intrigued, and look forward to the next set of episodes. I loved what they did with Prince Derek and Oona during the first half of Season 2, and I cannot wait to see more of them, but I have very mixed thoughts on what they did with Zog. I think most of the secondary characters are getting more to do, but at the same time the vagueness of how much of a threat or non-threat these people can be to Bean is something that makes me uncertain of most of them. While I am rooting for this show to be another winner for Matt Groening, I really wish it would iron out some of it's flaws so we don't always have something to complain about each new set of episodes. Great reviews as always Jim.

Nothing in the show has time to breathe or develop but it doesn’t go anywhere either. The end of season 3 leaves everyone in the same place as season 2 - bean is in trouble, the king is indisposed and there’s a million plots. It’s like someone sprinting in place on a treadmill.

      @@lucalamanna-vg2bz I wouldn't compare it to Simpsons, it's too different. It feels like they're trying to be Futurama, but do Futurama with only the overarching plot relevant episodes, but what Futurama managed to do was to fluff out their characters WITH the filler episodes, by not filling them with too much stuff and letting a new aspect of a character come gradually. If it was pure episodic that would be fine, but from the start Disenchantment has always half assed serialization. That it has accepted it more openly in Season 3 is definitely an improvement (though I really wish it had come in season 2 and they hadn't resolved the season 1 cliff hanger so quickly). Netflix is a medium where you can rely on the audience having seen every episode after all, so there's no need to shy away from Serialization if that's what the show is calling for.

    This reminds me of the recent Amazing Spider-Man run by Nick Spencer. (SPOILERS FOR THE RUN! DON'T CLICK READ MORE!)
    The mysterious villain Kindred is Peter's best friend Harry Osborn. He's able to bring the dead back to the living. So naturally he brings back a multitude of Spider-Man's Rouges gallery that died off in previous stories.
    As of this comment, issue 57 is out and we don't know how or why harry became Kindred, but there's hints of connecting back to the infamous "One More Day" story. Still after 3 years, Nick Spencer's playing it close to the chest.
    Yet in the middle of this mystery we got character development from Norman Osborn, Mary Jane, Charlie Cooper, Boomerang, J Jonah Jameson, Sin-Eater, Aunt May, & many more of Spidey's Rouges gallery & supporting cast. I believe that's what Disenchantment is doing as well. Both are playing their mysteries close to the chest & are creating drama within the main cast of characters to overcome. Probably so when the mysteries get revealed, they're able to better process it.

    They turned the funniest character in the show into a HONKING PLOT DEVICE.... FOR THE WHOLE SEASON.... The writers keep adding sub-plot after sub-plot, with little to no payoff/catharsis, and the pacing is just TERRIBLE. Seriously, it took 10 episodes to see Zog dethroned and establish that Bean has vague magical powers that show up when convenient to the plot... THAT'S IT... Nothing else really happenned (with the exception of the shock kill-off attempt with Lucy.... Which shocked NOBODY, as important characters in this show can come back from the dead and escape hell easily....).

    god this show has always been pretty, but this season was BEAUTIFUL.
    the watercolor/ink look pairs sooo well with the groening style.
    like you said, it's interesting to be serialized, because that suggests a definite end point, a final season. in which case, i REALLY hope rhis doesn't get the famous netflix axe before they wrap it up.

    Not only the villains have not clear objectives (from what they let us know) but most characters are not consistent and that makes Decipher stuff harder. (I really like the show, it frustrates me)

      @MungkaeX Před 3 lety

      I’d argue the Netflix style season dumps are not doing the show any favors either.
      From a Social Media Hype perspective you have those who watch it the day it comes out, but they don’t want to say too much as to not spoil it, then everyone else comes along in bits and pieces here and there, and are each at such different points in the series it can be difficult to properly discuss with others.
      My best recommendation would be to multitask while half watching the earlier episodes, and when you start stopping to rewind twice or more an episode it’s time to start watching with more focus. That way you can get a feel for the character dynamics and care a bit more for the cast rather than just jump to season 2 or 3 and not be invested at all in the character building that previously took place.
      It’s a slow burn.

    It's such a charming, well-done semi-comedy, semi-drama show. I really don't know how people can expect it to be far better than it is. Maybe they can improve some things, but it is still a consistently entertaining and engaging show.

    I am enjoying Disenchantment, it's one of those real slow burn style shows where appreciation comes over time rather than immediately in the first episode. I just hope that it doesn't linger longer than it needs to be. Two more seasons and I'd say it would be in a good position to call it a day, assuming they plan ahead to wrap things up storyline wise.

    Are we ever going to find out who shit Elfo with that arrow way back in part 1? Luci's line delivery of "who did that?" Was really intense, Luci had been cruel to Elfo bur you could tell that he really cared for him as a friend. Oh n part 3 here, they make a reference to that line delivery in a episode but I can't recall which one. My best guess right now is that Odvall was one the to order Elfo's death but we don't know who actually fired the arrow.

    Season 3 is an improvement as you said and I enjoyed it more than the first two. Elfo isn't insufferable in this season and lucy is still one of the funniest characters in the show. However, I have the same problems with too much world building up to something grand and having very little payoff overall.

    I will give it this: this season was better than the previous two seasons on the basis that it finally knows what it wants to be in terms of actually being a serialised series rather than the first two or three episodes is the overarching plot, then okay, time to ignore that and just be episodic. Until the last two episodes come where suddenly an overarching story is back and I would have forgotten there was one if I hadn't noticed the pattern by then. This season certainly doesn't have that issue as pretty much each episodes organically follows the other.
    But It is certainly taking baby steps to find its footing in ways because while this season certainly works a lot better within the serialised, but as a piece of genre fiction it is still kind of at odds with itself. It is basically a fantasy comedy series, but it works a lot better as a fantasy series than it does work as a comedy. The thing that continues to draw me about this series is the world-building and even the character development because it is certainly sticks out as its own fantasy world that isn't too derivative of anything by Tolkien or even "Game of Thrones" despite clearly having some influence on them (even if it is no where near as subversive as it thinks it is), but it truly feels like a fantasy world with its own identity to which you can at least it is not others you have seen before. But the comedy is still very hit and miss for me.
    But apart of me feels like Groening and crew are both similar and different situation to that of "Father Ted" and "IT Crowd" creator Graham Linehan. Both are guys who I think their success in comedy has kind of gotten to their head to a certain degree to which they believe they can do no wrong. While Linehan is a guy who I think works better without restraints as shown once you compare his Channel 4 stuff that people actually like to his BBC stuff to which even people here in the UK are unaware of. While Groening and crew are guys who are better when they have limitations as Netflix allows they to write episodes that are not 22 minutes long, some of the jokes in "Disenchantment" really drag their feet through the mud or the set up being way too telegraphed to which the punchline at times becomes way too predictable or even make the comedy sin of over-explaining the joke in ways even the Comedy Central era of "Futurama" or even zombie "Simpsons" never do.

    I feel like they could've done with resolving some plotlines before adding more, or weaving some of them in a little sooner. I'm still very unclear on what this curse is supposed to be and why it's so bad, and I'm starting to get a little frustrated at Dagmar being involved so little in events when she's built up to be such a big deal. I feel like the series really could've done with a few more episodes per season to give the plot room to breathe and develop more naturally.
    (spoilers)
    Plus I think that Luci really should've had a bit more development and focus if they were going to do something dramatic like send him to Heaven. It didn't feel like it was quite the right time for it imo, and I was disappointed Luci didn't get more to do this season.
    Also I kinda really dislike the Merkimer episode because it furthers almost nothing and Merkimer could've easily just become a human and then gone to save them anyway.
    All that being said, I still enjoyed it and I'll probably keep watching anyway.

    Honestly though if they don't pay something off in the next Season I think most will lose interest, that is if they haven't already - it's a perfectly fine show as is but people expect more from such legendary creators and while I'm happy to catch up with it whenever they release a new Season the whole mystery aspect being played as a large part of the story but never going anywhere is really starting to be annoying and the cliff-hanger endings are basically a meme at this point, they'd be fine if we had any sort of answers to anything and if we didn't already know they'll be zero pay-off to that cliff-hanger in the next Season... assuming they follow suite anyway.
