Fun fact:
This theme played when you first meet the emperor in his true form.
Everytime this song plays, I get a sense of dread and sadness that I'll finish this game and unable to experience like the first time again. Truly masterpiece. Well done 👍
You can experience a fresh start if you try the Dark Urge run, it adds multiple new layers to the game, felt like a new game again on my 2nd playthrough!
that's the plan! I'm still torn between fighting the urge or let it consumes them. Hmmm@@progressionupdates9234
The game can be enjoyed a second time as if it’s the first time, there’s so many different choices and outcomes that if you started over you could pick completely different choices and have a completely different experience
@@Pokefan000000 Enjoyed yes, experienced like the first time no
@@Pokefan000000You can never experience the feeling of not knowing what the tadpoles are, what purpose they serve etc
The reveal about Balduran and Ansur was when the game really clicked for me in terms of story. Never meet your heroes.
If there's one thing the game clearly rings true is that being morally good is almost impossible, just like it is in the real world. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
@@ArnoldWind Depending on how you treat the Emperor, you get a very different view of him. In my current playthrough i called him a freak during the scene where he tries to romance you, and he responded by showing a cutscene where he enthralled Duke Stelmane and puppeted her, showing the truth of his organization the Knights of the Shield. He threatens you saying that you are his thrall to be puppeted just like she was, and that youre nothing without him, the every calling sign of a manipulator and abuser. Not only that, piecing together other dialog from Wyll about Stelmane, its clear that the Emperor was either the cause of Stelmanes stroke, or the enthrallment resembled a stroke to outsiders. Wyll says that the first time he met Stelmane she was active and joyful, but the second time he met her, she was unable to walk without a cane and had trouble speaking "A stroke victim?" he asked his father, "No. A stroke survivor." his father responded. I thought that moment was beautiful between Wyll and his father, another show of strength and wisdom for them. But goddamn did the Emperor taint that.
In conclusion, the Emperor is straight up evil, not even a doubt about it.
@@TabbyVee The Emperor isn't evil, he lacks a soul and therefore any morality. He is reason incarnate, he does what is best for himself at any given momment. Several books on Mind Flayers say this, an Illithid is only an ally for as long as goal align. Even if you work with them for decades, no friendship will form, they will drop you the momment it becomes inconvinient. That said they seek no revenge or retaliation brought upon by emotion. Beings of pure reason they will hold no grudge and will only retaliate if you prove a threat still. In fact if you turn on him he has no problem calling upon former "foes" for assistance holding no resentment.
@@snakept69Omeluum is a bro tho
Balduran and Ansur were definitely fuckin
Knowing who Balduran is and who he became as really makes this song cut deep
I was so shocked at that reveal
@@RuptimusPrime I had to take a break from the game the rest of the day after that reveal. As soon as the Emperor was like, "Ah, there's nothing here, don't go down there!" I was like, wtf are you hiding NOW -.-
Very much so. After that bombshell I had to take a break from my main playthrough and started a separate playthrough.
You guys liked that? I think it's the single most moronic and unnecessarily forced narrative decision ever made.

O, sing a song of Balduran
Who founded Baldur's Gate
Empire golden built on trade
Could not avert his fate
When three, though dead, assailed his port
Transformed, he fell their thrall
Succumbed as threat from nether years
Arose to conquer all
Now hope is gone, or so it seems
But game's not over yet
New cards are drawn, new hands are played
Newcomers place a bet
A knave, a wizard, devil, gith
The odds are cast anew
And Baldur's fate now turns upon
The whims of fortune's few
no way balduran founded baldurs gate, thats crazy
Thank you!

They were gay and idc what anyone says.
@@backpack_hermit25 Yes and? Like it matters. Male or female, if you get to get with a dragon, that's an accomplishment.

"Drawn by a haunting voice, you arrive at the Elfsong Tavern. It is a small place, filled with motley assortment of patrons...and grisly trophies. There, the voice is all around you, and the patrons have grown silent as the song washes over them. One by one, they all seemed lost in it's call."
in our avernus game our cleric Dispel evil and good'd the ghost to put it to rest and had to flee the tavern. Bard came in clutch by installing a programmed illusion (or rather a series of them, so the owner of the tavern owner could do the correct command phrase to get the ghost song he wanted) over the next week
Thats really cool, I think things like that inspire good roleplay more than anything else.
If you know you know.
Nice callback I *loved* dark alliance as a kid ^^
Heh, the Elfsong as a building has really changed over the centuries. But its essence will always be there.
Knowing Balduran's fate makes this song feel like a meta commentary on the game itself. I love it.
he was a coward and traitor who killed his closest friend and doomed countless souls to be mindflayers.

A metallic dragon is essentially on par with an angel when it comes to powerful good guys in DnD. I turned on the emperor from the moment on.

Yes same! I even wanted to cry when I first heard it in elfsong tavern
But game's not over yet! meanwhile im far in act 3 knowing the end is near lol
It really fits the more dramatic events and conversations when you camp there.
Act 3 is longer than act 2 and 1 combined brahs. You hear this song in the inn which is basically at the start of act 3 😅
@@claudekim7876Yeah I'm hours into act 3 and it seems like I haven't even done half of what I can do, yet people are saying act 3 ended too quickly??

When you spend hours to respec all your companion in your tavern camp
got that lvl 12 now we must minmax to face the final parts of the game
By far my fav song in the game. When you get to this point on your first playthrough, it really really hits hard, because you get the overwhelming sense, that the game is drawing to a close and when playing for the first time, there’s nothing I wanted to happen less, I couldn’t get enough, so the overwhelming joy I felt, hearing the words “BUT GAMES NOT OVER YET” was a really really nice touch. I have wondered if that is just a nuance I am feeling or if that is what the devs intended, but this song really does feel like the penultimate song for Baldurs Gate, a culmination of all our adventures, with the battle with the nether brain ever looming on the horizon, but not to fret, because many adventures still await before then, so explore, have fun, and never lose hope!
Everytime I go for a rest at the inn I feel like crying to this song, it's so beautiful, and fits so well the darker tone that Act 2 and 3 has. And like some people have said, it gives you this strange feeling that your journey is near its end (regardless of which part you are in Act 3, it technically is the end), and you can't avoid the bittersweetness of not wanting it to end/to continue adventuring alongside the characters I've grown attached to.
But at the same time the best part of any story is the end.
@@BIGESTblade It depends on the story, but generally yes haha.
When the true nature of a certain someone is revealed to you, the motif of this song plays in the background.
Took me a couple playthroughs to actually notice, but let me tell you I was SHOOK
Well this melody plays in the background all the time, like at camp, etc.

@@mithcoriel3656Not piano, it's flute
From the Wiki and 1994 Volo's Guide
"The name derived from an unusual haunting: a ghostly female elven voice heard periodically throughout the establishment. The singing was quiet, but could be heard quite clearly. It was most often described as both beautiful and mournful. The identity of the singer was unknown, but it was clear that her song was a lament for a lover lost at sea. No other music was permitted inside the Elfsong."
My bard did not obey that last part
Reporter: - How many awards will Borislav Slavov win this year for BG3's score?
Everyone: - Yes.
Just got to the Elfsong Tavern in BG3 and this brought tears to my eyes! Not the same melody we could hear in dark alliance of course, but definitely as haunting and appropriate for such an iconic place in D&D lore and, on a more personal note, in my own childhood memories. Thank you Bobby, thank you Larian! ♡
Edit: the FORESHADOWING is strong in this one! Well done ;)
This is the best song of the game, hands down.
Raphael's final act tho
@@sayak9693entire score is absolutely fantastic, these 2 are my favourite tracks too tho
Funny, I absolutly hate this song to the point of having to turn down the volume to 0, and this is coming from someone that loves pretty much every other song in the game. The lyrics are too much on the nose.
@@TheElefanteBranco Funny choice of words: "Absolutely".
Yeah, this or Raphael’s boss theme.
This, down by the river and Raphaels boss theme are on another level. Top notch work from Larian 👌
What an amazing song.
Elfsong Tavern still there. Game's not over yet!
You know what I love about this? That the instrumentation not only hints at what happened to Balduran in this song, but that a haunted/distorted instrumental version kicks in at a very specific point in the game, that I only realised on my second playthrough. Such an amazing touch!
The spirit of the Elfsong Tavern has only been known to change her tune once before - shortly after Elturel began its descent into Avernus.
Having her change her tune once more, for the situation the newcomers face is remarkably fitting.
...And makes me wonder how a Larian-developed "Descent Into Avernus" expansion would be.
As a DM who played through my first ever campaign (descent into avernus) as a player recently... God, I'd kill for that.
@@codex_jinora Oh... I am so jealous. I've recently lost my group and Descent Into Avernus was something that I wanted to either play or DM for years but the correct group mentality never came. Boy, I cried from just reading it.
I hope they make it, I need to go kick Zariel's ass personally until she fixes Karlach
@@EmissaryofWind Zariel would probably prefer Karlach this way.
@@BIGESTblade She's gonna prefer whatever she can do to make me stop kicking her ass
This soundtrack just keeps surprising me. The main theme, Down by the River, that Siren's Song that hypnotizes me just as much as it does the characters in the game, the song Alfira's working on in the druid camp when you first meet her, I'd thought I'd heard all the great songs early, and then I rented a room in Baldur's Gate to use as my base camp in the city and this song plays. It's probably my favorite one yet.
I'm in the middle of the quest to recruit Minsc, and still have a lot to do in Act 3. If there's more to this soundtrack that is at this level... I don't know what I'll do.
This game is a masterpiece. After the decline of BioWare I had lost hope of ever seeing a game as good as the Mass Effect Trilogy or Dragon Age: Origins, or the first 2 Baldur's Gate games. The BioWare I knew and loved was gone, and with it all its games would be just a shadow of what they once were, yet here we are. Larian resurrected BioWare's first masterpiece and brought it back better than ever. I'm still not sure I like it more than the Mass Effect trilogy, but I'm still not done yet, and even if it I don't, it's close enough that I don't care. This is the best game I've played in 10 years, and the best I've played since completing the Mass Effect trilogy.
find a way into the house of hope is all I am saying.
@@joescorner4353 yeah i was very excited as well. I felt goosebumps while listening to that song haha
I just wanna hear whatever song Art sings in act 2.
I would like to know your thoughts after knowing the story of Balduran now (I suppose)
One of my favourite songs from the soundtrack! Poor Balduran... I heard it for the first time when I entered the rented room in Elfsong Tavern and just stood there and listened..
Indeed. If you side against him, his death would be ignoble. And even if you did side with him, he would still have to retreat into darkness, never to be recognized for his role in defeating the Absolute. I always found it a difficult choice - even if Orpheus is the saviour of the githyanki people, does the memory of Balduran not deserve one more blaze of glory?
@@timetochronicle Play the various dialogues with him a few more times with different options, and the choice won't be so difficult anymore.
i like when you 1st meet the emperor this plays softly in the background 😪
First time hearing this i just casually walked around the room i rented (well, for free) in elfsong tavern and just immersed myself in this world. Absolutely masterful work by incredibly talented and masterful composer
Thetavern keeper being worried that he won't have any clients was tragic. I would've payed any money he asked just to make sure the place didn't close. Baldur's Gate would lose too much without Elfsong tavern.
Encountering this song was the first time in my gaming history when I just sat there mesmerized in the song so much I couldn't move on.
My favorite camp setting in the entire game, with the best theme of all of them. So sentimental, melancholy, bittersweet to hear it towards the end of your journey with such amazing characters. I'd sing along to it while organizing all the crap in my inventory LOL
Whenever I hear this song I feel strangely calm....for the longest time me and my party were on the road....out in the wilderness with only a campfire to keep us warm.
It feels like we finally made it, we are in a civilized area and it brings comfort yet also reminds us that the work isnt done yet, this is merely our reward for making it this far.
listening to this when one of my companions is having a mental breakdown no longer knowing what lies ahead, tore me down more than i thought i would.
I cried when Balduran said ''As long as I breathe, thou shall never breach my Gate!'' Such a powerful scene!

This song give me chills. Especially when you give stones to the Emperor in the end and do a good ending, it's so poetic when he comes in, gives inspiring speach, and saves his city
"Balduran's grace be with us"

Oh man, just discovered this song in-game, now I am at the Elfsong Tavern. So gorgeous.
"A knave, a wizard, devil, gith" - so that's the canonic hero group?
More like Bhaal, Mystra, Raphael and Vlaakith, they are the champions of the game who wish to control the power of Netheril Empire, while Tav's group is mere pawns, or the "cards" being drawn.
@@svyalinirnhut890 I like your interpretation, but I really think that it could be both at the same time now, especially considering the card analogy, underlining how nothing really changes and names are just like the wind, all are part of the same deck, etc, etc.

It was the second time along with the Raphael’s theme when I stopped playing and just sat there listening to the music.
This is one of those moments when I just completely stopped whatever I was doing just to listen when the song first came up. Was not expecting that at all. Reminds me the first time I entered a tavern in DAI and when Eurydice in Hades sang.

@@A_Bearded_YetiNot only this, is about the emperor throwing away all he accomplished to gain more power, he discarted even his best friend Ansur

This song really works for act 3.
Unlike act 1 and 2, the stakes are higher now. It’s not just our little group that runs the risk of turning into mindflayers, now we’ve got to worry about a monstrous cult taken over the realms. The odds are stacked against us, but the story isn’t over just yet. We still have time to do the impossible and secure our victory, so that we may claim tomorrow as our own

Upon playing through the game a second time, this music plays when you meet the dream visitor in the flesh inside a certain astral location. It plays as they introduce themselves and it hits very different, knowing who they are and all.
Ooh, really? It only plays with lyrics on the second playthrough?
Love this one absolute banger even better in terms of story
All the music is great, but this track is my favorite! Your music has a special place in my life!
He is a rather cool guy. The romance scene was a bit cursed but still... cool dude Mr. Balduran.
He really deserved better. I couldn't betray Lae'zel like that..
Well at least you can make him change. I really like him and definitely gonna romance him on my next playthrough. I hope for dlc from Larian or at least maybe some mods to change his appearance. Liked the previous voice for our ''dream lover'' but got used to the new one for our Guardian. Shame that when he tells you who he truly is you can no longer hear that voice actor.
I was genuinely surprised that if you choose to romance the emperor you can't ask if they can take the previous form, which would be well within the powers of an illithid in the astral plane (like, not just a disguise, they would BE that person)@@wiktoriajedrzejewska7287
