Freehand on miniatures and Warhammer can seem so daunting. Together with Sebastian aka Nero Miniatures we got a video to inspire you to try out free hand textures and art on your miniatures. Painting a skull on a Space Marine Terminator and textures on Morathi from Age of Sigmar hopefully giving you some new inspiration to be brave in your painting. I'm pretty sure there's something in there for warhammer beginner painters as the more seasoned vets.
Important note, this video was recorded before the spread of virus in Sweden. At the moment we're practicing painting on separate locations. :)

"In the first step you can see Sebastian is making the basic shape os the skull"
My man, that first step was already good enough for a final step hahahaha
Nero: *does amazing paintjob*
Also Nero: *uses more than half bottle of green*
How hard do you squeeze?
*Splort*
Not that hard
Legend says that his blood is made of paint.
This CZcams channel really has helped me become a better painter. I wish nothing but the best for you
Sebastian be like: let me tattoo realistic stuff on this armour
Me be like: yes my blue looks blue
I'm lucky if I have the right layer paint and enough imagination to brighten up the edges of a thing.
As a tattoo artist, itâs bizarre how much I reference my original drawing and my color study during a tattoo. I know I drew it, colored it, and having a stencil, etc. but I look at reference CONSTANTLY! great tutorial!
Itâs good to see the process of building up layers. I have been drawing for over fifteen years, and I will say the hardest part of drawing is knowing what you see opposed to what you think you see.
Did I hear someone say that Sebastian needed to create a CZcams channel XD
Yes!
@@heryanwart2921 Damn! that's awesome đ
I agree!
Yup
Great video, thanks for sharing. 1:34 Kaha is a great painter, I love her unique style. I joined her workshop and spent great time. Not easy to get these color transitions, patterns and so on, but it was a great experience.
I don't usually respond to tutorials but when I do, I like to pay a shit ton respect to the artist.
Seriously. This. Is. Godlike.
You can totally tell he's a tattoo artist just by the way he lays out his paints. Great work!
Also... his tattoos....
@@elmirBDS ... So all people who have alot of tattoos are tattoo artist? I should inform my friends of their new careers.
@@minehermit No, but I've yet to see a tattoo artist who isn't himself covered in them though... :)
The start of all these miniature painting vids always have me saying âthere is no way itâs gonna end up looking like the end product!â And bam! It does.
Itâs like those art tutorials where the horse is nothing but a rectangle and a few circles and then it says some final details and bam it is a fully shaded realistic horse with a gorgeous background and everything
Nobody could be more qualified to freehand than a high-level painter thats also a tattoo artist.
Oh wow that wing is PERFECT for my Night Lords. Beautiful work guys!
Amazing freehand and all, but i can't get over how amazing that green dreadnought looks!
Loving the video! Can't agree enough with some of the comments: The videos really helps showcase the techniques and break them down in easier chunks. Thanks for all the amazing content! Looking forward to all that is to come! :D

thanks for taking time and showing us some great techniques, you guys make it easy to understand and pick up! thanks sebastian and squidmar!
Sebastian is a genius! Thanks again for a great video. Been watching all the videos and will be painting my first mini very soon :)
Those wings are unreal.
Fantastic.
Those wings look sweet! very cool technique
Cheers Squiddy and Sebastian!
Stunning! That are really impressive skills! But also a perfect guide to try it!!! Thank You guys
Sebastian did already paintbrush the wing.
Me: holy shit, that's done!
Awesome work guys!
I love your stuff Squidmar but I have to say this collab video with Sebastian is hands down my favourite video you've done. Amazing
Everytyme someone starts "i love your stuff but i have to say" i brace myself for some troll comment haha! Thx for being kind man!
@@SquidmarMiniatures I think what took it to the next level was finding all of his tattoo work on Insta. Great portfolio of work between the tattoo work and minis. Also I think your skill of voicing over made his artwork shine even more here, its a dangerous team with you two together.
The secret to freehand is that you have to wear a sweet cheetah print shirt like Squiddy.
That Wraith head is awesome!
This... is... simply... art. Top Notch. Love it.
Truly the boldest shirt by Emil today
I'm not into Warhammer or big Armies & speed painting. I DIDN'T expect to get SO MUCH from Squidmar videos, lol. But I find myself sharing many of them, and coming back to several of them again & again!! I've shared on Vince Venturella's PMP Facebook page, and directly with other painters. THIS is the BEST video on Dragon Wings EVER!!! Thank you SO MUCH! I've learned a lot & improved my painting with Squidmar's help quite a bitđâ€ïžđđ
most likely one of your best videos so far, Keep up the good work and keep Sebastien!!!!!
Nutz. You guys are sure spending a lot of time on your craft.
Amazing. I'm painting a chaos army and been surfing around for ideas for the wings for Archaon and the dragons - this is a great idea! My army is featuring dark red capes and blue shields so it's perfect! I feel ready! Thanks for a awesome channel - so much inspiration.
Super cool to see this art being created. Keep up the good work Sebastian and Emil!
Kaha is the most talented painter ive seen
Ha, so true! this the next level of stealing! You spend 10$ for one month patronie for Kaha and you do a video out of it. You earn lots of $$$
One thing I love with these layered Dragon Wings: You could do just 2-3 layers to get a beautiful Dragon on the table, but you can always come back and do more layers for more depth later as time permits!đđ€©đđ
Sebastian has incredible talent. Great to see him on your channel
Astonishing work; and soooo METAL!!!
Iâve been planning on doing free handing on my Imperial Knight so this is actually useful for me
wow, they both look so good, and no not all can do this, but we can watch you do this and be amazed :)
This video is amazing. The skull is the best I have ever seen and I agree with all the suggestions that Sebastian needs his own channel. It would be amazing you guys going head to head.
I don't paint that many fantasy miniatures like you but I paint historical figures mostly from WW2 but so many of your techniques helps me with refining my skills of what little I have. Blending with acrylics is still a struggle so I am always watching to see more techniques. Thanks for the videos!
After edge highlighting, this another level , brush control and spacing freehand. Too many minis for spending this amount of time. Love it 8)
Wow, very impressive! Cool to see you two work together. Snyggt jobbat!
Awesome. Never seen anything like this. It's like learning back magic or something. Gotta try me some of this on my mythic battles manticore wings. Really good. Appreciated.
My God that's insane painting.
Great videos guys! The wing looks insane! Thanks for inspiration!
One of the most important things artists do when we have reference....we look at it. A lot. We analyze and stare and draw while weâre looking at the reference. A solid 70-90% of the process is observing the object...at least if youâre serious about drawing the object. Drawing from life is the best way. Set up a prop and a light and some cloth to create some contrast and ground, and draw/paint what you see. Practice. Do multiple angles. Draw big, draw weird, draw in one line, draw in thousands of line. Build up gestalt, and THEN do your final pass. THAT is how you get a good drawing from reference.

The most recent interesting. Look forward to each video every week. Keep up the good work..
The technic used on the wing is the same thing that you can use with your airbrush to create true fire. Nicely done. Like the skull a lot.
Woa, nice work on painting, and nice work on this video, it's very inspiring
Ya,so another cool tutorial really enjoyed that one. & it just goes to show ya no matter how good you become it pays to constantly study your example as your working on your piece. Itâs to easy to forget something along the way. Reminds me of a world class tattooist that did a tattoo of map of Canada but the west coast was on the east side and east on west.... on a customers arm. Funny thing is it took the guy a few days to realize it was wrong. Iâll bet someone pointed it out to him. Great one though really enjoy your stuff. Thanks so much for all the time, energy & effort you put into your tutorials.
Wow, those are works of art đ
That's friggin sick
Fantastic! Great inspiration. Tack!
Love the idea behind the wing, I'd never thought to take it that far :)
squid that wing is so sick. im in the middle of painting up a mid 90s big metal dark elf black dragon with huge wings... in totally stealing this idea, theres no way i cant use this on the model now. so good, u guys are the best, much love.
Sebastian is a beast !
Love your videos Emil they are so educational
Those wings are awesome
Amazing work, Thanks so much for this!
Thanks for the tips! Can't wait to try them myself!
Have fun!
Awesome. Great inspiration. Gives me more confidence to try things out.
You can do it!
I haven't painted leathery wings yet, but now I feel totally inspired and not afraid to try a dragon!!! Wonderful video!!â€đČâ€
man, that is freaking amazing gg on the skills
I visit my friends in Ărebro often. I must look into visiting UmeĂ„ when I next travel.
loved it! amazing
Great video. Thanks Nero
Another brilliant vid dude.
That man is talented!
This is so awesome. Love your content dude!
Followed Sebastien immediately đ
I don't think anyone paints as bravely as a tattoo artist.
Dude, for reals, 2:46 had me like D= He
just dove in with that white with no hesitation.
XD tattoing help alot understanding light and having stability/confidance alot ! you should try !! if a tattoo artist can paint, a painter can also tattoo !! ;)
@@brandonhedges719 theres 3 other wings already painted... wonder who did that... most artist will run out paper or storage space and go paint their skin or walls. XD
Fantastic tutorials. Thanks!
Bruuuutal!!! đ€đ€đ€đ€
Sick work!
Wowww
Got a big dragon mini from the store today. Perfect add for inspiration! Amazing work
I find it funny that you said big dragon mini.
Wow! Impressive painting skills
Thank you.Perfect.đđđ
I use a similar technique for free hand spiderweb. Cool to see it applied in a different way. Painting texture i feel is actually easier than layering on a model that has those skin ridges
Wow you guys are amazing
Awesome! đ
I'm stoked if I can just get a fairly straight line when I do pack markings on shoulder pads.
Great Artist, great video!!!!!!!!!
Can't wait to see you try this, please share it
Looking at references I see. Ethan Becker would be proud.
Love the channel, love the work, love the leopard print shirt
IncreĂble, muy muy guapo.
Que envidia, me encantarĂa saber pintar asĂ.
Lo mejor que he visto y yo creyendo que pintaba bien
More Sebastian, please!
His tattoos are lovely.
Holy fuk, tattooing minatures, it is totaly different level of craft, im amazed
That miniature face took my breath away. I need to be that good.
KAHA is so ridiculously good... Now I can have KAHA at home.
That first pattern is so cool, definitely gonna try something similar. Maybe something with spider webs...
me: I know this is something I'm not able to do
also me: I'll watch and like because I like your channel
Maybe you could :)
@@SquidmarMiniatures I don't have the patience for it, I'd rather make a decal. I also really, really, really do not have the artistic ability to draw or paint (in the traditional sense)
@@hansyolo8277 It just takes practice. Sebastian definitely got his free hand control from his history in tattoos. No artist starts off as a master.
*"Inspired by the Corona Virus"*
Head scratching choice of inspiration but I think their faces at 9:28 say it all
it looks amazing
Amazing work! He paints like a tattoo artist, for sure.
Inspiringâ„ïž
amazing!
i like how he stippled the patterns on, likely in reference to his tattoo background
On the topic of reference - Yes, yes, yes! All artists through history painted and sculpted using a refference. Sometimes their own studies, mostly real life references though. And they spent >more< time looking at references than actually painting or sculpting. But clinging on photos as references is a dangerous path. Learning to paint from photos will make you a decent photocopier, not a good painter. IÂŽd say the best way to lose fear of freehand painting is getting a stash of regular A4ÂŽs and the cheapest watercolors and painting random stuff at home, in nature, in the street and anywhere. You learn the most by trying to capture stuff that "fades" - things you canÂŽt pause to linger on meaningless details and truly capture the essence. Like a pidgeon that landed on your window. Might be a good trait to learn for both speedpainting and more artistic kind on miniature painting.
