Hot tip! When masking, spray a varnish coat over the mask before painting. The varnish will help seal the mask to the surface and reduce paint bleed.

@@atticusgaming96 size 1 has enough body to cover panels, and the tip is fine enough to get 99% of the details you're looking to hit. I like tiny brushes a lot, so i also have a size 0 on hand... but i still gravitate to the size 1 for most of the brush painting i do despite thinking i prefer the smaller brush. I also have a size 2... but that thing is too much of a chonker for me and is probably better suited for the work i start using an airbrush for.

    * Banner Cheat: Draw the image in an image editor (Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator works great), print the image, then use that as an underpainting (painting over the printed banner so that it doesn't look like it was printed). This also works for decals, which will always look like decals unless they're overpainted.
    * For organic shapes, Silly Putty works great as a mask.
    * For most freehand, a very dark underpainting works well for separating the device from the ground. (Paint in the dark color first, then leave just the edge of that as a darkline around the piece.
    * If you're doing a pattern (knotwork border, for instance), practice it on paper first so that you know how it works and so that you can center it where you want it easier.
    Really nice mudfish, btw.

After you applied them you can heat them carefully with an hairdryer, so the color cannot run underneath. Works like a charm. I also use vinyl masking tapes from 3M for masking non-flat surfaces and curves, same procedure here.

One trick I use, mostly when I have several minis like a game unit, rather than a display piece, is to look through my stash of dollar-store confetti or similar.
The bits are usually thick paper or sometimes thin metal and come in a variety of shapes - stars, moons, circles, hearts diamond etc - and stick these onto shields or breastplates or flags to paint over. I guess this is a way of avoiding freehand but it can help to get the job done.

You can improve your freehanding, or painting as we call it, by doodling & drawing as much as possible. Get a sketch book & start as simple as possible, i.e. the 3 basic shapes (circle, triangle & square, no rulers allowed, no corrections allowed). If you're good at that, start doing the 3D version (spheres, cones & cubes). With those 3 you can draw / freehand everything. Watch professional artists always start with the basic shapes - there's a reason for that.

a tip learned from striping the lines on the backs of dump trucks:
when the stripe runs non-perpendicular and goes under material at a 90 degree angle, do not continue the angle -go straight away from the view/go straight back.

As a beginner, I found the micron 00 pen approach to be nice for lettering and strong outlines, but I think building out from basic shapes is overall better.

Definitely going to have to watch this video and several other videos to learn how to freehand because the Guardians of the Covenant I want to paint have illuminated high gothic scripts all over their banners, armor, flanks of their vehicles.

    Ah yes. Free handing.
You made me nostalgic of my first free handing attempt with 1:72 soviet marines.
Than when I started to paint models, and minies I just had to feel proud of pulling off continuous tini stripes.
Even if it wasn’t all that impressive.

As a Christmas gift, I’m painting my best friend’s OC, who is a white tigress. Stripes are already making me tremble with fear.

Better idea! Take the image you want. Print it on paper to check your size comparison. Then print it on transfer paper. Seal the transfer. Apply the transfer.
    Done.

Fine art painter/illustrator here, and Miniac videos are better than 99% of all fine art painter/illustrator videos. I've come back to painting minis! That said, I didn't realize yall were hiding such good acrylic mediums in tiny pots -- crackle paste, weathering stuff, etc. At the Good Art Store, we have 4-8-16oz bottles of the same stuff... and transparent gesso too.

So I destroyed the decals for my space marines, and tried to freehand their symbols.
Long story shot I just added silver to look like battle damage, freehanding is hard

Knowing tricks like mixing white ink to go over a dark red color without bleeding through differentiates PRO painters from basic noobs. I learned something today.

use frog tape or similar and pre-wet the masking tape on textures to seal better. just use a damp sponge over the tape and the adhesive swells to fill gaps.

well for the best results i go the technique the old masters used. A single pig hair, i tend to glue them to a wood skewer. This makes eyes and other details way easier than a, even fine, multihaired brush. And i learned to make them during developmental biology, we use this to 'fish' nematodes from the agar plates.
