My appreciation of bonsai transitioned from being at a distance as an observer to an active participant due largely to your first book. If it makes any difference, I find the use of the word "nebari" to be no more presumptuous than the word, "bonsai." I very much enjoyed hearing you use the term so comfortably today.
As a fellow dragon, I've often assumed that I would never live to see another year of the Wood Dragon, yet here I am, and more in love with bonsai than ever. 😊
I wish so badly that I somehow land a job in a bonsai nursery. I was raised as a pretty techy person, but in the past seven years or so (since I was 17), I've been into bonsai and plant life, completely taking over my parents garden. Moving out pretty soon, taking all my trees I've collected with me.
I love this hobby
Take it slowly and you will get there - ask for advice from people who have experience. Working in bonsai is a difficult life - not for the faint hearted.

How to start create nebari on air layering, when it have only thin roots.
What an incredible collection you have! The surface roots elevates the piece so much.

Nebari is extremely easy to say as a speaker of english, so no need to worry.
thanks for making bonsai very accessible, I feel like I can give it a try even with the baby maples I collected from the side of the road! I always assumed bonsai was a hobby for old retired rich people, but you explain principles so anyone can enjoy it and understand.
Great video Peter, I have a maple that has one giant root, now I know how to fix it, I tell my beginner students the Nebari isn't just the surface roots, it's the flair of the trunk, a nice flair with surface roots looks much better than surface roots alone.

Yes. Like when Peter says "field grown" does he mean trees taken from wild untouched trees or planted in the ground of his nursery and attended to there? I have so many questions. And here in Southeast New York we currently in a deep freeze and wondering how to care for my potted juniper, maple, and crab apple.
@@charlesmurray1220his field grown trees are trees planted in the ground at Herons, allowed to grow on for a period of years, then lifted at some point to be refined.

The plants at our place cringe when even hand clippers come near. Learning is a great activity. Thank you. Here, I had to switch plant type to no water & poor soil that drains excessively well. Entering year 2 with ambitious plans.

Some people still confused between nebari and negari roots.
Exposed root style is called 'Neagari' I think
I am a brand new sub to your channel..( and to anything Bonsai ) Im loving it so far. I have a question. Ive notice that you have a LOT of trees you have had for many many years now. Can I ask why you do not sell them? Is it because they are your personal collection or they are very expensive or because you just cannot bear to part with them? I enjoy your content very much and Im learning as I go. :)
I just choose not to sell them as they are long term research projects - besides I dont need the money. There are some things in life that money cant buy. Hope you understand. Welcome to our channel and thank you for your feedback

I'd like to know how you can tell the type of trees when they don't have foliage.

Love you're videos and you're excellent tuition Peter but please can you invest in a better microphone so we can actually hear what you're saying in the wind and with the aircraft noise. Again, love you're work and instruction but often skip through due to background noise.

Power tools are not always the best option Simple Wood chisels work amazing and take off much more material and you have much better control and only cost a few dollars

Do you do anything to treat the carved root, cut paste , lime sulfur...?
No need to- if you let the wood rot - it looks more natural
Does it matter what time of year you should do the carving of the root?
Spring and Summer are good as the healing process is more effective.
Was at a bonsai shop yesterday discussing utube bondai channels and when it got to this one they all laughed and one referred to him as chopper chan had me in hysterics
