You can use those roots as cuttings. Wisteria will branch out from roots and you can have crazy trunk made from roots . I have some and they look good.

It's also good to know that wisteria are nitrogen fixers...They'll add some beauty to my food forest! (Although growing food is beautiful on it's own)🙈

That's a lot of root growth for only a year after being basically a "cutting".
Surely yearly repots are the way to go - at least for the next few years.

this species is excellent for nursery work for novices. rooting stem cuttings in water, root cuttings in soil, tip and bridge grafting, braiding trunks, inverted grafts and cuttings: they are just easy and malleable. i'm working mine as a tanuki using the twisted trunk of an old dead specimen and braiding the stems into the donor wood to achieve a very contorted trunk. in Minnesota, getting them to bloom reliably is the challenge, that and they seem to send off rogue shoots that go skimming across the soil making for the freedom of a nearby structure. they seeeeeem to seeeeee!
I have to repot mine every year. They grow like weeds. I also keep mine in a shallow tray of water over summer. They are very thirsty. Thanks, keep growing

We had a thunderstorm last night and then turned to hail as the temps dropped from 64F/17C to 24F/-4C this morning. Crazy weather.
Severe root pruning on this lovely wisteria. Fingers crossed the plant survives. In that case you have paved the way for a great root system. :)

You need to teach how you care for your trees after you prune the roots
Hi Nigel, as you said roots are wild with wisteria. From my experience it should be repoted every year, I didn't two years ago and the main trunk died back a lot. I switched to a cascade style pot and it makes it easier to manage the roots, basically keep the surface roots and cut the bottom.
Good move up potting it. You’ll be glad you did and just as amazed next year when you repot it. They totally fill up the pot every year. 👍🏻

Hello Nigel great work on this wisteria again. I’ve found that when you trim roots on wisteria all your cuts should be downward or they will just grow up in the angle you cut them. Also with the smaller trees fine roots are everywhere and close to the trunk thick ones have a mind of their own.
I have two and found that a piece of tin shaped like a cone directed the roots downward giving more control to wear they went.
I know you have your method’s and they seem to always work out for you I’m not that lucky ha.

You convinced me to heavily prune the wisteria's I have to dig out of the garden this spring.

Great video with the weather and the Wisteria pruning. Question, after root pruning do you fertilize right after or stay on a fertilizing schedule, and is there a special fertilizer to use for the newly cut roots to help them recover and grow?
I always fertilize very weakly every time I water the trees. This weak solution doesn't hurt the new root tips at all. I generally begin the watering with a small bit of fertilizer right away!
Just a thought. If you were to take that huge root you pruned, and plant it with just the top showing above soil, do you think it would grow?
Have you tried using the bag of soil that Jerome from We are the Bonsai Supply sent you? Asking since you ran out of soil for this tree and I was curious if you had used it or not.
The soil from the bonsai supply is a bit too coarse for these smaller trees, I'll use it on some of the larger ones!!
My favorite substrate folks stopped doing business... I am gonna try to go to my local nursey and see if they still have some left... SuperFly is what I use ...no organics.
My neighbor had a Wisteria growing in his front lawn.. it sent runners out under the ground and got under his house siding...they seem to grow like weeds . Someone told that they'd grow from a root cutting. 🤔🤷♂️

I regularly see you using the scissors for trimming roots and branches... how often do you have to resharpen them??
I sharpen them about once a week, I just take the stone and touch up the edges!
