The Experiment Podcast: How the Cherokee Nation Confronted Its Role in the Slave Trade

  • From girlhood, Marilyn Vann knew she was Black and she was Cherokee. But when she later applied for Cherokee Nation citizenship, she was denied. A journey into Cherokee history revealed that Vann and her family are descended from people who were enslaved by the Cherokee Nation. They were freed after the Civil War, but that wasn’t the end of their struggle. In 1866, the Cherokee Nation made a promise-a promise of citizenship for these “freedmen” and their descendants. But in the years that followed, that promise would be at the center of a battle between civil rights and sovereignty.

I am upset because of the way my tribe has handled things. We did not handle things as inclusively as we historically would have because of influence from white settlers. There’s a point of adaptation for survival that crosses the line (discrimination, lack of inclusivity we historically would have had, enslaving other oppressed peoples).

She must be proud to be descended from the strong African Americans that survived through all that. As impressive as it is to have survived the Trail Of Tears as an indigenous person, those enslaved by indigenous were even more impressive because they went through even more hardship and came out the other side. I feel sad thinking about all that was lost along the way, I.e. life-ways, land, lives.

I understand that my tribe was trying to hold itself together but we are known as The Principle People, why should we behave like the US government has by going back on our words and not honoring our commitments. When I heard about how we treated the freedmen and not granting them their rights we promised them, I cried. I am disappointed and hurt by it, that my nation was so discriminating and behaving like that of white supremacists have towards us and freedmen and enslaved people and anyone else that was different to them.

I don’t see why her being a Freedman descendent should prevent her from membership. That is just dumb. I have a CN ID that shows blood degree but it is only taking into considering my maternal grandmothers side of the family not my maternal or paternal grandfathers side of the family because they are Cherokee as well. I think degree of blood concept makes sense to a point but is dumb. It is our heritage regardless and we have a right to be a part of it.

this is a hatchet job...this plays perfectly to divide and conquer strategy. slavery is bad. im not opposed to freedmen having tribal citezenship. if descendants of freedmen want to wait in line for food commodities with the rest on of tribe, i welcome them. btw you cant collect commodities and food stamps at the same time. there would be more complete historical perspective if miss Tracy mentioned cherokee children being kidnapped and brainwashed at boarding schools as an explanation for lack of knowledge among cherokees, or that there are mass graves of ndn children being found at those sites now. cherokees are survivors, not aggressors. there are less than a million cherokee that have survived to the present, it has been quite difficult to do so.

The 1842 slave revolt in the Cherokee nation? Where black slaves rose up against their Cherokee masters and ran away, the Cherokee Indian slave holder and slave catcher John drew was hired to track down runaway black slaves
