$1 Fried Mozzarella at Sabah's Best Night Market 🇲🇾

  • Back in Malaysia for the first time in a few years, I visited the most popular night market in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, for an evening street food rally.
The Api Api Night Food Market on Gaya Street is open every Friday and Saturday night from 6 p.m. until midnight. After spending a rainy Saturday afternoon in my hotel room, the downpour finished just in time for me to go out and visit the food street at opening time.
The first culinary delight I indulged in was a big mozzarella stick. A huge chunk of mozzarella, covered in dough and breadcrumbs, deep-fried and then covered with mayonnaise, cheese sauce and chili sauce.
It was every bit as delicious as it was messy. About half of the sauce ended up on my leg as I attempted to walk and eat it.
Unfortunately there are no tables and chairs set up at the market so it was going to be difficult for me to eat the food while standing up and holding a camera in one hand.
Since my hotel, the Hilton Kota Kinabalu, was nearby, I had the genius idea to just buy food and take it back to my room to consume it. So that's what I did with the next thing I bought, a plate of black pepper lamb.
I ended up needing a metal knife and fork to eat it properly so I was patting myself on the back for having the idea to enjoy it in my hotel room.
I headed back out to the night market and the first thing that looked appealing to me was Takoyaki. It's a famous Japanese street food from Osaka. The food street seems to be more Asian street food in general rather than specifically Malaysian cuisine.
I enjoyed that tasty Japanese snack, again, back in my hotel room, with one of my favourite drinks. A delicious ice Milo.
On my third trip to the food street I went for something more local, the Char Kuey Teow. There was a massive queue for it so I knew it must be good. According to the guy in front of me in the line, this stall 'Penang Kuew Teow' is famous after going viral on Facebook.
After grabbing a lychee juice, I took Malaysia's famous noodle dish back to my room to much. My thoughts - delicious! I'd definitely eat it again.
After nipping out to the market for the fourth time, I returned with meatball pasta, Tahu Perkedel and an iced green tea. The Tahu Perkedel is fried tofu with minced beef inside. It was decent but a bit on the bland side. Definitely should be consumed with sauce.
And after that I was well and truly stuffed!
I ate a ton of food at the Api Api market but spent very little money. Malaysia seems a bit more expensive than Indonesia but it's still definitely a great budget travel destination.

Hello Dale, here from So Cal. Been watching your video vlogs for years. Your videos are very interesting. You give alot of details. Plus you manage to catch a scammer or two in the process. The guys renting horse rides. Anyway, I watched this Street Market video last night 1/20/23. The foods you ordered and brought back to your Hilton Hotel, literally made me hungry. Video was great. Thank you for all your work and vlogs. Be safe in your travels. I love alot of your videos. My dream place would be Dubai, probably never go though. I loved your vlogs a few years ago of Atlantis and Nobu. Also the one in Nigeria where you walked up to animal on property and he ran towards you. Not that part, but the room you stayed in was so beautiful. I liked one vlog you took at Indian resort at Christmas time, you were in a separate villa. Plus when you went to stay onboard Queen 👑 Mary Ii ship ⚓. There are so many wonderful interesting vlogs. Cannot name them all. I like the beautiful unusual rooms you have stayed in. One in India was a full apartment, beautiful design, upstairs bedroom balcony, Hilary Clinton book you mentioned you did not like her. I don't remember name of vlog, but that Indian apt was gorgeous. Also nice hotel where Luke Damont came to see you. You discovered your previous vlog pics on candies. Thank you for your efforts and making us feel like we are with you on your trips. Blessings 🙏 from So Cal.
