  • "Autism" is an antique word defined by a neurotypical eugenicist. It doesn't reflect our experiences, and it obscures our differences. We should get rid of it.

My name is Christian Swenson. I'm a 29-year old autistic man with interests in philosophy, art history, and all sorts of things. I made this channel to talk about the experience of autism from an autistic perspective. Autistic consciousness isn't normal consciousness. The autistic world isn't the normal world. I want to explore that world with you.

You are the only one I've seen say this, yet I've seen many who decry people who continue to use the term "Asperger's Syndrome" for similar reasons.

I totally agree about the problem of defining us from an external (behavioural) perspective, and that autism is generally poorly defined and conceals differences.
Such a good point about connecting to people along other axes.

    Great Rant.
From my German perspective Bleuler is pronounced as the "combination" of the English words 'bl(ue)' + '(sp)oiler'.

I’m just glad someone is talking about it. In terms we have been diagnosed with, and understand

There is a sense of determinism in new definition of autism as neurological and developmental disorder which makes Bleulers "morbid self-absorption" naive in comparison.

Very good video. I recommended your channel to the trick cyclist that gave me my asperger's/autism & adhd diagnosis.

I personally don't think autism, adhd, neurotypical are a single thing. I've been thinking that neuroduversity itself is more extensive and specific than many think.
Also there's some problems with labels in that people who are oustide of those labels is that they assume everyone under a given label is the same, to combat this labels will have to get more and more specific.
As for label abolishment: They are useful, and until things are more-than-commin knowledge it's the only way that people can communicate their differences, which are important for cohabitation and working and living and being together. If I was either ignorant of or ignored the differences that me and a person in a wheelchair had, I might ask them to race me up the stairs or something. BUT, people need to see eachother as MORE than their differences.
Personally, I think a new system (much like the MBTI system in ways) would be better for classifying and describing disorders- Earlier today, i was talking with a relative. The funny thing is, they think they have ADHD, and either push aside/or are unaware of their autism symptoms. Now, this is the real kicker: They told me about how they think I might have adhd, and listed some traits of mine that I hadn't considered.
Now, if we categorize things as disorders with sets of symptoms, or clusters or spectrums, we get this happening. If it was just a list of traits and experiences, and that was abbreviated somehow and THEN used as a label, it would solve confusions like this.

    Good video
The question is what's the new word?
Since we come in all shades and variances, what is the area of our cohesion? What makes autism (or whatever the new word should be) autism?

I think Marie Kondo should come in and declutter/reorganize our vocabulary, hahaha. A lot of unboxing and reboxing needs to happen.

Maybe it's backwards to single out us as something?
Maybe it's that as a society we just need to stop pressuring people to be tough and entrepreneurial etc, and allow that humans are neurologically diverse, some people are sensitive in various ways, etc.
For me, my diagnosis was about letting go of an expectation to be someone/something I wasn't and getting support to not have to force myself in situations that just don't work for me.
