I hate to break it to Visconti, but I still can’t afford a Visconti. It was nice of them to try though. ❤
Maybe it's the first step in the right direction. I won't pay their current prices either.
Very good point! It’s still a lot of money. They are getting closer! Thanks.
1. Kudos to Visconti for entering the sub $200 market.
2. As a matter of personal taste, for an high-end steel nib pen, I would got for a Franklin-Christoph, which persues a less flamboyant aesthetic. What can I say, I'm from Northern European stock. Even more valuable to me is the fact that Franklin-Christoph individually hand-tunes the nib of every pen that leaves their shop. That makes for a company I love to deal with.
Hand tuning is ideal! Sounds like an excellent choice.
Um, thanks Enabler..😂…now I need to get one too! Love your contents. H.J.
Hahha! Nice. Hilarious. It’s so true though.
You’re right about over the top, but I, too, have the Bronze Age and Mythos (Aphrodite). The Mythos nib performs very well. I like your Apollo. New Visconti models can’t hide the del Vecchio (old) DNA. Btw, your channel is irresistible! I must join from FOMO.
I agree so much about the del Vecchio influence. I’d like to do a video just on that.
As always nicely done, in December I purchased the last 5 pens on my list that I created when I went down the rabbit hole as we all do, including the 149 and 823. One of your recent videos said something that had made me think! You said we don’t always need to purchase more, but enjoy and appreciate what we have. I have around 85 pens 13 gold nib etc. so I am taking a break on buying and going to enjoy and appreciate what I have and slowly think of what would bring me pure joy! I will now concentrate on stationary to make this hobby even more enjoyable!
Thank you, My Friend. That sounds like a wonderful plan!
Another interesting video even though I am not a Visconti fan. It does make us aware of what is out there. What I noticed was when you were video taping the writing sample, I do believe that your penmanship is improving. Thanks for taking the time to share with all of us.
Thanks very much. That is very kind. Especially with your handwriting. Filming and writing is tough for me sometimes. I am not always in the best position or the most stable. Thanks so much!
HJ. I hope that my comments didn't come off as being rude. My intent was to praise. Please forgive me for not expressing myself correctly.
Once again Dr. Jones wonderful, informative video. I always learn so much when watching your videos. Hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend!
Thanks so much Wendell! It’s always a pleasure to hear from you. Thanks for watching and we will speak soon. Enjoy the weekend.
Visconti Mirage is another entry level and is performing very well for me. Picked it up at Atlas on Black Friday for around $90.
Very nice! Good get!
Difficult to place it as 'entry level', even at such a discount!
@@archivist17 I was meaning entry level for Visconti
@@johnnywebster4417 Ah, that makes much more sense. Apologies for my misunderstanding.
@@archivist17 No worries at all..I also could have been more detailed.
Excellent video! Beautiful shots of the pen. I think the brown one looks regal! I can’t wait to receive my pink Visconti!
Thanks so much! I am glad you enjoyed it. Let me know your thoughts when it arrives.
Anotherngreat review, HJ. Thanks.
Thank you, My Friend. I am glad that you enjoyed it.
I actually love my mythos Aphrodite xD but I’m still waiting for the package with my HS 😍
Very Nice!
Great review, Hemingway! And great sweater. Not sure which I prefer - the pen or the knitwear. I think you need to expand the channel to include knitting tips - my wife would appreciate them! Cheers for now. Peter.
Thanks Peter! I am a sweater guy. I can’t resist an interesting design. All the best!
Outstanding, balanced, thorough Review. Thank You!

Very nice pen Goulet pens sold out frank in Oswego I'll next pen esterbrook estie honey comb oversize exfine gold tone from Anderson pen Appleton WI some time this month.

What brand do you have ink in your esterbrook estie honey comb frank in Oswego ill
@@frankmarek9921 Right now it’s J Herbin Eclat de Safir.
@@HemingwayJones thanks
Wonderful review, you are such an honest reviewer that I can trust you completely. Am happy that there is now a decent entry level Visconti available to the market.
Thanks very much! It’s one of the advantages of being unaffiliated with a. pen shop. Thanks so much for being here! I always enjoy your comments.
Really nice review. I ordered one as my introduction to Visconti this past December-January. I’m really liking mine. I got the Zeus which is lovely dark blue with what almost looks like a stormy haze and yellow imbued into the resin I guess to symbolize the the lightning. It’s really a beautiful pen accented with that bronze colored section. I’m not a fan of metal sections since they tend to be to slippery for me but this one was actually really pleasant. I got mine in a nice broad and it combined with Diamine Oxford blue is just a super nice wet and juicy writer. The pen has become my go to writer for writing my novel or notes I take when I have ideas for said novel when I’m out and about. It’s really a pen that when I look at it inspires me to write creatively :)
Wonderful! You chose a very nice pen! Well done. Thanks so much for watching! Stop by again soon.
Would love to see your brown pen collection/recommendations! Thanks for all your videos!
Thank you so much! I may do something on this soon. Thanks!
Interesting, thanks!
Thank you!
Maaaaan. I wasn't interested in this pen until I saw the blue one...gonna try to hold off and snag a used one down the line
That is a good move!
May have to add this Visconti to my wish list. My first over the top purchase was the Visconti Rembrandt. It’s lovely. Then I got a Van Gogh. It’s lovely too!
Hello! A Van Gogh is a lovely pen and an excellent choice!
Wonderful review! I had my eye on the Zeus model but I am yet to make my first purchase of an upper entry level pen. I think I’ll end up with the Pilot E95s, Vanishing Point, or Custom 74 before going with something more extravagant.
Hello Jinntalis, always a pleasure! Hmmm, a tough question for me is to choose between the E95S adn this. I think I may like the Pilot more. They are completely different though. That E95S gold nib is very interesting.
@@HemingwayJones When I’m ready for a Visconti, I will most likely go with a Van Gogh. I started with fountain pens in December and I’ve been trying
a variety of entry level pens (your video on that was most helpful) to get a sense for what I like. Cheers!
@@jinntaliswrites Thanks very much! I am glad you found it useful.
I love Visconti pens. I already own 3 of the original Mirage models. I really like the fluted (?) Body style. But I had to order one of the Mythos as well as the H.S. Lotus Garden and the Goulet exclusive Opera Master Combustion. I almost never post my pens so that's a non-issue for me. Thanks for this sneak peek at my pending purchase.
Well Chosen, Robbin! Wish you all the best with it.
I really like the look of the Poseidon but this one is beautiful too. 😇🩷🙏🙌
I have a Visconti Homo Sapiens Dark Age that Mike Masuyama ground down to a needlepoint. The pen has the palladium nib and it's just bouncy enough to give it some character. Visconti make some great pens. Thanks for sharing this warts and all. Another enjoyable YT video.
Hello Eric, My Friend! That sounds awesome. Although it is probably too fine for me, I respect the artistry. All the best.
Beautiful pen. I have been put off buying a Visconti pen by the negative reviews. Glad you are pleased with yours. Thanks for sharing .
Thank you. I like it, but the posting is terrible.
I love my Visconti pens. I have a Visconti Shadow in front of my keyboard. I have others but thats the one I use but it rarely leaves the house because replacing it.. well... So I see a Mythos in my near future and maybe a Mirage as well. Thank you Mr. Jones for the informative video. I think the cons of the Mythos are almost inconsequential. I don't usually post my pens and as you have said I have several converters.
Wonderful Greg! Let me know your thoughts when it arrives. Thanks!
Very stylish; I like it.
Thank you!
Another awesome video. I have two steel nib visconti's and they are both from the Artist series. I do like them quite a bit, but they moved from my in use pens to my collectior pens (meaning I really like them but use other pens.) Visconti's customer service is very good. I lost a piece of one of my pens and all I had to pay was shipping, and it came 2 days later. The Stary night is a lovely pen, it's got a lot of meaning to me, so that will never leave my collection. The Dali, is one that mom bought for me, it seems like you can't find them any more. I do want a Homo Sapien or the Davina (such a beautiful pen) -- I didn't get the Davina because I was like I am not gonna pay $400 for a pen, now I would pay that in a heart beat. Lamy and Twsbi just had to release colors that I have been waiting for.... I really need to stop this color obsession with Lamy and Twsbi..... Thankfully they are cheap enough (for me).... I just recently picked up the Moonman T500 and I love it, I feel that it is so much better than the Lamy 2000 -- which have some features that drive me crazy.... (I had went to buy it and tested it, and was like this is not for me, but walked out with another pen. Thanks again for sharing this wonderful pen.
Thanks so much, Ceit! Always a pleasure! You are a wealth of information. I am lucky to have you here.
Thanks!
Thank you very much, Terri!!!!! That is extremely kind of you! Wishing you all the best always!
I have the three mythos: Apollo, Zeus and Aphrodite. These nibs are far superior than the ones put on the Van Gogh and Rembrandt models. This is a great pen. However the blue one (Zeus) is not succeeded in the blue color because some lines are too much straight and does not integrate to the rest of the design. This blue is very very nice but not well integrated with the rest of the blue.
Thanks so much for the information and for watching. I really appreciate your knowledge. All the best.
I have this pen in fine and I love it!
Hi Tracie! That is an excellent pen and a great choice. Thanks for watching.
I agree with the [posting issue, but have found that a slight gentle twist takes the magnet out of play and the cap posts securely. I am careful not to force the cap with verity much pressure, but it has solved the posting issue for me. I love this pen and especially the fine nib. It is wet and still fine enough for my smaller handwriting
Hello and thanks for the great comment! I feel like I am jamming it on there when I try to post it without the magnets. I know what you mean about twisting it, but with that cap guard of metal, I worry about scratching. It’s OK though because I mostly don’t post pens. The nib is very very nice. It’s a highlight. I love it regardless.
Whe you said you like brown pens i thought "so does drew!" From goulet. Made me laugh at myself. 🤣
Is that a thing with him? There aren’t too many out there. For me, it’s because they compliment my Tweedy wardrobe. All the best.
Visconti makes lovely pens, this is a beautiful looking fountain pen. Mine is on its way. I am glad you reviewed it.
Thank you! I hope that you enjoy it!
@@HemingwayJones i missed a few of your videos as i was travelling i need to catch up on those too, i like your videos.
@@nitina8564 thank you. That’s very kind of you to say.
I’ve been eyeing this pen for a while. It looks gorgeous, and I am quite fond of European fine nibs. The only thing really keeping me from pulling the trigger is that I have heard over time the magnets in the cap tend to corrode or even come loose and fall out. Granted this is a from a spare few sources.
Interesting. Well, I haven’t had it long enough to know. If it should fall apart you all will be the first to know. Thanks!
Interesting pen! In a color I liked with a wicked sale I could be a Visconti owner. LOL. I like how it wrote but I didn't catch what ink you were using. Thank you for the great review!
Hello Chris! Thanks so much. I am so glad that you enjoyed this. This was fun to make. The only issue with this pen is the posting is terrible. I am trying not to post, so that helps. The ink was Wearingeul’s Faust! It is a fun black with a bit of shimmer. Thanks so much and speak soon.
I have the same pen, same nib. I share totally your opinion. About the resin, maybe is my idea, the resin is very similar with the Visconti Medici Rose gold. Greetings and keep the good work.
Ciao Enzo! I can see that. Thanks so much for watching.
I have to admit it’s a great looking pen. I wonder if the converter is a Schmidt also ? I’ll still have to think about it, but I’m thinking !!
Hi Gino! That is a minor issue. How many converters do we have? It’s branded Visconti though and it’s not that nice, especially for $160. All the best!
No. The converter is not a Schmidt. (Or at least not anything like their normal)
I’ve been anxious for this review. Great job! It’s certainly a beautiful pen. Do you have any insight / comparison to the Visconti Rembrandt S which at a comparable price point? It appears to have a magnetic cap and Schmidt nib, too.
Hello David, Sadly I don’t own a Rembrandt. I came close on several occasions. Thanks so much!
Great review! What would be your recommendation for an upgraded converter?
I have a stash of older glass and metal ones. This is what I prefer.
I sent mine back because of the posting issue. It drove me crazy.
Right!?!? One of the worst posting pens ever.
Hi Hemingway. I think this is an excellent looking pen. I like most elements of the design. The use of a Schmidt nib could be a wise move in view of historic criticism of Visconti's own nibs. This particular nib will probably be a reliable choice. One question: does the magnetic closure cause deposits of ink to build up in the cap over time? Overall a rather lovely pen, especially in that brown colour.
Hello David, My thoughts exactly. Schmidt may be more reliable than Visconti in-house. No buildup so far. I will let you know.
@@jamesaritchie1 It’s the disproportionate reach of some influencers, but I can tell you that some of the vendors I know mention that they check each Visconti because they had their own issues with returns.
Personally, I think that a high percentage of a particular pen type should be usable or that company should get out of the pen business. I run at about a 60% bad Jinhao ratio so far. So I can understand that. You should be able to clean it, fill it, and write with it reliably. Not everyone is a nibsmith. I am not a particularly good one. I don’t want to do it.
There is a lot of confusion with nibs. Who owns who, who makes who, Whether one is made to its own specs. Whether a nib maker makes a nib for a company per a separate spec than for other companies. A certain company’s nib matched with different feeds. I look at the specific iteration and discuss that because it is the one reliable fact.
All the best and thanks for the awesome informative comments as always.
@@jamesaritchie1 Well, yes. Every Visconti I own, have, and have had out of the box, an excellent nib. Gold, Palladium, Steel doesn't matter. They're all good.
But obviously people can have bad luck.
And I think that, regardless of who has designed and specified the nib, regardless of who manufacture them, you have to blame the pen manufacturer, not anyone else. They have to check the components they build their pens from. But I, personally, as I've said, have no cause to blame Visconti for anything. Mine are all fine. Thus I trust the brand.
Regarding the posting issue--cap falls off--it would seem to be a design flaw...? What are your thoughts about asking Visconti if they will address the problem? I sent an email to their posted address and received no reply.
Hello Howard,
I think that it may be a design flaw because it seems like it should post well, but it doesn’t. I don’t really post many pens anymore, so for me, it is a moot point. If you think of it, let me know what they say. Thanks.
I rarely post my pens so I don't care about the lack of posting security. As long as the converter works, I'm satisfied with that aspect. I have long international cartridges that will likely provide a substitute ink supply. It IS a beautiful brown pen; I find the other colors unappealing. Thanks for the review.
Speaking of "over the top"; this Visconti comes nowhere close. If you want "over the top", buy Benu.
I have Benu! They definitely beat Visconti on the madness factor. I do like this pen. It's not perfect, but it has a charm and it feels authentic Visconti. For this price, that is amazing. Thanks so much for watching, Witt. Please stop by again soon.
Hello Roland! I agree completely! That converter is rubbish. They most definitely cut corners there! Thanks so much for watching!
Would you buy the benu talisman or this Mythos pen
I’m more of a Visconti writer. I’d go with that one.
You said the nib is vermeil, but you also said it was steel -- isn't vermeil gold plated silver?
So is the nib steel or silver?
I only know of two pens with a silver nib, so it'd be interesting if Schmidt came out with one.
It is steel, very much so, but the coating is vermeil. This according to Goulet. Yellow gold vermeil finish, which I had to look up the meaning of and shared in case anyone else didn’t know. You’re not wrong, but it’s just the finish. Thanks very much for commenting.
8:58 - what song is this?
"Mirage" by Chris Haugen.
@@HemingwayJones Thank you! I must learn that one on guitar.
Eehh I'm very underwhelmed by this pen to be honest...mybe if it was clear it would look nicer, had a better converter, and snapped close or screwed...but it doesn't look worth it to me.
Clear would be interesting! All the best.
Yeah the potential is there though...and those are just the little things...the big thing that is most important is..how does it feel, write!? As long as it aces those categories..then it is a good pen in general.
@@technoraptor7778 Agree! That is what it all comes down to.
It would never even occur to me to try to post a faceted pen... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I post few pens, but this one is advertised commonly as able to be posted. Thanks for watching.
I'm giving this a pass. I have enough Viscontis and it's not iconic (at least not yet).
(Currently, I'm fighting this disturbing 😓, compulsive notion that a piano black, with gold trim, Pelikan M1000 would somehow make my life better.)
Fight it! A trip would be better! Take a pen you have an enjoy yourself!
@@HemingwayJones Lol, of course.
... 🤬 The M1000 isn't supposed to make my life better by writing with it, - But by me knowing it's lying in my cupboard! -Lol.
Of course these notions must be fought, tooth and nail, like the Johannites defended Malta, (...or Rhodes, ...if defeat is there in the end 🙄).
The trick - I think - is to drag it out for years and years. "Yes, yes, 😑 one day I might. ...one day. ...might."
Don't rush. It's not about the destination. It's about the journey.
@@Vermiliontea I do something like that sometimes; I elevate one thing as that thing I must have and then I don’t get it. I do this so I won’t focus on anything else. It doesn’t always work for me, but it helps!
I don't care for this pen. It's just too fussy. Too much going on. It seems more like jewelry than a writing instrument, as if making a statement about status of the owner by the pen's very existence, rather than representing a quality implement from which to form a piece of art, which ultimately ends up being removed from the physicality of the writing device.
I like pens that can pass for jewelry! You can only have so many staid black pens. There is a wide selection of pens so that all of us can purchase one we enjoy and works well.
"You can only have so many staid black pens." ?
Oh, I don't know about that. I like black pens. I have more than eighty. And I just acquired a Narwhal Original Plus Limited Edition Lovina Black which I immediately filled with black ink, thus the whole pen, clear section included, is now completely black. Looks good with my black Polo shirts and black jeans. (c;
Well I think we complement each other! You buy the black ones and I will buy the colourful ones! It would be nice to see pictures of your collection.
Phil Naunton: I want to apologize for my comment about “staid black pens” . It was rude. Your choice of pens is as valid as anyone else’s. Please forgive me. (Judy Anderson)
No worries. Spirited comments are just fine in my opinion. I actually didn't consider your comment out of line, merely part of the banter. Keep up the good work.
