    Hey friend. Check out the Z3 lighted shifter DIY on bimmerforums. The add a manual shifter from a Z3 with the lighted icons to show the gear that are on the shifter as you shift it. It may also be called the LED shifter or lighted indicator shifter for manual e46 cars. Easy to install and wire.

    The older E36 and I believe all OBD1 BMWs had a similar test where you could use the odometer cluster to pull fault codes from the car. Here you can only pull basic 'current' info and not fault codes.
    Mainly this test is used to check engine temp and voltage.

    If the battery shows 14 volts dc its ok. The best way to really check the voltages is by using a digiatal volt meter and probe to + and - and whilst on or off and that will give you a better idea of the voltages of the battery. If the battery is new, get one according to specs of your car or higher.

    What it means is that your alternator is charging the battery when the voltage goes up. It does not show whether your battery is bad. If you run your car at night with full lights on , aircon and radio and in the morning it won't crank or has a hard time trying to crank, have your battery replaced.

    Hey Ana,
    Yes you can. Either the Service Engine Soon light turns off on it's own after you drive the car for a bit or you can get a PA Soft BMW Scanner (about $30 - $50) to reset it yourself. I will actually make a video this week on how to reset the lamp with the PA Soft Scanner.

    @63B1stmaint if your immobiliser is not allowing car to start it's either your key's transponder (little chip inside of the key) or your car's ecu (Engine control unit) what basically is a main car's computer. You should plug in your car to diagnostic tools via obd2 and do the readings. Your key's transponder need programming or ecu has to be reset or if worse comes to worst you will need new ecu. When you buy ecu like second hand one you have to buy it with car keys as it's matched with ecu

    Good vid but. If you have koeo the voltage reading is the state of charge.
    If you have koer then the reading is the state of the charging system. The voltage regulator decides the amount of charge vs. The demands for power. A 12v battery fully charged is 12.6 volts. 2.1 volts dc per cell. Charging systems run from 13.5 to 14.5 vdc.

    @bmw4ever55 That is the OBDII connector that you would get to code the cabrio to do that. It is under the convenience features. See my other video showing the convenience coding I did in my car. The device you need to buy is the BMW Scanner PA Soft 1.4 ($40 and up on eBay) which comes with software and the cable to connect your laptop to the car. Takes a minute to do.

    @TheSushfiend - The point of this video is 'how' to access the hidden functions! Hence the title 'unlock and test'! Once you access your data the interpretations are entirely up to you! I'm not running a BMW School over at my house and could not possible care anymore beyond what I'm presenting in my video here. Sorry to disappoint but it is what it is! Smart people tend to come here use my video to learn how to access the functions and then use GOOGLE SEARCH to sort the rest out themselves!

    If you're above 12.0 volts, you're charging the battery. If you are reading 13 to 14.6 you're healthy and you won't see it at over 14 unless you have taken a toll on your battery. You're fine, and better off being concerned about something that really matters like learning ohm's law.

    that is what the alternator is giving out. a little low. when you turn the engine off thats what charge the battery is holding, again alittle low and will only let you down when the winter comes and it freezes

    14.5 is normal at 2000rpm. That's the voltage coming off the alternator, so lower rpm =lower output voltage.

    @dondipa nope. I bought it from the original owner in 2008 (a 70 year old retired surgeon) out in Long Island. He did nothing to the car other than basic maintanence. The thing was brand spanking new when I got. In the 2-3 years of me owning the car I put more miles and dents on it than the 6-7 years the first owner had it. sad but true. But the car has gotten some nice OEM upgrades under my care.

    i got a question bro... do you know where is the alternator wire in bmw 320d 3 series? that is coming to battery? is it also passing through trunk by any chance?
    actually i am installing secondry battery and a split charging replay switch. i am looking for a 12v ignition wire. which only powers when we twist/cycle the key twice. not once.
    by any chance is that wire somewhere in trunk too?
    please help.

    @goldBCFC Not sure ifyou are referring to me but I'm not Asian or East Indian. Also there is nothing wrong with my odometer or mileage. My car had geniunely low mileage when I bought it. BMW's have the tamper dot that only the dealership (or someone with BMW software and hardware) can remove if the odometer has been tampered with.
    Also I never claim in any of my videos to be a mechanic or car expert. Other than this BMW and the 2010 C300 my girlfriend has I claim no knowledge of other cars.

    @olaf2046  Před 13 lety

    @63B1stmaint you can't! As long as you have a key and it is your car then your BMW E46 should not have any immobilizer to stop you from starting your car at anytime. So unless you broke the window and are trying to start the car with a coat hanger you should not have to worry about any immobilizer. If your car isn't starting with the key chances are it is some other issue and not the original factory BMW Alarm.

    @olaf2046 hey, its all good. no harm no foul. the water pump in my mustang was pretty quick and easy if you do it right the first time. looking at the E46 i drive as well, that might be a little bit more labour intensive considering all the stuff you have to take off. and yeah, E90's are notorious for maintenance user unfriendliness, which is why an E46 would be the newest 3 series i'd buy. but im a sucker for E39 M3's

  • @olaf2046

    sounds like battery. what happens is the alarm either drains the battery or the oem alarm acts up as a way of letting you know when the car is off the battery is not sufficient on its own to power the alarm.

  • @olaf2046
    @olaf2046  Před 11 lety

    I don't think a second battery would work on the E46. Because the car uses a Bus system that is 'pre-adjusted' to be used off one battery. If anything they only place to put in a second battery would be in the hood area in the cavity behind the positive terminal. Most secondary battery installations are usually INDEPENDENT of the original battery and are used to power stereo or accessory equipment. But I have never heard of one working on a BMW newer than 1999.

    @olaf2046 I've read that the tamper dot indicates that the mileage I can read is different to the real mileage. Is there any way to read that REAL mileage that is supposed to be recorded in the ECU?

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  Před 5 lety

      Those are black places to let you know the number can have at max 4 digits. so when you see "...9" that means you can also have "9999"

      @olaf2046  Před 5 lety

      On this car if I recall correctly my Alternator was also on its way out. I also had some tech retrofit mods on this car for the SiriusXM adapter and iPod Intravee Set Up that would have been have drawing power on the down low.

    • @olaf2046
      @olaf2046  Před 8 lety +1

      On the 2006 to 2011 years 3 series E90 you can modify the daytime lamps setting thru the BC stalk or iDrive. The 1998 to 2006 E46 3 series needs a scanner that can code like a PA Soft scanner and your basic Windows PC laptop. Scanners are sold online from $15 up. Dealership charges $80 to turn on or off daytime lamps.

    Uhm...the point of this is that unlocking the car computer gives you lots of diagnosis and real time information about the car so you don't have to go to the BMW Dealership and pay them $125 an hour to tell you that you need a new battery. Unlocking also gives you other IMPORTANT information like coolant temperature, engine and oil temperature, voltage values at different points of the car, exact numerical values for fluid levels...

I got you this far but if you want to find specific answers GOOGLE is your friend. I'm not going to hold your hand every step of the way. Learn to GOOGLE my friend and ye shall be sure.

    if your knowledge of cars is this weak, you shouldn't be messing with technical functions. it's like handing a monkey a computer watching you with mess with this bmw. not trying to be mean, but honestly you need to leave things alone if your knowledge is as weak as I can see.
